@wintertravel1980

I am going to sound like a broken record but we really need to increase surge vaccinations in Bolton, Blackburn and Bedford. We have got the capacity. It will mean people in other areas might get their jabs one week later but it is the logical thing to do.

We now need to focus on transmissions not just on deaths and hospitalisations and we can make an impact within 7-10 days by vaccinating younger population in hot spots.

Agree. It has been a few weeks now since they did this in Moray, and cases are dropping fast. Not necessarily related, but good to see. (Though, this isn't primarily the Indian variant.)

Great that surge vaccinating is already happening. Hopefully, Bedford will soon catch up with the other local authorities.

I can see why the government does not "officially" announce it as a strategy. Other local leaders (e.g. Sadiq Khan) will immediately ask for their share of vaccines. However, we have to deal with the immediate fires and they are in Bolton, Blackburn and other places with high prevalence.

Bolton on its own accounted for 10% of all the UK cases reported today.

Frazzled2207 · 20/05/2021 18:46

@CaptainMerica
that's good news about Moray. But I'm not sure we can directly compare because
a. Moray is a predominantly rural population, quite the opposite of Bolton etc.
b. no talk of Indian variant up there
c. the numbers involved are not remotely comparable

Absolutely think they should try the same approach but it's no quick fix is it

whataballbag · 20/05/2021 18:51

Surge vaccines definitely happening here in Blackburn.

Local Council/CCG have opened up 4 new Pfizer vacc sites and increased appointments at existing ones.

Open to anyone 18+ (falling under usual catagories) - but will 'find a reason to vaccinate', including if you work with someone vulnerable.

MRex · 20/05/2021 18:59

Yes, I'm near a potential fire in West London, but clearly the bits currently in flames need the blankets first.

Happy to see more wastewater info, I really wish they would do us even a weekly table or map to look at, even if I can understand the sensitivity of "aaaaargh but there's no coverage at all in X county".

True, very different to Bolton.

MRex · 20/05/2021 19:17

The other difference with Bolton, Blackburn and Bedford is that they have all consistently been problem areas for covid. Vaccination has a chance of being a more permanent solution for areas that have systemic issues meaning covid spreads more easily, whereas other areas could have an outbreak start up but more quickly get on top of it.

BobaCobb · 20/05/2021 19:19

@Piggywaspushed

Apparently surge vaccination coming to Bedford. Problem is Pfizer.
What’s wrong with Pfizer?
Piggywaspushed · 20/05/2021 19:21

Nothing. None in local area.

Piggywaspushed · 20/05/2021 19:22

That's true MRex but it is interesting to note that IV doesn't seem active in Luton (yet).

lurker101 · 20/05/2021 19:47

Hounslow seem to be gearing up for some form of surge vaccinations, so hopefully that would placate Sadiq Khan from demanding additional vaccines for the rest of London.

www.hounslow.gov.uk/news/article/2351/joint_statement_from_phe_and_hounslow_council_on_surge_testing_and_increased_vaccination_in_the_borough

NuttyinNotts · 20/05/2021 19:55

I think with surge vaccinations what they really need to do is almost divide areas into 3 tracks. Those who need surge vaccinations now, those who are looking a little iffy where they really need to stay on track and those areas that can afford to be slowed down slightly. Because the likelihood is more areas will become problems and we already have good ideas of where they are and then there are areas that have never been problem areas, that don't have the same socioeconomic and demographic challenges that make them likely to become problem areas etc. etc.

Frazzled2207 · 20/05/2021 20:19

I'm in a different borough of GM and pleased to see that there is a walk in vaccination clinic starting tomorrow offering AZ to all. Well officially for 36+ but the wording suggests they will be somewhat flexible. A really good idea as there must be some excess AZ floating about and plenty of people happy to have it. It's also virtually the only place in the entire borough which is vaccinating under 50s.

Hope this doesn’t come up with a paywall. All these leaks prove is that community levels in most areas are low at present, surely? We need to await the full report, obviously.

MRex · 20/05/2021 21:12

15/58000 = 1 in 3867. I think this shows those who attend large events are more likely to have covid than average. Now I've written that, it's obvious of course. Don't mind me...

They PCRd them all?

What was the protocol for testing again? Sorry too lazy to check. Was it a LFT in front of someone?

I could have told you those areas in April/May 2020.

As could anyone on this thread.

wintertravel1980 · 20/05/2021 21:47

This is consistent with what was said about surge vaccinations in GM earlier on this thread:

www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/over-18s-high-risk-neighbourhoods-20642427

Good to know it is actually happening!

Frazzled2207 · 20/05/2021 22:27

Fairly terrifying graph of cases among 5-9 age group in Bolton

As a mother of two children in a nearby borough this is very worrying. Nobody wants more lockdowns and they don’t necessarily work anyway but is it really ok to let covid run riot through all the schools?
I’m guessing a lot of the cases are through surge testing and hopefully many have no symptoms

Data, Stats & Daily Numbers started 9th May
MargaretThursday · 20/05/2021 22:36

Surge vaccinations apparently in Hart, which I've heard had schools shut. Apparently they've said anyone over 18 can book a vaccination as of today. (relatives there)

brondary · 20/05/2021 22:39

@Doomsdayisstillcoming where I live it is a white working-class area where the new variant is an issue.

Doomsdayisstillcoming · 20/05/2021 22:49
@Doomsdayisstillcoming where I live it is a white working-class area where the new variant is an issue.
Yeah? What’s that got to do with anything?

My point was: certain areas have been higher. The reasons for that are irrelevant. And no fault of the people who live there but are driven by economic reasons primarily. But these areas needed everyone vaccinated way before some 30 year old in Suffolk (like me).

JanFebAnyMonth · 20/05/2021 23:31

@Doomsdayisstillcoming for the events I read about, yes, a LFT plus wait for result on the way in. But they trialled different processes at different events I think. Which will possibly confuse the results somewhat?
And one of the key stats we need to know is how many actually got tested after the event. As we discussed at the time, they couldn’t be made to comply with that part.

KickBishopBrennanUpTheArse · 20/05/2021 23:36

Our local vaccination centre today posted on Facebook they had Pfizer vaccines and walk ins were welcome. Anyone over 33 welcome to turn up or anyone else "with concerns".

Big queues apparently.

Our rates are relatively low but nearest hospital is in Greater Manchester where rates have previously been very high.

JanFebAnyMonth · 21/05/2021 00:09

It just struck me as I cleaned my teeth:

Isn’t the most likely reason for seemingly high rates in children in Indian variant areas ( that Bolton graph posted by eg C Pagel) the fact that it is more likely to produce symptoms in children (read some comments from a doctor in India earlier) therefore it’s more likely they’ll be tested?

Maybe that has been said before on here, apologies if it has.
