How long before the UK become India

The scenes coming from India right now are petrifying.

Takes me back to the scenes from Italy last year.

My question, how long do you think we have until we are seeing similar scenes here.
Do we need to be prepared for this?

Oh for goodness sake. Why on Earth would we be anything like India? Honestly, some people just seem to want something to worry about.

2X4B523P · 24/04/2021 00:54

With the success of our vaccination program I doubt it very much.

We have to live our lives but we also have to maintain a healthy caution in order to prevent these things developing. One of the criticisms many make of the government is that they did not show enough concern early on in the pandemic. The number of cases of the Indian variant here are low but last week were 70% higher than the week before and some cases were in people who have not been in India so it is foolish to dismiss concern out of hand. Having said that we have a good proportion of the population vaccinated which should help so I don't think we need to panic yet (or at least I hope not!)
GrumpyHoonMain · 24/04/2021 01:08

India has fewer deaths and hospital admissions per 1m population than the UK, even now. What you’re seeing now isn’t some superstrength Indian varient killing everyone, you’re seeing what happens when even a tiny fraction of a 1bn population begins to need urgent hospital care from a 2-tier healthcare system that has consistantly been under-invested.

India probably has more hospitals than any other country on earth but that’s about it. Most of them don’t have ICU capability, you still need to work hard to source and buy your own meds because qualified dispensing pharmacists are few and far between, and there is a 2-tier medical qualification (5 year vs 3/4 year) system so all the best grads go to private hospitals. So of course that’s where anyone who has money will choose to go, overwhelming them.

OnTheBrink1 · 24/04/2021 01:09

Look at the pictures from India. I mean really look. The poor souls there are having a horrific time but it’s a very very different living situation here in the UK. Apples and oranges.

EmeraldShamrock · 24/04/2021 01:10

I think the UK's vaccinations are very impressive, try not to worry I think the UK has beaten it.
I'm bracing myself for another wave in Ireland the vaccine program isn't great.

quarentini · 24/04/2021 01:12

We are endemic not pandemic at the moment in England.
What is happening in India is truly awful but it can't be compared to us.
We have a good vaccine program and that plus other measures have worked.

GrumpyHoonMain · 24/04/2021 01:13

And then there’s the vaccination programme which India messed up. They focussed on the elderly but in reality, in India, not only aren’t they always the highest risk for covid due to the way Indian society works; but they rely on younger family members for their income and would be in a worse state if younger family members died . They should have focussed their efforts on people with comordinities aged 25-60 first but I understood why they didn’t. It’s one of the few countries with more people under 30 than over 50.

ineedaholidaynow · 24/04/2021 01:28

I’m assuming though we are not seeing the true extent of the number of people with COVID in India. Aren’t some people saying the numbers are actually ten times the ones being reported.

But hopefully if we are vigilant we can suppress the spread of the Indian variant, and so not have the same problem here.

They probably are but still around what would usually happen at this time of year. A lot of people die of very preventable causes in India - in some areas Lockdown and covid practices has even reduced deaths in other quarters (eg of infants) due to improved hygiene practices. In other areas it’s deciminated communities by literally starving people to death.
clementin · 24/04/2021 01:43

It definitely makes you appreciate how lucky we are in UK. And respect what we take for granted. Must be so scary for them at the moment 😭

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 24/04/2021 01:56

Honestly op have you been living under a rock India has only vaccinated a tiny percentage of its people, we’ve vaccinated over half of our population

RoseRedRoseBlue · 24/04/2021 02:04

OP, stop. Just stop. You need to gain perspective on this.

savethegrannies · 24/04/2021 02:24

I propose a hard lockdown from Monday. And none of this lockdown lite nonsense either. We need a proper lockdown like they had in China. With tanks on the street and stuff.

daisychain01 · 24/04/2021 03:22

That's right OP drum up a nice bit of hysteria. Why do it, just because you can? Are you bored, starting such an irresponsible thread?

Don't forget tasers and machine guns for the dissenters.
Torvean · 24/04/2021 03:30

We are incredibly fortunate to know we will never be in the situation India is in 325 000 new cases in one day, possibly running out of oxygen. Planning mass pyres for all the deaths expected.

For those who care to help countries needing vaccines look up Covax.

Codswallop20 · 24/04/2021 03:34

As a nurse, a respiratory specialist nurse, don't panic.

We will be ok here and I very much doubt we will see another lockdown.

The vaccine can be tweaked if necessary. Breathe, relax and enjoy your life.

HarebrightCedarmoon · 24/04/2021 03:41

Never. We will all be vaccinated soon. HTH.

RickiTarr · 24/04/2021 04:44

Think about the economic, demographic, logistical factors that separate us from India.

What India’s plight shows is is we should make sure the entire globe get the vaccines, ventilators & medicines that they need.

The U.K. is nothing like India. I the country wasn’t put into lockdown and they thought they had beat it just a few weeks ago, political rally’s and religious celebrations have all gone ahead in recent weeks/months. But it’s obviously going to spread in a country with such a big population. Japan is now also having a surge

We have been in restrictions for over a year of some sort, for example in the north we’ve had no meetings in gardens or outside our bubble in restaurants etc since July/August last year until March! We had tier 3 type restrictions or lockdown.

We weren’t as bad as India but there was a time when U.K. hospitals were running out of oxygen too.... we were in the trust I work in.

I’m not worried, vaccines are doing their job, lockdown has also help reduced cases much lower. We won’t get zero covid but it will be manageable. We do now need to get out and live again.

Spinningaround21 · 24/04/2021 05:22

@RickiTarr I agree. I’m not sure how international travel etc can resume safely until vaccines reach all nations.

MonsterMash2210 · 24/04/2021 05:56

From what I understand if we hadn’t of lockdown back in January then what is happening in India would have happened here.

We locked down just as the NHS started to buckle.

I don’t think India has still properly lockdown (I maybe wrong?).

I do know that they have recently hosted several events with large crowds whilst only vaccinating a very small percentage of their population.

What is happening in India is heartbreaking, but at the moment we are in a very good position, and there are many reasons why we should be optimistic. Cautious yes, but optimistic.
