How long before the UK become India

Dandylioness1 · 24/04/2021 00:47

The scenes coming from India right now are petrifying.

Takes me back to the scenes from Italy last year.

My question, how long do you think we have until we are seeing similar scenes here.
Do we need to be prepared for this?
@Dandylioness1 That’s not what you said in your original thread. Maybe if the title to your thread was “when do you think the Indian variant will affect us” you would have got a more sensible answer. But instead you wanted to be a full on drama queen.
Does anyone have up to date info on what some of the poorer African countries are like?

You could check out Worldometer for each country, to find the number of cases, deaths, what direction it's all going in, etc.

It's perhaps not the best of sites, but at least it uses basic facts and doesn't feature fake claims and pictures

UmbilicusProfundus · 24/04/2021 19:40

Maybe they just unintentionally expressed themselves badly. Twice.

Quartz2208 · 24/04/2021 19:41

Dandylionness1 that is exactly what you said.

The thing is though the most transmissible and the variant that has actually been more deadly so far is the Kent variant which we have already had.

The only positive is that vaccines work against it - that is the difference and the worry of the other variants coming to us - how effective the vaccines are. But they are not more transmissible or more deadly that the variant we have already had a lockdown for.

OP clearly has the IQ of a cucumber.

How extremely derogatory of you.

I don’t think my “have you been living under a rock” comment is rude but rather factual.

Surely all the op needs to do is to read the news regularly rather than starting goady alarmist threads dressed up as fake concern

(that start a bunfight before the poster fucks off into the sunset)
@Allmyarseandpeggymartin

Except that I haven’t been living under a rock!

@KatChocolate

I can’t believe how some posters are responding to the OP!

Would you call someone a twat or told them they must have a low IQ, if they were talking to you in RL about their concerns?

There are ways to answer questions without being downright rude!

@KatChocolate

Thanks! My thoughts exactly.

It’s completely unnecessary, not to mention rude!!

@UmbilicusProfundus

People are always going to be critical of an OP who writes an (accidentally or not) inflammatory post, doesn’t reflect on any of the responses in their second post, and then disappears. Of course people are concerned or seeking reassurance, so why don’t you come back OP and tell us your thoughts now.
@UmbilicusProfundus

Oh, sorry I don’t spend all day on a forum to instantly send replies. Confused

It’s been pretty decent weather today. I’ve been at the beer garden, drinking Prosecco! Out from under my rock, doing what people with IQ’s of a cucumber generally tend to do....

@Bluntness100

Why is it that on this board, if anyone dares to express their worries / concerns, and if they seems to go against the grain of others, then they are automatically assumed to have “anxiety” or “mental health” issues.

Other common accusations -
Goady
A troll
Doomonger
scaremongering

It’s pretty laughable how all the responses (not just on my post) are so generic and completely predictable.
it’s not a discussion, or a debate, it just turns in to a sickening form of bullying / belittling.

Shame on you all.

Againstmachine · 24/04/2021 21:31

OP is back getting upset she's been called out on her scaremongering.

And still can't see India and UK don't compare.

OppsUpsSide · 24/04/2021 21:31

Ach I don't know how anyone can watch it and think “sad, but of course it won’t happen to us”.
Unlikely (hopefully) but you can’t be 100% certain. Nothing wrong with asking questions.

oh dear....naughty step for those pointing out your post was over the top and ridiculous given the facts that are easily available online. Are you a teacher?

OppsUpsSide · 24/04/2021 21:41

Confused

Op, read your op again, just take a breath and red what you actually wrote. Then understand why people have reacted as they have,

Your statement infers you feel we will see the same thing, you do not ask will we, you ask how long until we do. You then ask if we need to prepare for it. The statement , even your title, states you were of the mind set that it was going to be the same here, clearly it’s not, hence the responses.

Tealightsandd · 24/04/2021 21:45

@LizzieMacQueen

Have not RTFT but I'm worried about similar scenes across the whole of the African continent.

Does anyone have up to date info on what some of the poorer African countries are like? I appreciate I could google but thought I'd ask here.

Much of Africa put in place strict measures - the key being border restrictions. Lots of emphasis on mask wearing too. A result their numbers are thankfully low. Fingers crossed they stay that way.

Well there is “calling out” (awful phrase) and being rude and insulting. I disagree with OP but I don’t feel the need to call her names
UmbilicusProfundus · 24/04/2021 22:05

Exactly Bluntness

beginningoftheend · 24/04/2021 22:13

I agree with you on this OP.

I really don't agree with you about India/UK and said so upthread but I think the level of bullying is horrible.

It comes because people are struggling themselves in some way, so they have to shout down people with either different views or worries they don't want to even consider.

beginningoftheend · 24/04/2021 22:14

Sorry, I meant to quote - it was the comment the OP made about bullying I agree with - not the oribginal post about India.

Thank you. And that’s okay that you don’t agree with my post.
We’re all here for a discussion and i wouldn’t expect every one to have the same opinion as I do.

I’m happy to have a debate / discussion.

Kindness costs nothing and regardless of how much someone doesn’t agree with my post, it still doesn’t justify name calling.

MushMonster · 24/04/2021 23:05

This one is heated!Shock
I really really think (and hope-pray), that the vaccination campaign will save us from this, and that we need to keep up with it till we are all vaccinated. Both UK and abroad, which is going to take a while.
Re-incidence seems to be very low, and much weaker if it happens, so we have good reasons to be optimistic.

In Africa every country is a different story at the moment; there isn't as much testing as here, so you can only rely on news reports to know how things are rather than looking at numbers. The South Africans seem to have cases back under control but their variant is still problematic for neighbouring countries.

Fairly early into the epidemic last year Tanzania president John Magufuli banned anyone, including doctors, from talking about covid and said traditional remedies plus prayer were best. He decided not to sign up to covax for vaccines. So you won't see many cases for Tanzania. Then president John Magufuli died of covid on 17th March. There's a new variant now discovered from Tanzania, unclear what this one's like.

Further north Chad's president Idriss Deby died recently too, but he was killed by Islamist militants. Nigeria and Cameroon have been having big issues with the militants too. Congo and Guinea had ebola outbreaks recently. So they have other things to worry about not just covid.

osbertthesyrianhamster · 24/04/2021 23:38

God, some people really are going to be sad when this is over, aren't they?

Yes, they are!

RedcurrantPuff · 24/04/2021 23:41

I saw a quote earlier from a scientist who said that thanks to the measures we’ve had and the vaccines we will not see scenes like those in India here.

Seriously OP, get a grip.
