Social distancing and queueing in shops

When will it end? June? I have a child with SEN and all the queueing to get in everywhere and dancing around people In shops and staying behind lines is making it impossible to take him out.

You are dismissing retail staff as’paranoid’? They are not paranoid but have to follow covid precautions in place as agreed by their company with the government ... in order to be open and operating

This! I don't know why it's so hard to fathom!

camelfinger · 11/04/2021 12:07

I’m torn between wanting to support my local shops and restaurants (when possible) and getting annoyed with being told off all the time for not noticing where to stand etc and having to wait around. So part of me thinks I’ll just carry on with the online life for the next few months and hopefully attempt normality later on in the summer.

Blossomplease6 · 11/04/2021 12:14

Yeah it’s not the stores or store managers enforcing it that’s the problem. It’s the government guidelines which haven’t changed since the first lockdown to reflect the changing situation.

I had to check that this wasn’t a thread from last year . I’ve not needed to queue to go anywhere for ages except next click and collect.
I expect queues tomorrow as the non essential shops re open .
I know what you mean about queues though I’ve not took my ds to any shops throughout this pandemic as he’s sen and can’t wear a mask or social distance .

RedGoldAndGreene · 11/04/2021 12:16

I don’t think people that paranoid should be working in shops.

The rules are set by HQ and they will be using government guidelines to come up with the number of people who should be in a shop depending on size. Staff don't want to be sacked for not following company policy.

While it's very difficult for you and your child, the only way round this is to shop at antisocial times like as soon as the shop open. Although they will review social distancing in June, I'll be surprised if we don't have them this winter which will be the real test of the NHS, vaccine boosters etc

Bluebird2021 · 11/04/2021 12:20

We also restrict access due to queues at service points in store building up

That queue for the tills with a metre between everyone will soon snake into aisles. Restricts access to half the store then. So you get the ‘excuse me can I just squeeze past’ scenario

Toilets shared with staff/customers are still closed here.... never been cleaner. But I’m human so have made exceptions for some people, same with queuing. Just ask the staff, we are allowed to use our discretion and common sense!

Blossomplease6 · 11/04/2021 12:20

The point of this really was to just try and find out if all the queuing and social distancing would be dropped in June, as that was my understanding.
Not to discuss the reasons for it.

@Bluebird2021

How is it zero risk? Our colleagues who were shielding are now back in store working. They haven’t stopped being vulnerable Vaccines won’t stop them from getting covid...just lessons the effect

Should we sack them and replace them with robots? Or ‘fitter’ people.

Or should everyone just use common sense and queue for a while to lesson the stress on staff who are there in store for up to 9/10 hours at a time?

Please stop with this.

This is too much common sense for Mumsnet to handle.

beginningoftheend · 11/04/2021 12:31

Covid is airborne so limiting numbers indoors is useful to restrict transmission.

Cases may be low(ish) just now but if we removed all restrictions we risk being the n the situation that Chile is in (Chile has vaccinated loads of people but is back in a mess).

Blossomplease6 · 11/04/2021 12:32

Common sense has all but disappeared. As has awareness of
Risk.

LondonWFuck · 11/04/2021 12:33

There was a small queue outside my local Tesco on Friday. Ridiculous. It needs to stop.

What has changed though? Covid is still here, the vaccination program is not finished.

Yes, I agree many people seem totally unaware of the risk of unlocking too fast!
Bluebird2021 · 11/04/2021 12:38

Oh well. Lockdown 4 coming our way again soon

Ohnomoreno · 11/04/2021 12:39

It will never end. People don't seem to think it's even that bad. I don't really understand, but there we are.

Blossomplease6 · 11/04/2021 12:43

We now have a two tier society. People willing to accept risk, and people who aren’t.
@Chickenriceandpeas I couldn’t agree more. Half of these now pointless rules need binning immediately.
Me too couldn’t agree more.

There are currently 125 cases in our city of half a million people.

However my DH can’t get the front of of his beard trimmed (sides only, gov regs) 😂😂😂

What does this even mean?

This is just the meaningless sort of thing people say when they are frustrated about covid.

I take and accept all sorts of risks. I also understand that epidemiological experts are very certain that rapid unlocking just now would cause major case spikes, as in Chile.

Those who aren't willing to accept risk should stay indoors in a full hazmat suit, must not consume any alcohol, fatty foods and clean all their shopping.

The same experts who reckoned they would be a spike once the children go back to school?

They will be spikes if we dragged this out all year. There will be spikes this winter.

WE HAVE VACCINES. If there is spikes, we won't have the hospital or deaths we did last year, not even a fraction.

Fembot123 · 11/04/2021 12:52

@murbblurb

Feral out of control NT children don't help this . Kids should not be 'skipping about' in shops. Control your trip hazard.
From your comment on this thread and others you seem to despise kids 👀
Fembot123 · 11/04/2021 12:53

@UserTwice

Wow. Children are not a 'trip hazard' and if you're tripping over kids perhaps you should look where you're going.

Children who randomly skip around shops into the paths of other shoppers (who are looking where they are going) are a trip hazard. And this is not even to do with Covid - your child shouldn't be barging into other people because they are not looking where they are going. A shop is not a playground.

Where do you get that this child is barging into people, get a hold of yourself.

Look, I understand your frustration but the truth is - you are a random username and you most likely have no relevant education or experience.

I still trust scientists and science.

Fembot123 · 11/04/2021 12:58

@Blossomplease6

I just don’t understand at what point we will be able to stop. It might seem a minor thing for some but my child can not cope, it’s like the straw that broke the camels back.
Not minor in the slightest Flowers
poppycat10 · 11/04/2021 13:06

work in an essential shop and although we can take precautions, it is not full proof due to cash handling

has there been a single documented case of anyone catching covid from handling cash?

I don't think there has.

However, I fundamentally disagree with the OP that there is "endless queuing" everywhere. I am not a queuer - if there is a queue I walk past and go back another time (except for the post office, you just can't "nip" to the post office - along with pharmacies, they are the last bastion of Stalinism). I go into town when I think it will be less busy - any afternoon is ok and although I don't often go at lunchtime, the last couple of times have been fine, I've been able to go straight into the shop. As I said other than Waitrose on Saturdays there are no queues.

There was a queue outside my local bike shop the other day (I say "queue" - one person waiting outside) but you would have had to have waited to be served anyway.
