Anyone else think MN is getting back to normal and the vast majority seem to have recovered their sense of humor and those that haven't are back to being annoyed about their neighbour's dogs and parking? That's my good news for the day.

Expecting side effects of the vaccines from information gathered across Europe

Of course it isn't very accurate because it misses out that only around 1 in 4 get any side effects at all.

Plus the main ones people get are a sore arm and a headache for a few hours

Dementedswan · 06/05/2021 12:38

Dh will be in todays 2nd jab numbers, I'll be in next Wednesdays Grin his was 11 weeks apart (pfizer) mine 9 weeks (AZ)

TruelyWonder · 06/05/2021 13:22

A study published in the BMJ found that people who have had an AstraZeneca vaccine dose are at slightly more risk of a vein blood clot compared to the general population.

Researchers looked at 280,000 people aged 18-65 who received a first dose of the AZ jab in Denmark and Norway.

AZ just over one case of CVST per 50,000 was found.

By comparison, the odds of dying during a game of football are 1.1 per 50,000 people according to a separate study in 2019 by Oxford University.

Playing it or watching it?

If watching I find there's a very good chance of dying of boredom Grin

Oh bloody hell, been chatting to a friend, just found out another friend is currently in hospital with clots on the brain 7 days after her first dose of az. Age 49. Having a wobble now . Someone give me a slap and tell me I'll be fine after my 2nd dose Shock

Clarexbp · 06/05/2021 14:59

@Dementedswan, I just read this on the Huff Post website:

"The risk of developing a blood clot with your second dose of the vaccine is even more rare. Up to 5 April, the MHRA had heard of 100 cases of blood clots with low platelet counts in the UK following vaccination with the AstraZeneca jab.

Of these, 99 reports were associated with the first dose of the vaccine and a single report followed a second dose, although this individual had medical conditions that could have caused the events. For context, this is out of 20.6 million first doses and one million second doses of the vaccine issued in total."

So, twenty times as many first doses have been given, but 99 times as many clots for first doses. Looks like if you got through the first dose OK, you should be fine with the second.

That's put my mind at rest somewhat!

TheChineseChicken · 06/05/2021 15:06

Oh gawd, trying not to panic about brain clots

PomLikeTheBattle · 06/05/2021 15:10

DH feels bit achey post 1st dose otherwise ok.

Sorry about blood clot worries and wish I had words of wisdom. Hard to get risks in perspective but it is vv low, lower than your risk dying with covid (I think I've worked the percentages out right).

I am so night out ready, purchased new red lipstick.

I'm trying to remember that it seems worse than it is because we're vaccinating so many people in a short space of time. As someone pointed out in another thread, if the clots had occurred over e.g. 5 or 10 years of vaccine use it wouldn't seem so bad. And I've never worried about small risks happening to me before so why now?
Dementedswan · 06/05/2021 15:24

Very true! I shall apply your logic to myself, pour a stiff drink and carry on.

TruelyWonder · 06/05/2021 15:25

That is exactly it chicken. We are vaccinating the entire population at once. Obviously normally childhood vaccinations (which also have some risk) are done a small percentage of the population each year. So any occurrence is put down as a minor risk. Which it is accurately.

No other vaccination program has ever been so watch and analysed in such detail as this one. Of course that is a good thing in a lot of ways. However it also takes everything completely out of prospective.

Germany is actually now considering using AZ in all age groups again. To help stop any vaccine hesitancy about it (Of there own making) they will let anyone that wants AZ have is straight away. Those that don't can wait for an alternative. If the vaccine was considered unsafe they wouldn't even think about doing this.

I probably wouldn't. Apparently there has been a 20% increase in alcohol related deaths during the pandemic. More than 7000 people have died in a year.

Puts the clotting issue into some sort of protective I guess

Dementedswan · 06/05/2021 15:32

🤣🤣🤣 umm yeah! I'll chance it.

Cheers Wine I know I'll worry for a few weeks after the jab, dh is on strict instructions to be ready to whizz me to hospital if I get any symptoms. Since they are not mixing vaccines i will have to take my chance with the second jab in 6 days.

TruelyWonder · 06/05/2021 16:01

I think it is perfectly normal for people to worry. Natural human instincts and all that.

Just like to give some prospective to those worries WineGrin

TruelyWonder · 06/05/2021 16:05

A lot of people sound like they are waiting to hear from Professor Snape

Bet they never thought their second jab would be at the hands of the Hogwarts potion master

😜

NightmareLoon · 06/05/2021 16:13

As someone who had a prolonged weird headache following my first vaccination, I have to say they were VERY quick to send me to A&E for a blood test, even though I didn't necessarily have any of the classic symptoms, and A&E took it seriously - did a blood test + a stroke assessment.

They tested my platelets and also a full normal blood test. (Normal platelets, somewhat anaemic.)

Dementedswan · 06/05/2021 16:18

I'm on meds for anxiety and depression anyway, tend to stay away from the doom and gloom boards so thought I'd ask for a kick up the arse here. Especially after it's happened to someone we know and their prognosis is bad.

The news about the clots just came out the day after my first vaccination.
