People with respiratory conditions can also struggle more in the heat, dehydration can exacerbate kidney conditions, heat affects pollution that affects asthma sufferers etc. But as you said it isn't quite hot enough for all that, so it'll be mostly A&E injuries.

Bordois · 06/06/2021 14:39

Yeah, people drinking outside in the sun and getting ill/burnt and/or doing stupid things and injuring themselves.

astonafar · 06/06/2021 14:40

I was out in the town last night. The pubs were full. So lots of alcohol-fuelled stuff.

HeddaGarbled · 06/06/2021 15:58

Sunburn, barbecues & trampolines, according to the Times.

I still find it hilarious that anyone can get a sunburn here and that there is talk of heatwaves when temps rise to 28 degrees :).

jupitermars1345 · 06/06/2021 16:47

Sunburn isn't to do with air temperature
I burnt last week in 18c weather with clouds. I wasn't in direct sun. Medium UV rating but I was out in it from 12-4pm. I didn't think I'd burn either but it doesn't need to be hot to burn. I was actually cold at times

Needanewhat · 06/06/2021 17:20

You can get sunburnt any time between April and October, it's nothing to do with how hot it is.

I don't like hot weather. I'm uncomfortable in anything over about 21.

Cold weather I love. 3 degrees or less preferably.

Needanewhat · 06/06/2021 17:22

Can I ask (not provocatively) if individuals were more self-restricting, wouldn't we get in a better place sooner where more things can be done safely?

I daresay, but honestly - my son is home educated. While millions of unvaccinated children are at schools crammed together with no SD, I don't think I'll be denying him a trip to the museum or a cafe lunch.

NotBot · 06/06/2021 17:46

I’m of the opinion my children have missed out on a lot to protect adults. All they’ve been able to do is go for a walk or the park since January. So we are out enjoying a reasonably normal childhood again. Both DD’s are in nursery 3x a week with 20-30 children (in reality mixing with more like 40-50 as different kids attend on different days). Us going to indoor kids stuff is no more a risk!

Firefliess · 06/06/2021 18:14

I think lockdown has been challenging enough already without passing any judgement on people who want to make the most of social opportunities within what's currently allowed. If people want to be cautious to mitigate their own risks that's fine, but expecting everyone else to restrain themselves for some possible collective benefit isn't helpful.

TheSunIsStillShining · 06/06/2021 18:55

I'm sorry if it came through as judgement, it wasn't meant to.

In general though the problem with your stance -on a theoretical level- @Firefliess is that individuals who want to be lax potentially endanger others. It is a fine line of being just lax enough, being responsible and being a dick. And after a year and a half of seeing how humanity -en masse- behaved I don't think I trust them to not be the last of the options.
I truly believe that if we had proper, meaningful and honest messaging and proper rules from those who are responsible for setting the tone we would have been in a far better position. So I can't entirely fault any one individual, it's just an unfortunate turn of events that we happened to have the worst possible gov in place when we would have needed rational and good leadership.

Piggywaspushed · 06/06/2021 18:59

More stabbings in the summer too, she mutters darkly...

I got sunburnt in February a couple of years ago. Was doing a 4hr run, and it was very unseasonably warm so ended up in just crop top and shorts. Normally I've already started to build up a tan before I get to the crop top stage in april/may but obviously hadn't had chance that year
MRex · 06/06/2021 19:22

It depends a lot on skin type. Pale skin with blue or.green eyes are much more likely to burn

MargaretThursday · 06/06/2021 20:14

I've found wind burn can be more painful than sun burn, and that can happen any time of year!

sirfredfredgeorge · 06/06/2021 20:15

www.dailystar.co.uk/news/latest-news/more-100-under-1s-taken-24212762

"In the last five years there were 1,041 cases where people went to hospital after being out in the sun too long, 924 of which were emergencies."

So 200 a year, and that includes sunbeds, I don't think sunburn is a significant driver of the hospital load of what half a million a month?

MRex · 06/06/2021 20:19

Heatstroke is listed separately. Here are some NHS stats for heatwave to put us all to rights: www.england.nhs.uk/2019/06/nhs-top-nurse-urges-public-to-enjoy-sun-safely-this-weekend/.

MRex · 06/06/2021 20:22

By the way, tying the 5,700 admitted for insect stings and bites back into covid territory... Any ideas why "arthropod sting" and other such unlikely items are included in the MHRA yellow card reports?

Piggywaspushed · 06/06/2021 20:25

I don't get the report... is it showing what condition the people who filled in the yellow card already had??

MargaretThursday · 06/06/2021 20:28

Not admitted to hospital, but the only time I've been to the GP in the last 5 years has been for a bite. My foot swelled up to twice the size from, as far as I know, a normal insect bite.
Bordois · 06/06/2021 20:32

I burn easily and so have the joy of PMLE too.

TruelyStruttingHotpants · 06/06/2021 20:39

I can burn at anything over 24 degrees

You can burn easily whilst skiing on a freezing cold mountain. Which is why skiers all wear sunblock.

TruelyStruttingHotpants · 06/06/2021 20:40

Thought this was the data thread 🤣

MRex · 06/06/2021 20:44

@Piggywaspushed

No idea. There's a long list that makes up the hundreds of thousands of reports, but they seem to include a load of random shit like what the person was tested for, arthropod bite etc, I suppose I expected someone to clear out the totally irrelevant stuff but seems they do not.
