@wintertravel1980

Let us hope that Bolton has turned the corner. The test positivity rate has been going down over past 5 days.

The remaining hotspots are, unfortunately, still on the rise (with Blackburn hitting 7.9% - a relatively high level at the current stage of pandemic).

Useful tweets and charts here about the age range of people affected in Bolton. Seems very clear that vaccine is having an extremely positive effect. twitter.com/VictimOfMaths/status/1396767858101821446

Numbers have possibly come down a bit now but I'm a bit uncomfortable with the idea of covid circulating massively in schools. Even if kids have no symptoms that doesn't mean they won't get long covid.
However I saw another tweet the other day that suggested if you closed the schools in Bolton that wouldn't necessarily help because the children will probably end up mixing even more than they did at school. At least at school they are mostly mixing with the same lot every day.

England NHS data updated.

Not great really.

Weekly (15th to 22nd) fell 9.9%. (810 to 730).

However a mean weekend bounce has taken us back to 797 (a 9.2% increase for the week so far, eroding pretty much all last weeks gains).

Rolling 7 day average for admissions has risen to 82 on 22nd May, from a low of 74 (on 17th May).

The bottom of the peak, or a bumpy plateau. Time will tell.

Doomsdayisstillcoming · 24/05/2021 16:38

Sorry that wasn’t clear. Weekly numbers in hospital in England*.

Would like to see that tweet re kids mixing if schools are open or closed, @Frazzled2207 -?

wintertravel1980 · 24/05/2021 16:45

Thanks, Frazzled2207, it is a great summary.

Blackburn has got a lower vaccination rate than Bolton so, unfortunately, cases in 60s+ also seem to be on the rise. Looks like even a few percent difference in vaccine uptake may be having a significant impact on the spread.

This might explain why Wales is doing so well (with 8.6/100,000 prevalence).

Choirs & wind/brass instruments always pretty much the last thing to resume at home. I don’t think that recent paper with the infected choir member in Australia managing to infect someone 15m away helped either.

There must be a fair few things involving talking louder than normal without masks that they are considering allowing though.

There was research done based on flu that I remember reading and posting here last year, I found it because it had been looked at as part of the Sage discussions. I expect that's what they're basing it on. Unless there's some new research from last year.
JanFebAnyMonth · 24/05/2021 16:51

Thanks. I don’t see how kids would mix more out of school, and certainly not as many households, but maybe there are specific community reasons.

JanFebAnyMonth · 24/05/2021 16:53

Cross posted MRex. Doesn’t read as if the Dep DPH is referring to research, more local community knowledge?

Ah. Thanks. After considering this, I've now booked my second dose for this week (week 10) instead of week 12.
Frazzled2207 · 24/05/2021 16:57

I suppose in families where parents have to work out of the home the kids might be more likely to be looked after by another family if not at school. They might also “play out” with children outside their school bubble. But difficult to see how transmission between children could be higher than it would be at school. Of course there’s lots of benefits in keeping them all at school as much as possible. Keeping them confined to the home is all very well but perhaps unrealistic IF the community is not compliant. As long as they are at school, it’s easier to keep track of where they’ve been recently.

Is it possible to do that it you’re under 50 do you know? Doesn’t affect me but would like to bring dh’s forward a bit, is 43

Frazzled2207 · 24/05/2021 17:01

Vaccination data in Manchester (the city not GM) is worryingly low. Less than 50% first dose. Surge vaccinations for 18+ in certain communities happening now.

Frazzled2207 · 24/05/2021 17:01

Sorry I meant vaccination take up not data. According to the data!

MRex · 24/05/2021 17:02

I'm group 6, so I don't know. Quite possibly you can, there were loads of slots available this week for me. Worth a try in the brief pause before they invite another age group anyway.

Firefliess · 24/05/2021 17:02

@Mrex -could I ask how easy it was too do rebook? I'm nervous of cancelling my appointment and then finding I can't get a sooner one.

Think it’ll depend what he had. AZ probably. Pfizer/Mod unlikely.

I don’t have a booking for my second yet, surgery organised it. Went on booking site and i can book for August 4th, which is exactly 11 weeks after 1st. Had Pfizer.

MRex · 24/05/2021 17:04

Really easy, I went in and hit cancel, selected the site quickly. If there was nothing earlier then I'd have seen my original and rebooked it, but there were loads.

JanFebAnyMonth · 24/05/2021 17:05

Welsh CMO and Health Ministers worried about their 57 IV cases, especially as they look at what’s happening across the borders:

EducatingArti · 24/05/2021 17:38

I think the school's issue is older children or teenagers. If they are not in school they tend to go rampaging round the local area in large groups ( at least they do round here) and may be mixing with others in different year groups and schools.

feelinggeriatric · 24/05/2021 17:40

I posted on here last week asking about rebooking and I cancelled and had tons of options much earlier from 9 weeks - I'm 46 .

MargaretThursday · 24/05/2021 17:41

Having got dc of secondary school age I'd dispute this... it does sound a little like our government throwing their hands up again and saying "what can we do except keep schools open."

When the dc's schools have been closed, either through bubbles popping or through government order, my dc have not socialised with any except one time when one met up with one other schoolfriend and went for a walk.
I wouldn't say they're unusual. At work we have the police radio for the town. You can normally tell when a school has a half day by the number of calls about groups of youngsters (normally refusing to move out of the car park or something). Lockdowns or bubble popping, very little, and having been into town, you aren't getting them hanging around in the way they did precovid during the week, or even at weekends. As soon as schools go back, yes, but not while they're off.

JanFebAnyMonth · 24/05/2021 17:42

But @EducatingArti, that will only be a minority - if only because many many will be stuck in their bedrooms doing goodness knows what online - and many of those with whom they’re “hanging” will be from their in school bubble.
