Just went on the national vaccination website to see if you can now book vaccines in my area. I am number 305 in the queue.

brondary · 20/05/2021 11:56

You also need to be registered with a GP to book a vaccination. A surprising number of young adults are not registered. Especially men as they do not even need contraception.

ceeveebee · 20/05/2021 12:01

That’s shocking @brondary that you haven’t been able to book an appointment any time in the last 3 months! Did your GP not contact you? I booked on the National system the day that I became eligible but also got a letter and a GP text the next day!

brondary · 20/05/2021 12:13

@ceeveebee Sorry if I was not clear. I am now vaccinated. But it was not easy to book and I did not get my letter until after the news were saying all cev had been offered a jab.

brondary · 20/05/2021 12:14

A friend who is cev had to travel 35 miles to get second jab.

Firefliess · 20/05/2021 12:20

@JanFebAnyMonth

But *@Firefliess*, those %rates are all for wild or possibly Kent variant, we don’t yet know whether the Indian (or future) variants will change any of them.
You're right and it's definitely something to keep a watch on. But if the vaccines work fine but it's 50% more contagious that's then a 0.5% chance of a vaccinated contact catching it and being contagious, which is still a very low chance
UserEleventyNine · 20/05/2021 12:29

I don't agree that children can be asked to keep testing twice per week indefinitely with no symptoms, unless the tests are made less invasive.

I've read about trials of 'spit tests' where saliva is tested, but I suppose they haven't been able to, or haven't yet been able to, produce one that's good enough to put into use. It would make testing of children much easier if they could.

Am not sure we’ve looked to the black fungus infection spreading in India in the wake of Covid yet?

Oh phew - I thought you were still trying to book today. Glad that you got there in the end.

amicissimma · 20/05/2021 14:13

@brondary

Just went on the national vaccination website to see if you can now book vaccines in my area. I am number 305 in the queue.
To put a more optimistic spin on this, the centre I was volunteering at this week did over 900 vaccinations in one day. And there is a much bigger centre a few miles away.
brondary · 20/05/2021 14:21

@amicissimma that is great. But my point really is how much things vary by area. The next city to me 35 miles away is doing brilliant and some people travel from the city I live to there, as it is the only way they can get vaccinated.
It is a postcode lottery. So all the talk about people being offered the chance to book a jab exaggerates its success.
If you live in one of the areas that is vaccinating lots of people very fast, you are lucky.

fichemoilapaix · 20/05/2021 15:02

Only in primary are whole classes sent home really

Unfortunately they have gone back to sending home whole yeargroups in secondary schools where I live.

Not great for those in exam years, especially since the curriculum for year 10s and 12s has apparently not been modified at all to reflect the massive disruption to their first year of GCSEs and A levels.

Still live in fear of the emails from school. Thought it was just close contacts, but no, backwards steps now with the Indian variant and it is whole year groups again.

sirfredfredgeorge · 20/05/2021 15:06

Unfortunately they have gone back to sending home whole yeargroups in secondary schools where I live

And schools here are not even doing the advice right - child in school Friday, kid tests positive on Tuesday, school decides the 10 day isolation starts on Tuesday. So whole class out for days extra than required because track & trace delegated to schools, but schools are incompetent and no way to complain.

And obviously, like with any measure, once you don't trust them, people don't bother.

MarshaBradyo · 20/05/2021 15:08

That’s really tough re secondary esp exam year.

We have last exam tomorrow then one week normal school left, think we’ll make it. Can’t believe it!

ZNation · 20/05/2021 15:10

Yes the Bolton numbers are bad but in winter the most of greater Manchester was worse than that for months wasn't it?
I'm in Tameside and I'm sure we had rates of 750 and kids were in school.
Not saying it isn't scary at all but I'm sure it was worse for figures back in October

Piggywaspushed · 20/05/2021 15:18

Schools take advice from PHE/ LAs to be fair.

Calling us incompetent is a bit harsh fred! No teacher trained to be a public health decision maker. I think the blame should lie entirely on those who delegated major decisions to schools about isolations, including during the holidays.

Whole year groups going home in secondary would suggest a lot of cases and strong advice from Public Health, We did this before Easter when we had 15 in year 12.

sirfredfredgeorge · 20/05/2021 15:26

Piggywaspushed In the case I'm talking about no advice from PHE / LA was taken, and yes it's incompetent if you can't count 10 days from last contact with a possibly infectious individual, starting the count from a Tuesday when no-one could've been in contact with the individual since the Friday is incompetent, I can't see any other appropriate words.

But yes, often such incompetence would come from the local authority too.

sirfredfredgeorge · 20/05/2021 15:28

And generally this is one of the problems, people assume that the sensible precautions they see in their environment, not sending whole year groups home, good advice from PHE which balance competing harms etc. and assume they are the norm so therefore support other actions which are completely different based on the whims of individuals.

brondary · 20/05/2021 15:39

I thought it was the government advice to measure it that way? I know it does not make sense. But if I was a Head I would be following what the government told me to do.
AlecTrevelyan006 · 20/05/2021 15:44

Death rate in England lowest since records began

Just 851.2 people per 100,000 died last month, the lowest figure since the ONS started recording mortality rates in 2001

I took a few screenshots at the time - here’s end of October for all the GM boroughs

@ceeveebee
bloody hell I'd forgotten it was that bad!!!

MargaretThursday · 20/05/2021 16:01

At the worst point places got up to over 1k/100k, our area, despite being low for most of the time shot up to over 900/100k and we weren't even in the top 50.

So looking at Bolton, I have different thoughts. If that's it, and now it starts going down and other areas don't increase, it's a blip. We need to look out for them and act to stop them spreading.
But if it continues rising, and starts spreading to other areas with similar rises, then it is going to be a big issue.

However, with vaccination, I'm hopeful that it won't.

MRex · 20/05/2021 16:06

180 LFD removed today
Finally first doses increasing at 264,858, Second doses 369,018.
2874 cases is a worry even though much will be surge test increases.
7 deaths.
