Its the pictures coming out of india, with the recent festival and hundreds of people crammed together, during a second covid wave. This virus will just mutate forever, its too global to contain. Its just never going away. What the hells going to happen to us or our kids futures?
I can't see a way out of this. Science can't catch up, its too far spread to ever get a handle on it.

Irma :
Early warning certainly failed.
WHO policy on keeping travel open always did seem focussed on the idea of keeping aid workers and medicines moving, like they didn't appreciate mass travel would have an effect? Very odd.

lightand · 21/04/2021 17:38

@poppycat10 Where are you all still queueing?

Where I live, shops are small, so the answer is, out on the street!
Makes the small town look busier than it is, because people are queueing outside, all over the place!
Pet shop, local bakeries, banks, toilets, you name it!

Lassy1945 · 21/04/2021 17:48

Any queues for shops now are simply because of the understandably excitement that they’re all open again!

It’s a positive, a real positive!!

SamW98 · 21/04/2021 17:56

We went to lunch by the coast yesterday and there was queue outside the pub by 1pm waiting for a table

I think that's really positive that in the middle of the day on a Tuesday that people want to get out for lunch and to start enjoying life again

ssd · 21/04/2021 18:43

I went out today and met 2 pals for takeaway coffee. One was saying how she has a table booked for next week when we start opening up again here. It made me feel more positive. Also reading the helpful posts here about the virus mutations and vaccines. Definitely the sunshine helps today too.

That's cheered me right up OP! I kept coming back to this thread as it troubled me that you were in a bad place. To just have a good day is no small thing. I am really pleased!! Flowers

I sat outside in a friend's garden this morning it was ten degrees here and grey cloud. Sad Still nice to see her though.

I think once we can dine indoors (not sure when that is for England I think it's soon for Scotland) and go into people's houses it will start to feel different and better.

ssd · 21/04/2021 19:59

@SummerHouse thanks!
Today definitely felt better. I'm getting counselling for my anxiety, but this part of Scotland feels like its been groundhog forever. The constant news doesn't help either.
But i enjoyed today.

I don't agree. It's not the plague. It will become a 'norm' in the not too distant future. There are many other issues in India which are a factor.

Dolciedolly · 21/04/2021 21:29

@katfold

The pandemic will end, but I think peoppe are beginning to cotton on now to the fact that the pre covid world is gone.. we live in a covid world now, and social distancing, masks etc are here to stay.

At the moment this is hard to accept but I think over time we will all come to embrace this new, healthier way of life! Staying apart, sticking to your household, staying at home.. will all become second nature. And that is great! Instead of holidays and restaurants we will enjoy jigsaws and cooking at home. Instead of socialising, we will focus on our own household! Single people will learn to be happier on their own, and take a long time to get to know someone to have children with...which is great! Instead of chatting to each other, we will keep our distance and all mind our own business.

In time we will learn to love the new healthier happier quieter way of life!

You are being sarcastic right ?

Is it really, I spoke to a friend who lost her Dp at age 50 a few weeks ago
RedcurrantPuff · 21/04/2021 23:43

Awful as that is for your poor friend @littlebillie that doesn’t prove or disprove anything about the survival rate

TownTalkJewels · 22/04/2021 00:03

@IrmaFayLear

I think what bothers me is international movement.

Post 1918 and the spread of the flu, populations settled down and were fairly static. Of course there were travellers, but absolutely nothing like the scale of today.

The Ebola outbreak a couple of years ago was quickly contained because the people in the affected areas were not minded to travel and in fact it was aid workers who might have been the weak link.

International travel seeded the coronavirus pandemic around the globe (tautology?!) and unchecked travel will do the same with variants and other previously unencountered diseases.

So in the 1920s we had naturally closed borders, but post 2020 we need, if not closed borders, then virus-policed ones.

Mandatory health screenings for anyone entering the country, checking for any disease, forever?

Gosh, this pandemic has really brought out the 1984 in people.

Ps... ‘not minded’ to travel? I think you might have misunderstood what life is like in Liberia

The survival rate being high depends on hospital treatment being available! If too many people get ill at once, that's then not available. It's never been something we could just have ignored.

No, it doesn't, Redcurrant, but it think the point was more that MrsHastings' post was rather callous.

Last I saw covid has a 20% hospitalisation rate. Are we just ignoring that? A decent percentage of those wouldn’t survive covid without hospital resources. It doesn’t even really matter if it’s covid or appendicitis or gastric ulcers or RTA’s - 20% of the population requiring hospital attention in a short period of time is catastrophic.

Fortunately there are people that will continue to ‘pay attention to this shit’ to make sure that people like you have the luxury of not having to.

Ah ok, fair point.

The problem with Covid is the numbers really, if it had a natural R rate of less than 1 the government wouldn’t have given a shiny shite about it.

desperateandsad · 22/04/2021 11:40

Covid does NOT have a 20% hospitalisation rate. 1 in 5 OVER 80’s are admitted to hospital with covid, not 1 in 5 of the general population who get it. The vast majority don’t even know they have it and have to have an unreliable test to diagnose them. It has already been proven that asymptomatic carriers can’t pass it on - the government and the media don’t want you to know this. Rather than believing everything you read in the media, look at and analyse statistics, look for the science. Have lockdowns had an impact? According to the actual science and statistics, nope. Do SD and masks work? Again, nope. This is scientifically proven.

TheOneWithTheBigNose · 22/04/2021 11:43

Where did you see that? Because it categorically isn’t true.

Iirc it was from a report (admittedly some time ago) based on figures from the CDC. I’ll see if I can find the link (I’ve only got a screen shot to hand after checking).

Happy to be updated with new figures.

My town centre has been really busy this week, all clothes shops and non-essential shops open, tables and chairs outside all the cafes and restaurants packed with people, pubs outside spaces full, really uplifting to see
