Illegally obtaining jabs

What do people think about lying pretending to be a carer to get a COVID jab? A friend of mine who is in their early 20's has done exactly this and is pushing me to do the same, I am so shocked that this is happening and actually disgusted at said friend for blatantly lying just to get the jab as they have holidays booked abroad later on in the year!

It’s awful, it pushed people who need it forever down the queue.

lollipopsandrainbows · 09/04/2021 17:48

I know 5 people who have done this, one being my cousin. She claims she does her grandads shopping, who for starters is still working so is more than capable of doing it himself. And secondly, if he couldn't do things, then her mother would be his carer, not her. I go and do my Grandma's beer and wine run 3 times a week (yes, she does drink that much as she has nothing else to do), so does that mean I'm her carer too and can qualify for the vaccine?! Hardly.

I profoundly don't care. Esp. now the truly high risk have all had chance to get vacc'd.

Kijaji · 09/04/2021 17:56

Yes but there is still the 40-49's left to vaccinate, as someone mid 30's I will wait my turn and let those that have a higher chance of dying have it before me, maybe I'm too honest for my own good 🤷‍♀️

I'm clinically vulnerable and had to wait several weeks from getting my vaccine invite to having it. There were no local appointments available. Now I'll have to wait longer than necessary for my second jab to be fully protected.

If healthy 20s and 30s hadn't lied about being unpaid carers, maybe 45+ age group (who are vulnerable) wouldn't still be waiting or relying on a postcode lottery to have theirs.

Rosehip10 · 09/04/2021 18:00

The "unpaid carer" option has now been removed from the national booking website due to abuse - you now have to go through your GP to get it, so this should reduce the amount of piss taking liars.

PatchworkElmer · 09/04/2021 18:03

@Rosehip10 very glad to hear that. Several people I work with have done it and it makes me really cross.

yoshiblue · 09/04/2021 18:09

I found out my brother did it a couple of weeks ago. I'm absolutely disgusted with him and I've told him exactly what I think.

Mumoftwoinprimary · 09/04/2021 18:11

It is bad. The only good thing is that those who lie to get a vaccine probably also break lockdown rules so at least they are not spreading it so much anymore.

Zoorhik · 09/04/2021 18:19

I think UK values and morals have changed a lot in the last 10 years or so. It’s every person for themselves now with no thought for community.

Motorina · 09/04/2021 18:20

I think it's utterly shameful. THey've stolen vaccines from those at more risk, AND made life more difficult for those who genuinely are unpaid carers. Disgraceful.

AIMD · 09/04/2021 18:21

Wow I’d have to tell my friend what a douch they were I’d they did that! All for a holiday too!!

Jo99996 · 09/04/2021 18:23

Why was this ever an option on a public booking site?

Didn’t the learn from any random fruitcake asking for a test when they were restricted to key workers etc without proof.

whataballbag · 09/04/2021 18:23

As someone who actually is an unpaid carer it's fucking shit.

The amount of people have said to me 'oh you're lying about it' because of the sheer amount of people that have.

Much rather my dad wasn't dying than have had the fucking jab.

moochingtothepub · 09/04/2021 18:38

I got mine as an unpaid carer because I am, I went with my dd when she was getting hers (because I had to take her) and they offered me one. I'm also almost 50 so no I don't feel guilty. Everyone needs vaccinating, the good news is there is likely to be plenty of AZ vaccine available as no one else wants it!

Kijaji · 09/04/2021 18:47

I actually had cancer 5 years ago and my immune system has never been the same although I'm not classed as vulnerable, but I HATE liars and wouldn't be able to sleep at night! I agree with you all, I WILL wait my time and if it kills me beforehand then so be it, as least I'll die knowing my conscious is crystal clear which is a big thing for me!

OP posts:
Strictly1 · 09/04/2021 18:57

It's wrong. I'm in my 40s and work in a school so mixing with lots and am having to wait. Shane on them.

5lilducks · 09/04/2021 19:03

It's wrong and despicable behaviour, but not surprising. Thw people who are doing that are also probably the same people who bought all the toilet rolls and pasta just before the first lockdown.

ilovecherries · 09/04/2021 19:10

Immoral, yes. Illegal, hardly. Or maybe it just goes to show how the entire NHS and social care system is shored up by unpaid carers? You will always get the odd selfish sod, but I think what this exercise has actually done is highlighted the vast number of unpaid carers that exist. And there is NO reason why GPs would know about them, so I personally think it’s a bit shit if that’s another service that GPs get to be the gatekeepers for.

poppycat10 · 09/04/2021 19:13

I don't really care, we're all going to get done eventually and they've not stolen vaccines from the more at risk because they've already been done, they've only jumped the queue over people like me who've not been called yet. Marginally annoying but if I thought I could get away with it I would have done it too but am not enough of a CF to do it.

Second doses are not affected by first doses being given to a few "carers".

And I know some people did it who were single parents. They are carers and their children do depend on them. Not sure why caring for an elderly parent (who has been vaccinated) is seen as more important than caring for children (who have not).

Anyway the loophole has now closed so people can stop frothing.

Why are you not Group 6? You should have been done weeks ago.
Branleuse · 09/04/2021 19:17

I dont care.
If theyre anxious enough then I domt begrudge anyone. Im more concerned about those who refuse it

yeOldeTrout · 09/04/2021 21:59

@Tealightsandd, honestly if I could swap vaccine slots with you or anyone that keen, I would have done. Not an option allowed to me though.

XenoBitch · 09/04/2021 22:24

Are people doing this actually depriving anyone of their slot? I keep reading about places offering spare vaccines to groups further down the line at the end of the day, all the time.

lljkk · 09/04/2021 22:33

weeks ago I went to a drop in clinic for my jab... they wouldn't let DH get his jab then (just 4 years younger). I literally had zero wait & lots of Staff inside were sitting around with nothing to do.* Local NHS are still running drop-in clinics only for my age group & above priority, even though apparently we are already 96% vaccinated (someone from local NHS said on social media tonight). Confused

So you tell me if there's a policy roll out problem or 'cheaters' to blame for people under 50 not yet offered the jab in this region and more widely.

*one of the staff outside recommended DH claim to be a carer when we arrived, then DH could have got jab, but we're not that bothered
