More discussion on the PHE data on effectiveness of vaccines against the Indian variant from Deepti Gurdasani.

mobile.twitter.com/dgurdasani1/status/1396033110396088322

In summary
"All this tells us that a surge in infections leading to high levels of hospitalisations is quite likely even with current levels of vaccination, if we don't put in mitigations, and continue with our current roadmap as is."

ceeveebee · 22/05/2021 11:37

Anecdotal - but I was talking with a relative of mine who is a GP in another area of Greater Manchester which has previously been badly hit and has similar demographics to Bolton. She tells me that when they have done door to door campaigns, they have spoken to many people who do not have smartphones and so didn’t receive text messages, didn’t have any way of booking online, received letters in English which is not their first language, and couldn’t get through on 119 when they tried, or could only get appointments which were not easily accessible without a car. Many of them have now been vaccinated after holding local drop in clinics with no appointments needed. So it’s not always about reluctance, sometimes it’s just the practical issues that cause lower take up rates

astery · 22/05/2021 12:43

I am not registered with my mobile phone at the GP so did not get a text. I am ecv. Did not get a letter until the government were announcing that everyone ecv had been offered a first jab. Rang 119 and waited ages and gave up. Went online to book anyway and only appointment offered was 35 miles away. I kept retrying over a few days and eventually booked time off work and drive 35 miles for my jab.
Agree it is not always reluctance.

lonelyplanet · 22/05/2021 13:17

I'm not sure is reluctance in Bolton. I think that was a blame game by the government to explain why cases were rising.

I'm not sure there is reluctance...

lonelyplanet · 22/05/2021 13:43

From the BBC.

You have to question why Germany are taking our growing problem more seriously than we are.

Data, Stats & Daily Numbers started 9th May
Quartz2208 · 22/05/2021 14:02

The Germany reaction though is odd considering that

  1. they have the Indian Variant themselves
  2. they test significantly less than us so have no idea how many cases there are
  3. they have higher levels at the moment - more cases and deaths

www.thelocal.de/20210520/how-worried-should-germany-be-about-the-covid-variant-from-india/

ajmouse · 22/05/2021 14:11

We do seem particularly interested in variants in this country - especially the media who love a good "triple mutant" scare headline. Worth keeping an eye on them though. I'm not too fussed about the Indian variant replacing the Kent one in principle - if it competes better even by a little bit that will happen. It's if these scare models coming out of Warwick University (as a user on Reddit keeps posting) come to pass that it's a big concern.

Latest ZOE prediction is a little lower in the daily figure by 100 or so. So it would seem that overall symptomatic Covid is fairly stable, although I know ZOE is a bit questionable as they keep having to change their model.

MRex · 22/05/2021 14:23

Germany had 73105 cases in the will to 10th May and 2% were Indian variant based on their more limited genome testing. That's 1462 cases in that week, which is higher than the estimate for the same week in the UK. Unfortunately Germany isn't getting later results through quickly, so we don't know their current situation. They have quarantined a housing estate of 200 or so people, so I'm guessing there are increases.

Everybody needs a fall guy when things go wrong, the UK is being lined up to be Germany's fall guy again, just in case.

MRex · 22/05/2021 14:24

*week not will

Firefliess · 22/05/2021 14:59

Most over 60s will have had both doses. The 40-60 age have mostly had just one for at least a fortnight. So I think the Bolton data does fit with two doses giving most protection

MargaretThursday · 22/05/2021 15:07

@astery
Dh didn't have a mobile number registered with the GP so they phoned on the landline

MRex · 22/05/2021 15:10

Where is the BBC report button, any ideas? They're saying 50m vaccine doses not 60m.

@MRex - that is correct for England though. The 60m is for the UK.

MRex · 22/05/2021 15:22

Ah! Good to know in at the top of my game today then, thanks!
Mental note: must actually read info...

Not going to dispute first part of this but dont agree with last point. Thought this was a data thread.
Frazzled2207 · 22/05/2021 16:56

@lonelyplanet

I'm not sure there is reluctance...
Also I know that since May 16 there has been a lot more vaccinating in Bolton. Those stats look pretty good to me.
Frazzled2207 · 22/05/2021 17:11

interesting graphs re Bolton here. Tentatively encouraging...

Jon Deeks is reporting similar:

Unfortunately @EducatingArti the way they've behaved round the schools this last year, then I can fully believe it.

BeaMinus · 22/05/2021 20:53
Really worrying.
herecomesthsun · 22/05/2021 21:02

I was just coming on here to post this.

JanFebAnyMonth · 22/05/2021 21:07

I couldn’t fathom what Deeks was so shocked about when I first saw that tweet, as the DHSC said they’d publish all the data very shortly. However in the light of that Observer article, I’m now wondering a) what the results show interns of school infection rates and b) when exactly they are going to publish it.
