According to the dashboard, cases are up by 3.1% across the last 7 days.

2357 cases
4 deaths
101 admissions

And testing up 8.9% in the same time. I think the BH will be messing with things a bit still in terms of week on week comparisons, especially given the schools LFT - there were 50% more LFTs yesterday than last Sunday, for example.
PatriciaHolm · 10/05/2021 16:55

though, caveat... as already observed and detailed by boys3, the overall figures hide individual rises, in many cases driven by the new variant.

LEnferCestLesAutres · 10/05/2021 17:01

Christina Pagel has just tweeted about the latest Sanger Institute figs twitter.com/chrischirp/status/1391780417993334785
She notes that the new Indian VOC has gone from 1% to 11% of cases in 2 weeks. That sounds worrying to me, though I guess it is still 11% of a small total?
Is there any research yet on whether current vaccines are effective against the Indian VOC?

MargaretThursday · 10/05/2021 17:30

@AnneofScreamFables

Can I just say a massive THANK YOU to *@LittleOwl1* for COVID messenger. Best wishes to you - your emails really helped me feel in control and informed about the situation.
Agreed!
AlecTrevelyan006 · 10/05/2021 17:43

All 4 deaths in Wales - none in England, Scotland or Northern Ireland

boys3 · 10/05/2021 17:55

To be a bit pagelesque about things the 11% for the B1.617.2 will in reality turn out a little higher once all the standard genome testing for w/e 1st May feeds through.

Taking last weeks Sanger file 3576 genomes completed for w/e 24 Apr of which the B1.617.2 accounted for 2.8%. In today’s update the overall figure for that week has increased to 4640 of which 3.4% are B1.617.2. So we might reasonably expect the latest week to in reality turn out around the 13% mark.

And whilst channelling my inner CP have any of those mass gatherings end of last week, election counts as I believe they are also referred to, led to any outbreaks? Given the very short lag team probably too early to tell just yet.

Brilliant boys3 thank you for that Sanger information.

It is quite telling of how absorbed into the world of pandemic science communicators I have become, that I know exactly what you mean when you say pagelesque !!!

everythingthelighttouches · 10/05/2021 18:08

This is for you boys3

CP isn’t even on this list but I’m sure we all know quite a few and could add a few of our own.

Is there a breakdown anywhere on the Bolton figures? Do we know of the people testing positive have had vaccines or the severity of illness?

Firefliess · 10/05/2021 18:44

Nice graph here on Twitter plotting % of sequenced cases that are the Indian variant against growth in case rates. twitter.com/theosanderson/status/1391740864712646663?s=19

He's drawn in a line of best fit, though it doesn't look to be a very clear relationship to me. Useful approach to seeing whether the Indian variant is noticeably more transmittable though, given the delays in data from sequencing.

Update to the tables posted earlier using the latest Sanger data released today. The councils in red are the ones I think newly added; and Bournemouth should now be in its correct region.

Sefton is an interesting case, it seems to be specifically Formby - which is the posh end of Sefton and very Caucasian in demographic. If the variant is taking off there then powers that be will be very worried as vaccine take up rates have been high, there’s not much deprivation or multi generational living as is the case in other NW towns

KatChocolate · 10/05/2021 20:30

Is this what happened when the Kent variant started to become a VOC?

I haven’t watched tonight’s briefing, just read Prof.CP’s thread and hoping that even though restrictions are easing, as long as we all remain vigilant the Indian Variant won’t spread out of control, or at least not until all are double vaxed!

Fingers crossed!

My in laws are in Southport so I have noticed the rise too when checking their stats and too was surprised given the demographic there, an elderly population who have all presumably been vaccinated. A quick google showed an outbreak linked to Formby swimming pool so hopefully that explains the outbreak and fingers crossed their numbers go down soon again.
EducatingArti · 10/05/2021 21:34

Sheer anecdote here but I am feeling pretty unwell right now with a sore throat and a mild cough. No temperature. I have got a PCR booked for tomorrow. I did a lateral flow tonight which was negative.
I think it is unlikely to be Covid and I have had one Pfizer dose so more likely to be the cold that my friends toddlers have been ill with. However I live not far from Bolton so I am slightly worried. I'll keep you updated!!

EducatingArti · 10/05/2021 21:35

Oh and I have been helping my friend take her toddlers swimming ( we are in a support bubble so allowed) but not a Formby pool thankfully.

Frazzled2207 · 10/05/2021 21:43

I am quite suspicious of the fact that nothing was mentioned at the presser about Bolton/Erewash etc.

I actually wonder if someone is taking notice ( I mean clearly they are locally but at government level).
I wonder that with Bolton, if it's affecting ethnic minorities who have low vaccine take-up, they think that it won't necessarily significantly spread outside the communities in which it's currently spreading. Seems a bit of a gamble and worrying to think that a vast array of restrictions are eased next week. There is def time for it to stabilise a bit though, and hopefully come down a bit

TheSunIsStillShining · 10/05/2021 21:46

After running errands today I don't feel optimistic. I had to ask a lady with 2 kids to move back from me. She was standing so close that even pre-covid times I would have done that.
And she argued that boris and sage said that we are in the all clear and she already had the vaccine, so she can't spread it.
Half the people didn't wear masks, mostly no social distancing. As if covid disappeared.
I think media and gov are being reckless with what and how they are communicating.

TheSunIsStillShining · 10/05/2021 21:51

@Frazzled2207 about 20-23% of people are fully vaccinated. Less than 50% half vaccinated*. Why are people think that this is good enough to drop all our guard?
And if we looked at the age/ethnic distribution of vaccinated people, it would turn out -probably- that full generations are still spreading/getting sick.

Yes, I'm happy that the number of hospitalizations/deaths have decreased, but that is only half the story. Specifically now people should be cautious and go about life with some pragmatic outlook - wear mask, sd, don't mingle in closed spaces. You know, just to be on the safe side. And maybe not cause another wave of the indian or other mutation.

*of whole pop, not just adults
