Independent SAGE: Lockdown easing must be delayed

FriedHam · 12/05/2021 13:18

I see Independent sage have said that the lockdown easing planned for Monday must be cancelled. This would mean that pubs and restaurants would remain closed indoors and home visiting would not be permitted.

www.theguardian.com/world/2021/may/12/indian-covid-variant-calls-in-question-17-may-reopening-in-uk-say-experts

Christina Pagel of independent sage has said this is necessary because of the Indian variant spreading across the country. However, there is no evidence that the vaccines are any less effective against the Indian variant.

Personally I'm just not sure that we can justify keeping businesses closed for longer and the inevitable job losses that will follow on the off chance that a particular variant may cause problems for the vaccine.

So is this a real danger that necessitates cancelling the easing or a desperate attempt by independent sage to remain relevant?

Me too ;

SonnetForSpring · 14/05/2021 11:34

@MarshaBradyo

Yep

I think some posters won’t go out to eat, holiday, theatre, meet people inside for years, it’s up to them though.

Personal choice is not going to happen. Complete nonsense. How do you envisage that working in reality? Delusional.
MarshaBradyo · 14/05/2021 11:36

It’s not actually Sonnet I’m not making it up MH own words - it is what we are working towards next.

You may recoil in horror as you seem to be, and emote, and admittedly like anything it is data dependent, but it’s not posted out of thin air.

TheKeatingFive · 14/05/2021 11:36

Personal choice is not going to happen

It already is.

Plenty of people never kept to restrictions or started to break them.

Equally there are people who barely left their house prior to the pandemic.

SonnetForSpring · 14/05/2021 11:38

Ok well, good luck with that! Its simply an illusion to keep people engaged and hopeful.

SonnetForSpring · 14/05/2021 11:40

MH, the same day who is making a mint out of the pandemic while crying on tv about the joy of vaccines. Hilarious

MarshaBradyo · 14/05/2021 11:40

Here you go

“What we want to do is get rid of the social distancing-type laws that get in the way of normal life and move to personal responsibility, rather than laws dictating how all of us live our daily lives.”

I get you will be inside Sonnet saying good luck to everyone as you are.

The rest of us will do stuff.

SonnetForSpring · 14/05/2021 11:40

*guy not day

TheKeatingFive · 14/05/2021 11:40

good luck with that!

Good luck with what? Compliance is not a given.

MarshaBradyo · 14/05/2021 11:41

Ridiculous.

Try not to be sore about personal responsibility and getting back to normal. There’s no need.

SonnetForSpring · 14/05/2021 11:44

No, I'm not inside as you put it. I continue my life within the guidelines. I work, volunteer, socialise, take the kids places, they go to school. But I do get tested twice a week. I wear a mask, wash hands, I ensure anywhere I go has adequate ventilation etc etc. This is not a binary argument. Personal choice does not come into it at all. It is about collect discipline.
The government know this. You are being completely naive and extremely presumptuous.

TheKeatingFive · 14/05/2021 11:46

It is about collect discipline.

Which is dissipating every single day,

SonnetForSpring · 14/05/2021 11:46

It's not me who is going to get a shock.. I have adapted and I'm at peace with the fact we are living with covid. Have you actually tried to sit down and apply any logic to your arguments.

MarshaBradyo · 14/05/2021 11:47

Why?

I didn’t say it MH did Confused take it up with him if you have a such a strong reaction to the words

SonnetForSpring · 14/05/2021 11:47

@TheKeatingFive

Sorry I meant collective discipline. Yes, it is dissipating, hence why there will be another wave. It's not rocket science. Come on.
MarshaBradyo · 14/05/2021 11:48

It’s the stated aim Sonnet I don’t have to argue for or against it for it to happen.

It will if data permits

SonnetForSpring · 14/05/2021 11:49

I couldn't give two hoots about Matt Hancock. God help people who are actually looking to him for inspiration.

MarshaBradyo · 14/05/2021 11:49

It’s not now but the aim

Things will change

SonnetForSpring · 14/05/2021 11:50

If data permits. I'm telling you data will not permit. You're trying to square a circle.

TheKeatingFive · 14/05/2021 11:50

Personal choice does not come into it

I’m not sure how you arrive at this. Of course it does.

I’m in ROI, not UK, but I have neighbours who have been in and out of relatives/friends houses, have had parties, play dates, sleep overs, been to the hairdresser and got nails done, drunk in the unlicensed bar, been to Tenerife - all of this between Jan and March of this year, when we were under strict lockdown.

They found a way.

SonnetForSpring · 14/05/2021 11:52

It's a manipulation technique. They know people want personal choice. So hey ho, let's dangle it in front of them like a carrot to keep them plodding on.

SonnetForSpring · 14/05/2021 11:53

The government and media need to stop manipulating and start educating. Unfortunately, people don't like the facts and don't want to learn so that's a slight obstacle.

MarshaBradyo · 14/05/2021 11:54

@SonnetForSpring

If data permits. I'm telling you data will not permit. You're trying to square a circle.
Ha at this

You should write to Chris Whitty with that level of certainty he could use your insight I’m sure

SonnetForSpring · 14/05/2021 11:58

You are actually proud of that aren't you. Did you know humans are social animals because or keeps us safe. We actually have to work as a group in the face of serious threats, that means globally.... where does personal choice come into it?
SonnetForSpring · 14/05/2021 12:00

You're wasting your energy Marsha. It won't change things.
