2nd AZ Vaccine or start again?

user77hjjy · 14/05/2021 02:51

I'm due to have my 2nd dose later on today.

I'm 24.

I don't know whether I should start again with a different vaccine.

Erm, if you are 24, then I guess you have good reason for having it.

I’d take it now.

They are pulling the jabs from the millennials, because you know, fuck us.

Take it. The risk of clots is really really tiny but feels larger because of the media. And the clots are treatable anyway, now we know what they are and can respond quickly. Take the jab.

Nootkah · 14/05/2021 07:31

The medical advice is to have thebsecond of the same if touve already had tour first dose of a particular vaccine. Aa others have said, you wont be allowed to "start again" as you are recorded as having had your first dose. Your chouces are have it, or dont.

nancywhitehead · 14/05/2021 07:55

I would say have it. I'm in the same position, quite young and have had my first AZ. I will have the second.

The risk of clots is miniscule.

MRex · 14/05/2021 08:03

Trials of taking two different vaccines haven't completed yet. The first stage results showed stronger side effects from having two different vaccines: www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-57075503.amp. Efficacy hasn't yet been confirmed but will hopefully be the same or higher than one vaccine alone. If you wait a month then you might get more information about that, but obviously will need to be prepared for stronger side effects or JCVI stating they will not recommend any mixing.

If you didn't have an autoimmune response to the first vaccine then you are not very likely to have an autoimmune response to the second vaccine. The risks are really very small for all age groups, but covid risks have reduced for now and that changes the balance. The second dose will give you longer lasting and stronger immunity. Have you thought about talking with your GP or consultant to help make the decision based on your personal circumstances?

PurpleDaisies · 14/05/2021 08:06

Are you worried about the risk of clots?

The MHRA has said that they didn’t find increased risk after the second dose. Have your second AZ jab as planned.

PatchworkElmer · 14/05/2021 08:09

I’m in the same position as you and will be having my second jab.

25yearsnhsworker · 14/05/2021 08:11

My DD 18 emailed GP concerned about second one and he said to carry on and have it. Not sure about mixing them and research done.

Ninefeettall · 14/05/2021 08:11

The MHRA has said that they didn’t find increased risk after the second dose. Have your second AZ jab as planned.

And a few weeks ago they said there was no link to blood clotting problems with the first dose. Hmm

Then they said 1 in a million. It’s now 17.5 in a million for age 30 - 39 and we will probably never know the true risk since they’ve stopped rolling it out to younger people.

It’s not crazy for the OP to think it might not be be safe.

OP, without knowing what your risk from Covid is it’s hard to say. I’m not getting my second - or at least delaying - but I was not jabbed due to any personal risk.

JeanClaudeVanDammit · 14/05/2021 08:14

If you’ve had it at 24 then you’re either at risk of becoming seriously ill with covid or transmitting it to someone else who is vulnerable, to have been eligible to date. The risk/benefit is different to someone who hasn’t been invited for it so far. Have the second dose.

The only difference I would have with this post is that the risk is even less than "really really tiny". It also appears to be associated with first shots not second, although it is early to be 100% sure on that. The predominant theory right now, given that Covid itself is also associated with clotting, is that it is part of the immune system response, but a very small number of people are unlucky enough for it to have an impact on them.

FWIIW, all the vaccines have been associated with some serious (including death) but infinitesimally rare risks. I can guarantee you that you routinely do many far riskier things every single day. You just don't realise the risk you are taking, and so don't think about it.

Thunderdonkey · 14/05/2021 08:21

A quick Google suggests your risk of death from a car accident is 42.2 deaths per million population. I hope anyone not getting the jab because of a risk of clots, is not planning any car journeys any time soon!

Frazzled2207 · 14/05/2021 08:22

I don’t think you can start again
I get the concerns about Az but if you had the first one and we’re ok you will be again.

UCOinanOCG · 14/05/2021 08:25

You can't start over so you should get your second dose.

IndigoC · 14/05/2021 10:07

The odds appear to be tiny for the second dose.

Exactly
TruelyWonder · 14/05/2021 10:19

Just do it. If the cases go up because of the India variant they will start using AZ again across all age groups. Like Germany are now doing. The only reason they stopped here was because cases were so low. The risk of covid to a young person was tiny. If you believe the headlines that could change quickly 🤷‍♀️

Spekoppar · 14/05/2021 12:23

I’m in the same position and will be following the medical and scientific advise and having it.

ittakes2 · 14/05/2021 15:06

They won't let you have anything but AZ.

KingdomScrolls · 14/05/2021 19:27

I had my second AZ yesterday, I'm 35. I took the pill for years which has a higher risk of blood clots than this vaccination

User657849 · 14/05/2021 21:54

Found out today that a family friend’s daughter (late 20s) who had Covid, developed blood clots in her lungs and is still on blood thinners.

I don’t mean to scare you, but to remind you that risking getting Covid is not a safe bet.

Which is why we take precautions.

Seat belts. Speeding limits.

Exactly.

I'm not even one to believe the scaremongering.

Spent hours debating with friends and family saying it was judt that, scaremongering.
However, if I were to go to have my 1st jab today I wouldn't be offered AZ.

Thank you for your reply.
