Social distancing and queueing in shops

Blossomplease6 · 10/04/2021 21:02

When will it end? June? I have a child with SEN and all the queueing to get in everywhere and dancing around people In shops and staying behind lines is making it impossible to take him out.

The point of this really was to just try and find out if all the queuing and social distancing would be dropped in June, as that was my understanding.
Not to discuss the reasons for it.“

Wouldn’t think so because the adult population won’t be vaccinated until the end of July.

With a youngest child of 18 with asthma, but not severe enough to qualify for early vaccine, I hope not . He’s given up a formative year of his life to protect older, CEV relatives, returning to College for the first time tomorrow.
For him and the many thousands like him who have lost so much but not generally complained, I would hope that people are prepared to pay them back now by maintaining social distancing and mask wearing until they are vaccinated too. Taking the twice weekly LF tests too, please.

It’s not a lot to ask.

I have no concern about young children dancing about and being young children. They are very low risk, which anyone keeping up with developments will know.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 11/04/2021 20:03

@Chickenriceandpeas

Those of you who think social distancing will go beyond June, what happens with stuff like festivals and nightclubs that are all assuming they can go ahead from then (festivals selling tickets etc)? Will they all get cancelled/have to remain closed? Cos there’s no way in hell you can social distance at either! Imagine going to a club all staying 2m apart - it just can’t work!
I can’t see it happening tbh unless the vaccine rollout dramatically increases and every adult is offered two doses by then but can’t see that happening as it’s too tight time wise not to mention the supplies needed.
DenisetheMenace · 11/04/2021 20:06

WOMAD has a WOMAT for anyone who wants one. Brilliant!

AmelieTaylor · 11/04/2021 20:27

But why does your child need to go in the shops? Surely there are more interesting things to do?

I thought it was clear from my posts he doesn’t like going to shops so obviously I’m not taking him for a day out or an interesting thing to do 😂
What a bizarre comment[/quote]

Because YOU made it sound like 'a trip out' not shopping for essentials (by essentials I mean thing YOU think are needed, not anyone else).

I have no problem with kids going into shops, none at all & I pass no judgement in them being there. No matter their age etc. Or how many a parent has taken.

Trust me I know how difficult it is with children with SN.

But people thinking SD needs to end, as things are opening up, are wanting to have their cake & to eat it. We cannot have both.

Shop staff need protecting as much as we are able and crowding in shops puts them at risk.

Blossomplease6 · 11/04/2021 20:59

@AmelieTaylor I just re-read my posts. I didn’t make it sound like a trip out.

I work in a nursery, no protection. We just get on with it, we don’t live in fear. This can not just go on forever. We need to live with it, most shop workers are not going to die of covid because people didn’t queue to get in the shop.

Fembot123 · 11/04/2021 21:01

No she didn’t @AmelieTaylor, you just read it wrong, makes more sense to own that rather than tell someone else what they meant 🙄

Bluebird2021 · 11/04/2021 21:21

you work in a nursery...so the same few kids and carers day In day out...you dont get a constant stream of members of the public through your doors do you? thrusting phones in your face saying 'have you got this'...cant hear them? they pull their masks down and bellow at you...abuse and aggravation as well as touching everything, insisting items should be carried out for them and lifted into their vehicle ...you have none of that. you have the same people who know you

hence the difference in job...you can't say its fine, all measures should be lifted because you work in some nursery. just not the same.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 11/04/2021 21:21

I'd be more than happy for people to be more mindful of personal space moving forwards. I've never liked people breathing down my neck in queues.

^^
I really agree with this. The only good thing about the pandemic for me has been people keeping out of your space!

DispensingShitAdviceSince2002 · 11/04/2021 21:23

@Chickenriceandpeas

It should end now. There are 6 people in my county with it at the moment -6! Why the fuck are we still queueing up like idiots in the freezing cold? Has anyone looked at the numbers recently?! They’re TINY. If it’s not June I’m going to proper lose it, like Michael Douglas in Falling Down.
This.
Blossomplease6 · 11/04/2021 21:31

@Bluebird2021 no but they literally spit and cough droplets on my face multiple times a week Grin
It’s not a competition but I can guarantee you more people invade my personal space and share bodily fluids and germs with me than they would if I worked in a supermarket. We also don’t have masks or any mitigating measures really. But we don’t expect to socially distance from our kids until covid is gone (never)

Have you had covid @Bluebird2021 because I feel like you’re being slightly dramatic? Don’t get me wrong, this time last year I’d have been terrified to work in a supermarket, as I was about my job. But now, knowing what we know, not so much.

OP posts:
Buzzinwithbez · 11/04/2021 21:33

@KurtWilde

It's a pretty sad state of affairs but I know a lot of kids who are actually thrilled at the prospect of a quick wander round Asda now. There's a sense of normalcy to it and let's face it in this weather it's far more enjoyable than walking round the park!

No one should have to defend their reasons for taking their kids shopping ffs.

Has yes! My feral child who skips and knocks elderly curmudgeons flying like skittles can get very excited about a trip around ... I'm going to say it.....The Range
KurtWilde · 11/04/2021 21:41

@Buzzinwithbez We love The Range (plus my DSis works there so we pop in when we know she's on her shift that way we can give her a social distanced wave and hi), also B&M, Wilkos, Home Bargains, and a good old Poundland. I've kept things as normal as possible for my DC (shopping wise!!) and it's done them the world of good. They're not afraid of covid jumping out at them round every corner. We all had it, picked it up during a visit to the GP with toddler.

i have no idea about supermarkets, id not work in one and never have!!

dramatic? hmm i'm a retail manager, responsible for employees and being covid compliant at audit.

Keepyourdistance000 · 11/04/2021 21:45

Hopefully vets will return to allowing clients in to the surgeries after June, and GPs will again routinely offer face to face appointments.

VaVaGloom · 11/04/2021 21:48

They should bin the 1 customer in the bank and shortened banking hours now - there's room for more people with plenty of distancing inside. I suspect they will never reinstate our local Sat AM banking under the guise of Covid control.Pah!

StillCounting123 · 11/04/2021 21:51

I think part of the issue for OP, and many like her is a balance of risk and reality versus what might happen. Seems like this Covid pandemic and the media attention of it has wiped many people's ability to think rationally.

I'm not speaking for OP, and she can jump in if I'm wrong!

But what I mean is, her son has SEN and she knows he will struggle with queues and waiting. So she is trying to operate her life in accordance with this for her sake, for his sake and for those around them.

Versus the risk assessment of catching Covid, the risk of which is vanishingly small, yet it seems the world has lost their heads over it.

Illness happens, death happens. Doesn't mean we should stop living though!

Skral · 11/04/2021 21:57

@KurtWilde

And if I read one more post about why should kids be in shops I'll lose my shit. If you're so fussed about kids in shops why don't YOU buy your stuff online??
I agree with this completely. Everyone who is whinging about kids and other people should follow their own advice and shop online.
Flapjak · 11/04/2021 22:01

I am sick of peering over a mask and having muffled conversations . When can we #binthemask

Mostly keeping her with me keeps my anxiety at bay. Between the masks and the constant announcements to remind us about a virus and the people who lean too close and the people who look absolutely petrified I've had numerous near panic attacks. Focusing on how normal she is gives me some normality. She's ten, so doesn't actually get in anyone's way. She has the common sense to distance without needing yellow tape and arrows pointing out to her.

Our favourite shop at the moment is one below. And we're trying to brighten our garden up so that's given us lots of reason to visit The Range, Home Bargains etc... I love B&M too but I found them claustrophobia even before covid. I think it's the layout and lack of Windows.

Quit4me · 11/04/2021 22:03

@SpnBaby1967

I still dont understand why people are so scared of a virus whereby for the vast majority will be nothing worse than a bad cold.

As with any illness some people will be worse off, some will die. My friends 4 year old almost died of chicken pox! It's sad for those families sure, but in the grand scheme of the virus it's still rare.

We've had what, 4 million cases in over 12 months. That means 62 million people havent caught it. 62 MILLION!!! I could understand the terror if it was 30 million cases and a 20% death rate but it isnt.

We've vaccinated more people than have ever caught covid.

Even taking into account those that end up with post viral syndrome is still what, 100,000 people? That's not even 1%! I had post viral syndrome after glandular fever so I know it's awful but come on, why the terror??

MSM have done a bloody good job is all I can say.

Let's get back to normality. No stupid rags over our faces, no antisocial distancing, no unnecessary queue systems. If you get covid, fine. 1-2 weeks off work for most people will sort them out. Bit like catching flu, or norovirus, or a cold etc.

Totally agree. MSM has done a fantastic job of turning on the fear in so many people. So good a job that actually it isn’t going to be turned off for many even if there were 0 cases. If you are healthy, under 60 and healthy weight the chance of being seriously ill is so low. Of course some people will suffer more and most people have some anecdotal story but this is still way out of proportion esp after the vaccines. Somehow, I don’t think some of the measures will go at all this year. Really hate to say it. Desperately want booking for everything, queues, 2 people at a time in shops etc to go
kittensarecute · 11/04/2021 22:30

Given the announcements and briefing to date I don't think restrictions regarding masks and social distancing will be over in June and I won't be surprised if they're with us until next spring at least.

No thanks.

overtheroad · 11/04/2021 22:31

Seems like this Covid pandemic and the media attention of it has wiped many people's ability to think rationally.

Reading this thread has confirmed my thoughts. The majority of you are stark raving bonkers! Take a step back and look at what is happening and what you have all resorted to - how utterly heartbreakingly sad.

FWIW - since the start of this debacle I, nor any of my family, have followed any of the ridiculous ROOLZ. Apart from any of the things (basic human rights and normal biological/societal activities) that were banned like closing hospitality etc. (any one with a brain should be querying how this is still continuing) we have just got on with it: in and out of each others houses, celebrating birthdays etc. CHRISTMAS - 14 people (shock horror)! hugging and kissing, parties etc. You know, just being basic human beings. And that's with elderly grandparents in their 80s with underlying health conditions - cancer/chemo, heart and chest problems mixing with younger people working in the NHS, teenagers at school, University etc. And guess what? NOT ONE OF US HAVE HAD COVID!- and before all the zealots jump on the bandwagon saying we've been asymptomatic and spreading it we were all tested practically every day due to hospital appointments, working in the NHS, schools etc and no-one ever had it in the whole year - so much for a deadly virus!

And look at what you have all become.

kittensarecute · 11/04/2021 22:33

@ilovesooty Don't forget all (that's ALL) covid restrictions end in June!

Bluebird2021 · 11/04/2021 22:36

will be glad to see the back of them too

but what a boost in profits its been.....full bonus this year too. financially, all of us are extremely lucky. just nowhere to spend it!

hope masks lift before summer, no fun wearing one in a hot store all day long

I didn't tell her what she meant. I told her how it came across to me.
