Yep, feeling it today. Weather is shit, kids aren't sleeping so I'm permanently tired and look like crap, covid doom etc. etc.

Thanks for that Twitter link. Sounds promising.

And @TeenMinusTests glad to hear your personal good news :-)

springhasalmostsprung · 14/05/2021 10:51

@TeenMinusTests that's lovely news

PomRuns · 14/05/2021 12:59

BBC News reporting only 1 in 1400 people have covid, plus positive to move forward 2nd doses.

And Portugal to allow holiday makers for the UK.

There is a lot of negativity around at the moment but lots of the predictions which were quite forcefully made on here earlier this year have not happened. It just a shame that the loud voices don't admit they were wrong.

@PomLikeTheBattle

Very good news re ONS figures (I assume) that's great

Good news also re Portugal.

I am in a very good mood as managed to get to hairdressers for 1st time in over year this week.

Still a bit puzzled re the apology thing???? Who was meant to apologise for what dya think?

TheChineseChicken · 14/05/2021 13:12

What’s the apology thing?

PomRuns · 14/05/2021 13:13

No need to be puzzled, when people cause needless anxiety, that's just wrong.

PomRuns · 14/05/2021 13:40

What’s the apology thing?
No idea !
amicissimma · 14/05/2021 15:32

@Bordois

Prediction of third wave over summer revised.

Will that deter the doomploppers or will they move on to something else?

And 9 posts later ...

Just checking in again. Another who needs the good news. Really hope that over the next couple of weeks they (scientist's, gov etc) find that vaccines work for this variant well and we are worrying about nothing.

Can't do this for much longer.

Gigitree · 15/05/2021 08:15

How are we all feeling about this new Indian variant? Somebody told me it’s effecting children more so than other variants, which scares me. But I haven’t actually see anywhere say this so don’t know if it’s true or not.

OrangeBananaFish · 15/05/2021 08:29

How are we all feeling about this new Indian variant?

Fucked off to be honest. Either it is something of concern and back into lockdown we go or an overreaction is occurring. Both situations are nothing to be happy about. In fact I'm spiralling again.

Well all the doom sayers can now congratulate themselves. They were right and we were wrong. So well done them 👏👏👏

PomRuns · 15/05/2021 08:34

I don’t think enough is known - bit early for people to congratulate themselves - although see lots are ...
I keep reminding myself the vaccines so far have been effective against the previous variants and we’re in a much better position with numbers vaccinated.
We need to hold steady for next 2-3 weeks.
Plus for mental health avoid all doom !

TeenMinusTests · 15/05/2021 08:36

A new variant is not a surprise, they were always going to pop up until the whole world is vaccinated.

But this time around we understand the science and how the virus is spread much better. We understand how to treat serious cases much better. And most importantly we have our vaccination programme.

OrangeBananaFish · 15/05/2021 08:42

That's why I'm on this thread. My sanity needs it.

Funny thing is, on paper lockdown should be great for me, but for some reason I just want to get back to normal

springhasalmostsprung · 15/05/2021 08:42

To be honest I don't really understand why they haven't delayed the indoor dining/household mixing etc by 2/3 weeks so we have more info on the variant vs vaccines.... maybe because the know the social rules won't be followed if they change them this close to the date

Welikebeingcosy · 15/05/2021 08:57

I think is a political thing, they don't want to upset all the business owners who are depending on reopening next week. I do hope they delay a bit though, I mean what's a few weeks after all we've done so far, and at least it would mean we haven't done all the lockdowns for nothing, and loads more people will be vaccinated in a few weeks!

Thewiseoneincognito · 15/05/2021 09:29

Absolutely. Yet even knowing more about how this virus works and the potential issues this variant could bring we are still reopening on Monday!? It beggars belief doesn’t it.
PomRuns · 15/05/2021 09:32

I do think people need to take personal responsibility though. So if you haven’t been vaccinated/ are cev etc - maybe choose to remain cautious. Can’t expect the government provide guidance to that individual detail.

PomRuns · 15/05/2021 09:34

Well criticised if they do or don’t. Not a Tory before I’m accused of being right wing.

TeenMinusTests · 15/05/2021 09:38

(I don't want to be the thread police, but please can we try to keep this thread positive? It is my one 'safe' space on CV. I don't want to hear about how the strategy is wrong when I can't control it. I come here for the good news bits.)

PomRuns · 15/05/2021 09:47

@TeenMinusTests yes- sorry if I wavered !

1990s · 15/05/2021 10:00

@PomRuns

I don't disagree at all, but those people are largely younger people, who know they're less at risk and have spent so much time in restricted lives to protect others who are now protected. Sad

It's a hard sell to tell them to continue being cautious.

My good news element is that the vaccines are effective on this variant to some level. So we will not be affected as badly as India. That is good news to me. And I really hope India can get their vaccine programme going!

PomRuns · 15/05/2021 10:08

I do agree the young have sacrificed a lot.

Need to try and keep the variant update in proportion. Absolutely right we remain cautious but equally may not be the disaster some are predicting.

lazymum99 · 15/05/2021 10:16

The other good news I have just read is that they ‘think’ that the variant is spreading more because of sociological reasons. They have found that travellers returning from India caused a higher spread than others in the community. This, they believe, is due to multi generational homes (crowded) and type of work.
I probably haven’t explained it that well. But if this is the case then viriologically it is not that much more transmissible.

amicissimma · 15/05/2021 10:42

From reports coming out of India eg it looks as though the AZ vaccine, which is the one mostly used there under a different name, is protecting against severe disease and death from the Indian variant.

"There are a number of reports from India saying that although there’s infection in people who’ve been vaccinated, there is protection against severe disease,” said Ravi Gupta, the senior author of the paper and a professor of clinical microbiology at the University of Cambridge. “So on an individual level, vaccination is still fantastic and works. But in terms of controlling transmission, there may be a degree of compromise.”
