@MRex

By the way, tying the 5,700 admitted for insect stings and bites back into covid territory... Any ideas why "arthropod sting" and other such unlikely items are included in the MHRA yellow card reports?
I think it's because of the way yellow card reports are collected - members of the public can submit reports, so it could be anything, and I would imagine any redaction would result in screams of "cover up!" so they get published.

In a similar vein, the US equivalent (VAERS) offers side affects including crying, inability to crawl, indifference and "injury associated with device"....

Piggywaspushed · 06/06/2021 20:47

Yeah, there's stuff on there like congenital birth defects : I haven't heard of anyone attributing having an extra finger to the AZ vaccine yet but there's always time...

PatriciaHolm · 06/06/2021 20:51

I uncharitably assumed that "injury associated with device" probably meant "being brained by partner with a shoe due to endless wittering about vaccine side effects"....

As I say, uncharitable of me....

TruelyStruttingHotpants · 06/06/2021 20:51

The regulators say AZ has a lot of very enthusiastic reporting 😂 So I would say they are expecting that at some point piggy

The German officials have been less diplomatic when they discuss the AZ reporting claims Grin

My dd was born without an arm, and one of the first things I asked was it something I'd eaten/done. I was told that when you get limb defects due to medication then it effects both sides in some ways*-not always the same amount, but it would be almost unheard of for it to cause a missing arm on one side, and no limb difference on the other.

Didn't stop a lady chasing me through Guildford once lecturing me of the dangers of thalidomide. Hmm

*Just to note there are other reasons why a child might be born missing more than one limb, genetic being one.
But a single limb deficiency, with no other issues, which is 99% of cases in congenital cases, they don't really know why it happens, but they are certain it isn't anything you've done/taken.

NotN0wBernard · 06/06/2021 21:01

Delurking to ask you learned posters about the trade off between time since first vaccination and effectiveness of being double-dosed. I've seen it discussed before but didn't take much notice as it was hypothetical for me, until an hour ago.

For context I am in one of the areas that is rapidly increasing in the delta variant (originally Id in India). I'm 5 weeks post first vaccination. I've booked the appointment as I'm keen to have whatever antibodies I can get at this point, and am due to emigrate in the coming months (postponed a year so far!).

What peer reviewed journal papers have examined this for AZ?

HSHorror · 06/06/2021 21:06

I can see the cover-up cries, yes. If it were me though I'd want 5 sections; definitely vaccine, probably vaccine, maybe vaccine, probably not vaccine and junk.

Lyme is definitely one for the junk section. I guess that's one of the arthropod crew (ticks are arthropods, right?).

Anne Boleyn had an extra finger, perhaps you're related! I checked and that would mean you're related to Churchill, the Queen and Princess Diana: www.theanneboleynfiles.com/resources/q-a/are-there-any-surviving-relatives-of-anne-boleyn-today-or-has-her-bloodline-ended-rich-jones/.

I personally would not reduce the interval to under 8 weeks but it does depend on everyone's individual circumstances and is a risk based decision.

Thanks for that @winter. I've cancelled my appt and hope to rebook at the 8 weeks mark.
Piggywaspushed · 06/06/2021 22:27

LOL mrex, esteemed company! I did know about Anne Boleyn although I read recently that this is vvvvv unlikely to be true, annoyingly.

ICanSmellSummerComing · 06/06/2021 22:49
  • set up wards with strict control methods.

We seem to fail utterly miserably on controlling infection, so many people caught covid once in hospital.
So many areas are weak including leaving washing uniform to staff.

EducatingArti · 07/06/2021 10:06

Can I ask you people for your hive mind thoughts? I think this thread is better informed and has more nuanced discussion than anywhere else I know.
Which do you think is more likely:
That we are at the start of a significant new wave of infection that is going to grow for a good while yet or that whilst there has been some growth it is more likely that we will keep a lid on it and avoid another significant wave.
I have complicated reasons for asking.
I work as a tutor and since the first lockdown I have only been tutoring students online.
This means that I had to stop working with a couple of students who could not manage that format.
I have now finished working with current year 11s and need to start with some more students which could include ones I can only work with face to face.
I have had both doses of vaccine, second three weeks ago.
I have a couple of very significant people in my life that I really need to keep on seeing however for a health reason they are being very cautious about who they see.
I could not bear it if I don't get to see them again because teaching face to face becomes too risky ( for them). Some of this is about their perception of risk which is also quite hard for me to gauge.
I need to start working with new students pretty soon for financial reasons. I need to work out :
Do I start doing some face to face work straight away?
Do I only do more online work ( but I feel I have some obligation to my previous students at least that can only do face to face. If I take on new students it is usually for at least an academic year)?
Do I live off my savings for a couple of weeks in the hope that things are clearer by then?
I know there are too many unknowns in this scenario but I would be sooooo grateful for your thoughts.
Oh and I'm living and working in Greater Manchester which is not doing so well with Covid right now.

MRex · 07/06/2021 10:10

@EducatingArti - you can't control the perception of others and there will be more outbreaks to come once this one is under control (which I believe it will be soon). Can you meet your students outside, say on a patio with a bit sunshade? It could be worth investing to set up a garden if you have one, so that you can get the income while being able to reassure nervous relatives that you are students outside. Sorry if this is impossible based on your home or work, I don't know enough about either so just putting a suggestion out.

EducatingArti · 07/06/2021 10:19

Thank you. That is a really helpful suggestion.

colouringcrayons · 07/06/2021 10:31

I think this outbreak will grow, things are expected to be worse not better by end of term. So I would do what f2f you can but on current guidelines not assuming 21st removal of distancing (would no distancing be popular amongst customers anyway?)

Agree outside or well ventilated would be good as you can continue.

Who knows what autumn brings. University sector already concerned.

MRex · 07/06/2021 10:47

@EducatingArti

Thank you. That is a really helpful suggestion.
Excellent! By the way, if larger sunshades are ludicrously expensive near you (because they are here due to restaurants buying all the supply), cheaper options to consider are a "sun shade sail" that you attach to the house and the fence, or a gazebo that allows you to put the sides up for ventilation.
EducatingArti · 07/06/2021 10:48

I can manage 1m plus distancing I think (hope) but not 2m. The f2f children I work with can be young ( primary age) and have additional needs like ADHD and can be practically sitting under a table snapping pencils when I am sitting right next to them!
The garden/ ventilation idea is a good one but I couldn't do it at home as I am in a flat with a communal garden. Some families might be able to manage this though at their homes.
There are weird added issues. I need to be able to see what they are writing and that is hard at a distance, particularly as I need to look at text fairly straight on or my varifocals distort things. It also limits the distance I can be sitting away from them! I also use my laptop for learning games and also physical games with phonics cards etc, all of which will need to be cleaned or quarantined between students!
Lots of things to think about.

MRex · 07/06/2021 10:55

@EducatingArti - Getting families to arrange it would be good, the kids might like being in their own space too. For those who can't could you search "rent outdoor space" / "rent a garden" near you? There is at least one option near me that's small but £20/day. Cleaning is easy with spray / wipes, though it may limit which items you use, or photocopy anything paper and recycle after use. I think once you're outside there isn't much you can do about needing to get close to see writing etc except popping a mask on.

Quartz2208 · 07/06/2021 10:57

DD flute and singing teachers have both purchased a plastic screen which goes between the two of them to help with that issue. Maybe have it between desks so you can see but there is a guard

Shunted it up from 12 weeks to 10. I’m in my 40s.
