Under 50s being vaccinated now

In our area, my OH is going for his AZ tomorrow and I'm ecstatic as he's the last of our immediate family to receive a vaccine. Well done NHS! Thought we'd be waiting till May!

sleepwouldbenice your post says under 40s will get J&J and you're saying you're nearly 50 - surely you (and me) will be next prior to the J&J ones?

Waxonwaxoff0 · 04/04/2021 20:48

I'm 30 and wouldn't mind J&J, it's only one jab so much more convenient.

WombatChocolate · 04/04/2021 20:55

Sky News has mention of supplies from India being further limited due to them reducing exports because of their Covid peak at home.

I do think the current supplies are being moved into bringing 2nd doses forward to ensure there is enough supply for all of those needed for 2nd jabs over coming weeks. They can’t wait. Sadly under 50s can, if there is only supply for one or the other.

mumwalk · 04/04/2021 21:03

@limitisup that may be the case in England but in Scotland we do not have access to a booking site. Invitation are sent out by letter, only rebookings (& carers) are online. No sign of any "procrastinating and dithering" here!

LimitIsUp · 04/04/2021 21:11

Apologies - I should have said in England

daisiesinmay · 04/04/2021 21:36

One thing that's worth bearing in mind is when the Moderna comes - in April? they won't be able to use that for 2nd doses so will have to give that to hopefully late 40s people

daryldixonsdreamgirl · 04/04/2021 21:41

I think it's crazy how some areas are further ahead than others. My partner and I are 28 years old and had our first jab last week.

ethelredonagoodday · 04/04/2021 21:46

My 39 year old brother and several of his similarly aged friends have had it!

Given it's only 500,000 doses, that would be used up within a day and will only scratch the surface?

Unless a more substantial stock is arriving, my feeling is that it will be June / July wait for Johnson and Johnson or Novavax for the 40s too.

daisiesinmay · 04/04/2021 22:03

17 million modern doses ordered but I'm not sure what's arriving when

Yep but we will need 2 jabs and they will only need one.....

My sister’s husband entered his details on the national booking site and was allowed to book based only on his age (43). Sister late 30s was immediately taken to the you are not eligible page after entering her details.

LimitIsUp · 04/04/2021 22:30

user is correct, only 500,000 doses due this month

Unfortunately this doesn't work for me, 48, or other posters on the other thread, before posters get their hopes up again.

At least one of the local vaccination centres in my part of London has been telling people they are now doing 2nd doses from 4-10 weeks after the 1st.

Very frustrating as it looks like my friends in their 30s and 40s who had their invites early for random reasons will now be fully vaccinated with both doses before I even get my first. I realise it's not personal but can't help feeling completely forgotten about.

Wales, late 40s having mine this week as are a lot of other people I know my age. It seems to be progressing really quickly here

I do empathise. I have contributed to a thread on here about the rights and wrongs of posting your vaccine status on social media and was one of a small minority who felt that posting "I have had my jab" or similar is insensitive towards the 'worried waiting'. Until I got my jab I felt (irrationally I know) that I didn't matter
Frazzled2207 · 05/04/2021 09:41

Am I right in thinking though that it’s wrong to suggest certain areas are ahead, basically it’s up to your gp hub? There are two in our area serving different gps and it would appear that one is well ahead of the other so can’t say that our area is ahead, or behind.

Also, if it gps who manually make us eligible to use the national link? Which would explain why some of us are able to access but some not? There again I don’t quite understand that theory because the national link only gives us access to the mass vaccination sites does it not? So would help the gp get ahead if loads of us went there instead....

WombatChocolate · 05/04/2021 09:48

GP hubs are meant to follow the NHS England instructions about rollout. There has been some flexibility within phase 1 (over 50s) but it has been very clear in the letters to GPs and local services over the last couple of weeks that they are not to move wholesale onto vaccinating phase 2 (under 50s) in any way beyond the using up of left-overs. In fact, in the letter in Thursday, they were told rather than give it to under 50s they should pull in Dose 2 people first, from 8 weeks after 1st jab. The instruction in bold was to not rollout to phase 2 until directly instructed.

However, info also shows that the national booking system will have less appts in the next couple of weeks at least. Those who hadn’t already booked there will increasingly find it did it to get slots at the mass centres or via the national site and instead over 50s who still haven’t booked will be directed to book locally via GP. But presumably lower numbers are expected as time passes and they have limited supply anyway for 1st doses until there are new surges. Enough is out by for 2nd doses to the 12 week timescale, plus they want to get a head with this 2nd doses cohort, perhaps in case later delays put later 2nd doses at risk and to mitigate that. The casualty is the under 50s getting delayed.

Useful link. Seems my area is doing fairly well. 86% over over 50s have had their first dose. I'm assuming that might include group 6 too, which will also include some under 50s.

It's a shame it doesn't also show a 'all adults' percentage too, and a second dose percentage,

My specific area is slightly lower than this when I zoom in but we have a much older population round here. Even so I know that many older people have now had their, second dose. When I went in with dh the other day they were doing second doses of anyone who'd had their, first dose in the 11/12 February, which is actually only 6 weeks or so ago. Dh is under 50 but got an end of the day jab. I'm group 6 so had mine in February.

Nearby chesterfield is doing under 50s at their vaccination hub and are allowing anyone who calls (possibly only over 4os but not sure) to book. I know friends in Sheffield who, have booked to go to them.

WombatChocolate · 05/04/2021 10:55

The reason GPs are asked not to give to u dear 50s but use doses instead to bring 2nd doses in sooner, is that supply for 10-12 weeks time is very insecure. All those given 1st jab now need 2nd doses in 10-12 weeks. If GPs give it to 1st does people when they’ve been asked not to, it runs the risk of there not being adequate 2nd doses for those same people when needed later. It is an important thing. Nits not as simple as just wanting to push on with the roll-out, because we don’t have 1-jab vaccine yet. People forget this need to plan ahead and that the government knows more about future supply than they tell us.

Frazzled2207 · 05/04/2021 11:16

@WombatChocolate
Totally get this but am wondering why some gps clearly are inviting under 50s. Presumably they are very sure they have enough to do them and also do 2nd doses.

IloveSooty424 · 05/04/2021 11:17

We OH and I were contacted by our GP practice on Saturday to book our vaccination this week. We are both 42.
