AZ - second dose clots, figures have almost doubled. I don’t want my second dose.

I had my first dose of AZ without any hesitation.

Due my second one next Friday and I honestly don’t know what to do.

32 but high BMI so was offered the vaccine earlier than my age group.

I understand the risk is small, but I just don’t think I can mentally cope with the anxiety and I feel like the four weeks after the vaccine are going to be unbearable anxiety.

France are now offering an alternate second dose if your first dose was AZ.
How likely are UK to do this?

go on odds.. you're more likely to get clots from catching covid from not being fully vaccinated.
and mixing vaccines has no real safety known yet -so safest option is to get your second AZ.

Twizbe · 20/05/2021 16:54

From what I've seen, if you were going to have a blood clot, it would happen after the first dose. If no bad reactions then, you'll be fine now

@Twizbe

But that’s not true, is it.

Data today states there have now been 15 reported cases of clots after the second dose.

Can you link to the data please Dishmatic

If you don't want the second dose don't have it, but please don't expect people to say you're being super sensible and justified.
You're more likely to get a clot being on the pill or from catching Covid - so it's a no brainier really.

I’m not on the pill.

I second this. Mid 30's and had my second dose without giving it a thought, very happy to be fully vaccinated
WheresMyAlex · 20/05/2021 17:08

I’m 30 and had my second AZ dose yesterday. Grateful to be fully vaccinated and the stats from risk of clots are so low that I’m simply not giving it any headspace.

frozendaisy · 20/05/2021 17:09

If you don't want your second dose don't have it and make an appointment to talk to your GP about how long it would take for you to either have a second alternative dose or begin your vaccination programme from scratch.

Or gave your second dose.

Not sure what other options there are really.

AudHvamm · 20/05/2021 17:20

I had my second dose yesterday. (Am 36 no underlying conditions and had it early due to my job). Was given a leaflet on symptoms of blood clots and told they are all very treatable if reported when they are happening. The HCP administering the vaccine really stressed this. They also all seemed willing & happy to discuss options with people - ie process & risks/benefits for getting Pfizer instead.

murbblurb · 20/05/2021 17:23

Your choice, as it should be.

Apparently two doses of astra zeneca gives 90% protection from covid. Which has a much higher risk of causing bloodclots, and is riskier for the overweight. And spreads like wildfire.

Make your own risk assessment.

CeibaTree · 20/05/2021 17:29

If you don't want it don't have it - just be prepared to be knocked for six if you do get covid/long covid and don't complain to anyone if that happens!

roguetomato · 20/05/2021 17:32

If the figures have doubled, isn't it because more people got second shot? Isn't that inevitable? Did the odds increased massively? I don't assume so, tbh.
Chance of getting clot from vaccine is way low compared to getting a clot from catching covid.
If you were offered the vaccine early because of your medical condition, there maybe more chance of you getting ill from covid too.

@CeibaTree

So the first dose counts for nothing?

OP posts:
IndigoC · 20/05/2021 17:36

There have been 15 cases in 9 million second doses.

Compare that with 294 cases out of 24 million first doses.

The second dose is much, much safer.

Last week it was 8 cases out of 7.5million

This week it’s 15 out 9million

Its not up to anyone on here to persuade you to have it. People have given you facts but you have a negative response prepared so theres nothing more anyone can say really.

If you don't want it there's plenty of others who will have it instead. Have the courtesy to cancel your appointment so the dose can be reallocated though!

Fishandhips · 20/05/2021 17:40

Don't have it then?

Being overweight is also a risk factor for clots, do you worry about that every day?

Mummytemping · 20/05/2021 17:41

I sympathise. I was in the same position a week ago, in my thirties and deciding whether to get my second AZ dose. I asked about whether I could get another option and was told no.

In the end I looked at the data and the risk was still smaller than taking the pill, which I’ve taken. I had COVID last year and despite having no risk factors, was quite ill (got secondary pneumonia). So don’t want to get it again.

I admit that despite the logic saying it was very low odds, I still felt nervous but went ahead despite the nerves. All fine so far and glad to have had it.

Best of luck with your decision.

StrikingMatches · 20/05/2021 17:42

You're probably more likely to be hit by a bus on your way to get your second dose.

TidyOmlette · 20/05/2021 17:45

If you don’t want it don’t take it. You have obviously made your mind up regarding it.

There’s health risks in every single medication you will ever take.

Aposterhasnoname · 20/05/2021 17:47

Honestly how do people live when they get this het up about something so vanishingly unlikely. It’s a wonder you ever leave the house lest you’re hit by a car, or lightening, or trip and hit your head badly, or get murdered, or catch one of the very many viruses including COVID that are knocking about. Sorry (not sorry) if I’m being harsh but this is getting silly now, it’s every Fucking day. Don’t have your second vaccine then, fine, but don’t expect everyone to tell you you’re doing the right thing, and don’t be surprised if you end up catching COVID.

TruelyStruttingHotpants · 20/05/2021 17:48

These threads are some of the most interesting things on mumsnet. Brilliant psychology lessons can be learnt on them. Bloody fascinating the way different people weigh up risk.

Look OP lots of people that have been working for years in science and medicine made the guidance. Trust them. If we were in Germany right now anyone over 18 would be able to have AZ. So if you don't trust our government. Trust one of the most logical thinking governments in Europe.
