2nd AZ Vaccine or start again?

user77hjjy · 14/05/2021 02:51

I'm due to have my 2nd dose later on today.

I'm 24.

I don't know whether I should start again with a different vaccine.

You can't start over so you should get your second dose.
I can. The advisor said they can book me in for a different vaccine.

What - the advisor said they could do something that hasn't been approved by the regulator? Sure they did....Hmm

Aalvarino · 14/05/2021 23:01

I'd be very very surprised if it were true that you could switch vaccine. Is this approved yet in non-trial cohorts?
Lots of things are much riskier than this jab... Even after accounting for safety precautions.

nukeitfromorbit · 14/05/2021 23:08

All the reactions happened after the first dose of AZ so if you were fine after first you will be fine with the second. I understand why you were worried its natural with the negative effects being very much in the news for you to be concerned even if the evidence doesn't really support it. I'm not going to pretend that side effects never happen but they really are very rare. I hope whatever happened today you feel reassured and will be protected soon.

She said she can cancel my booking and book me in for my 1st jab of a different vaccine.

You're right, lots of things are riskier than the jab which is why we weigh up options.

Getting in a car can be dangerous. Drinking alcohol can be dangerous. Smoking can be dangerous.

Each one of us weighs up the individual pros and cons for us. I'm not sure what point you're trying to make.

Mixing vaccines is outwith the scope of the PGD that the vaccinator practices under.

Comefromaway · 14/05/2021 23:49

Dd is 19 and due her second dose of AZ next week. She had quite a lot of side effects after her first dose including headaches. It is scary but she will have her second dose.

Incidentally the reason she was eligible (unpaid carer) no longer applies as the person she helped care for is now in full time residential care.

Is she going to have it?

I was really ill for 1-2 weeks after my first dose also.
I could not get out of bed.

If the doctor is prepared to give it to you then you should have it, they know better than internet randoms who could have different agendas.
TruelyWonder · 15/05/2021 03:04

If you look on the threads here and read the surveys done by PHE and the EMA the first dose of AZ is normally the worst.

Second doses tend to be little or no side effects. Opposite way around with Pfizer and Moderna

Of course everybody is different and no guarantees

A while back Internet strangers were speculating about the blood clots and the NHS said if was fine and now they aren't giving it to my age group as a 1st dose.

Yeah I noticed that.

I know others who had AZ with little to no side effects but it caught up with me for a week!
Could be due to my underlying illnesses however.

The reason they aren't is because the number of covid cases is so low, should they rise again, the balance of risk will swing again and guidance will change. Personally I would have it rather than wait for the results of the mixed trials, I've had both AZ so was in the same position.
Roboticcarrot · 15/05/2021 06:10

Also I was poorly after the first jab, second was absolutely fine.

Pippioddstocking · 15/05/2021 06:13

Changing vaccine for the second dose goes against everything we have been advised by the government ( vaccinator)
The people who book the vaccines are not clinical. I think they’ve made an error.
There are no circumstances currently in which the government would allow this ( unless you were on a registered trial to check vaccine efficacy with mixed vaccines).
No Dr or Nurse can go against the Government rules for ANY reason.

Exactly this! If you turned up at the hub I worked at for a 1st Pfizer dose after already having a 1st AZ you would be turned away
Doomsdayisstillcoming · 15/05/2021 07:35

What are your underlying issues?

titchy · 15/05/2021 10:48

What reason do I have to make it up?

Given the number of scare stories anti vax era posters make up on here who knows, you could be one of them. You tell us your reasons.

She said she can cancel my booking and book me in for my 1st jab of a different vaccine.

Well she wasn't authorised to say that. And if you rock up at a Pfizer centre you won't be given that vaccine seeing as it hasn't been approved for people who have already had AZ.

So good luck, but you won't be able to start again with a different vaccine. Unless you're prepared to wait a few months for approval to be granted, assuming it is.

An anti vaxxer that got vaccinated and spends hours telling people to do so, okay.

Thank you but I can. She checked with her manager and can book me in.

Expect to be turned away from the vaccination site though.

Your words OP???? PP was just asking you what the underlying illnesses are that you are saying you have.

This is all a bit strange tbh Confused

newnortherner111 · 16/05/2021 07:31

I think you made the right decision to have the 2nd dose, OP. Why you were able to have a vaccine earlier than most 24 year olds is none of our business.
