All the LFT ones given out by councils and schools in my area are Xiamen Biotechnology company

Different areas may have different ones🤷‍♀️

Just found this:

Innova Medical Group is now believed to be the largest single recipient of payments from UK government contracts during the pandemic. More than 380m Innova tests have been bought so far by the UK government, but now a fierce debate is raging among scientists about how they should be used.

www.theguardian.com/world/2021/jan/28/how-uk-spent-800m-on-controversial-covid-tests-for-dominic-cummings-scheme

So yes apparently

sirfredfredgeorge · 10/06/2021 22:48

Does the uk have from this company.

Yes, loads of innova tests. This recall was for 77,000 tests, of the millions being done all over the world, they've made well over a billion tests.

Piggywaspushed · 10/06/2021 22:52

My school uses Innova. Apparently due to change though to nose only ones, although hasn't happened yet.

JanFebAnyMonth · 10/06/2021 22:56

The ones described in the Recall notice are nasal only, piggy.

Um this is quite big news - isn’t it?

JanFebAnyMonth · 10/06/2021 22:59

@sirfredfredgeorge so do they mean that certain batches of the tests had wrongly worded instructions, but the tests themselves are OK?
Is there no way incorrect instructions can be corrected without recalling the whole product?
Stupid question I guess, when it comes to medical products.

PatriciaHolm · 10/06/2021 23:19

Hmmm - the FDA have issued a warning today to stop using "the Innova SARS-CoV-2 Antigen Rapid Qualitative Test" because it's not regulated for use in the US, and they have concerns that "performance of the test has not been adequately established, presenting a risk to health."

https://www.fda.gov/medical-devices/safety-communications/stop-using-innova-sars-cov-2-antigen-rapid-qualitative-test-fda-safety-communication

They mention "labeling distributed with certain configurations of the test includes performance claims that did not accurately reflect the performance estimates observed during the clinical studies of the tests. ". But thejr warning seems to apply to all tests, not just these batches, because the test is not approved full stop, not just because some batches had misleading information leaflets.

So it's not entirely clear, but the FDA release appears to concern all Innova SARS-CoV-2 Antigen Rapid Qualitative Tests, not just the previously recalled batches?

JanFebAnyMonth · 10/06/2021 23:36

Wait and see, I guess?

Piggywaspushed · 11/06/2021 06:46

I think this is why the MHRA were at first reluctant to allow the LFTs for mass asymptomatic testing in schools back in January, isn't it?

TheSunIsStillShining · 11/06/2021 07:36

Innova tests have not been approved in the EU either.
And if you are traveling back to the UK an Innova test would not suffice.
double standards much?

MargaretThursday · 11/06/2021 07:46

Not really data, but I know a couple of people who are working at vaccination centres (different ones) and they've both told me that the fate of faintings after vaccination has gone up massively now they're into the 20s age category. One was saying that it had gone up 6 fold, the other said they used to get 1-2 a day, and then yesterday, as an example, they had 15 just in the 2 hours she was there!
The thought is they seem to be more likely to have rushed there, often without having eaten much.

Firefliess · 11/06/2021 08:18

Could the hot weather be playing a part in people fainting?

Applesandpears23 · 11/06/2021 08:46

The weather is also warmer.

Bordois · 11/06/2021 09:09

Third hand anecdata, but a friend of mine has felt ill for the last week or so. They had their vaccine a couple of weeks back so they were sent for a blood test as a precaution. They said they were told by the phlebotomist that they are now seeing lots of people coming through for the same reason and the GPs/111 are erring on the side of caution when it comes to sending people to hospital for anything that could be covid or vaccine related.

Bordois · 11/06/2021 09:12

@Firefliess

Could the hot weather be playing a part in people fainting?
Would the heat/pollen/pollution levels also exacerbate any lung/breathing issues in people with covid?

I know I sometimes find it hard going when my hayfever flares up up.

JanFebAnyMonth · 11/06/2021 09:46

Don’t know if this helps on the Innova tests - lists all 265 (!) companies that manufacture the tests, including one that sounds like (not exact title) the one printed on the back of the instruction leaflet for our school tests (which are not nasal swab only so 🤷🏻‍♀️):
www.fda.gov/medical-devices/coronavirus-covid-19-and-medical-devices/removal-lists-tests-should-no-longer-be-used-andor-distributed-covid-19-faqs-testing-sars-cov-2

(Also my googling revealed that Innova has recently purchased a large Californian PPE manufacturer)

The new PHE technical briefing on variants of concern is out:

assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/992989/AB1_Variants_of_Concern_VOC_Technical_Briefing.pdf

The secondary attack rate for Delta (B.167.2) is now estimated at 11.3% (down from 13.5% as of May 4 and 12.4% as of May 11). The estimate for Alpha (B.117) remains at 8%. A very crude calculation gives the estimated transmission advantage of around 40%. It is not great but it is much, much better than 60%.

sky is reporting 60% news.sky.com/story/covid-19-delta-variant-60-more-transmissible-than-alpha-and-more-resistant-to-vaccines-phe-reports-12330068
wintertravel1980 · 11/06/2021 10:27

Sky headline (60% increase) applies to household transmissions (page 49 of the report) where PHE did further analysis.

My 40% back of the envelope calculation is based on the generic secondary attack rates (page 28 of the report).

It appears that Delta might be more transmissible within households.

wintertravel1980 · 11/06/2021 10:35

Or the household transmission advantage might be explained by environmental factors (level of income, etc).

PHE tries to normalise for that but such analysis is never perfect. We probably need more time and more data. The SAR trend (the drop from 13.5 to 11.3%) shows that numbers can change significantly over time.

sirfredfredgeorge · 11/06/2021 10:37

Or the completely different size of households are that contain under 25's vs those which do not.

MRex · 11/06/2021 10:43

There is increased testing now; full household get tested for any positive case, lots of kids being tested for one case in class instead of just isolating. So I don't think the secondary attack rate is as much higher as it's being billed.

EasterIssland · 11/06/2021 10:43

thanks @wintertravel1980 for the explanation

Piggywaspushed · 11/06/2021 10:47

It appears that Delta might be more transmissible within households.

We have several sets of siblings out at the mo and two sets of twins, and they are cases unlike previously when it was often people isolating because of one person in a household.

That said, I don't think people isolate when ill in the same kind of stringent way they did way back at the outset when people sealed themselves up in their rooms and wiped everything down, and had meals left outside doors. Especially not where children are involved. The more crowded the house and the more occupied , the less likely this is to happen and student houses never seem to do this.

Piggywaspushed · 11/06/2021 10:49

lots of kids being tested for one case in class instead of just isolating
That is only happening in a few schools as a trial.

The testing of all contacts and all pupils in a school seems to have been focused on a few schools in hotspots.
