With so many of the population vaccinated what do you think a third wave means? Will we need another lockdown? 😩

@thecatsatonthewall

Approx 21,000 new cases each week now.

Thats mental, most are the indian variant, more transmissible, more deadly

I have a sinking feeling we will be in some sort of restriction for years as new variants come along.

There's no proof that it's more deadly.
colouringcrayons · 01/06/2021 20:21

This is why there is concern about big indoor venues - we currently have very low risk of superspreader events

www.theguardian.com/world/2021/jun/01/autumn-covid-cases-cambridge-university-nightclub

Obviously this was WITH distancing and you'd expect a high-ish amount of mixing after the event too but the case rate will surely just go up rapidly if there are lots of normal nightclub-type interactions?

PrincessNutNuts · 01/06/2021 20:30

But the “experts” aren’t remotely unanimous

They are it you've stopped listening to the ones who have been wrong a lot.

Some may be more upfront and straightforward about what they think.

Some prevaricate, use softer language couch it in more caveats so as not to frighten the horses.

But any "expert" saying we're not in the third wave right now, the Delta variant hasn't worsened our position, May 17th hasn't worsened our position, or that opening up on June 21st won't worsen our position is either a fool or being extremely disingenuous.

PrincessNutNuts · 01/06/2021 20:33

There's no proof that it's more deadly

It doesn't need to be.

Alpha (the Kent variant) wasn't, but it still killed 80,000 British people and has kept us in restrictions from October to May.

It just needs to be more transmissible.

Like Alpha was.

And it is.

thecatsatonthewall · 01/06/2021 20:43

There's no proof that it's more deadly

Its certainly more transmissible, which as Princess says is all you need.

But your post is why we are in this mess, we wait until we have the irrefutable data/proof but by then its all too late.

We need foresight.

Againstmachine · 01/06/2021 20:52

Who do you think they work for?

Many corporations/governments fund research of scientists, if you think scientists aren't biased and incorruptible I beg to differ.

Againstmachine · 01/06/2021 20:53

If you keep on on what our resident scaremonger tells you.

And when the Kent variant hit, hardly anyone had been vaccinated. Which will make a big difference.

We were always going to see a rise in cases when restrictions ended. I highly doubt we will see deaths on the same level as January.

RedcurrantPuff · 01/06/2021 20:58

Vietnam Variant!
15000 a day in hospital!
MORE transmissible!!

This thread is hilarious.

I know who funds science and how research etc is funded, but you have no evidence that 'corporations/governments' would want covid restrictions to continue.

I guess what I am saying is this is just common or garden conspiracy nonsense.

Its basic maths, nothing to do with any poster.
Againstmachine · 01/06/2021 21:07

Unless hospitalisations go up, and deaths go up it's irrelevant cases are expected to rise.

Againstmachine · 01/06/2021 21:08

They all have own agendas what ever that maybe.

Agree but we we don't yet know that, so why rush ahead?

In a few days we will, so lets hope the easing in June goes ahead, i just think we should proceed with caution.

MarshaBradyo · 01/06/2021 21:11

We’re not rushing ahead. This te opening has been cautious.

The data from the me to two weeks on hospitalisations is what will determine next stage.

MarshaBradyo · 01/06/2021 21:11

From the next two weeks..

I think if you can't explain what you think the agendas are, you are just making this up.

Academic scientists are funded by corporate interests sometimes, where their interests and expertise are useful. But many research things that have no commercial value at all, and many research things that actively challenge the status quo and powerful interests.

Againstmachine · 01/06/2021 21:12

Agree but we we don't yet know that, so why rush ahead?

There is five weeks between each easing noone is easing ahead.

Againstmachine · 01/06/2021 21:15

There are plenty of agendas due to funding, even government scientists aren't independent they work for the government.

Scientists work to Thier paymasters, it pissed me off when people think they are impartial.

New vaccine action resistant variants, autumn lockdown

Thought the decision is being made in the next few days?

You can't just tell businesses that the restrictions will stay on the 19th June.

New vaccine action resistant variants, autumn lockdown
the scary version.
MarshaBradyo · 01/06/2021 21:28

If you google you’ll see papers all saying same

‘An announcement about the 21 June reopening will be made on 14 June’

The Guardian, also Telegraph and Reuters plus whenever else

PrincessNutNuts · 01/06/2021 21:29

The roadmap was based on Alpha, the Kent variant.

After 9 months we understand it pretty well.

Delta (the Indian variant) is different, and we don't understand it at all.

Ploughing ahead with the same roadmap but a different variant that has been able to seed itself all over the country during lockdown restrictions is foolhardy.

There's nothing cautious about that.

We are really through the looking glass now, as the SAGE scientists who work for the government just released a report warning of a possible major wave the government would really rather they didn't mention...

I am sorry, but this is pure conspiracy nonsense.
