Under 50s being vaccinated now

musicalfrog · 01/04/2021 23:31

In our area, my OH is going for his AZ tomorrow and I'm ecstatic as he's the last of our immediate family to receive a vaccine. Well done NHS! Thought we'd be waiting till May!

OP posts:
daisiesinmay · 02/04/2021 09:11

Nothing here still (49) and can't book on the national system

Waxonwaxoff0 · 02/04/2021 09:17

I'm in Derbyshire and they are doing over 40s now, lots of my work colleagues in their 40s have had their first vaccinations this week.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 02/04/2021 09:19

Just next door to us in Nottinghamshire are not doing over 40s yet though.

megletthesecond · 02/04/2021 09:21

My GP's are into the 47-49 group (north Hampshire).
I'm 46 and checking twice a day.

ChloeDecker · 02/04/2021 09:31

Not here in my London borough but then wouldn’t expect it to, with a greater density of people I suppose. In fact, two local vaccination centres closed this week temporarily (for a few weeks) until supply is back up, so they are telling people.

NHS guidance is still for the over 50s still, so must be your GP, OP?

Just another postcode lottery situation with the NHS really.

Really pleased lots more people are getting vaccinated in the under 50s now. Can’t help but wish I could be one of them, especially working in close proximity to just under 2000 young people/children and it’s hard hearing when some people in their 40s (like me) and younger are getting vaccinated.

However, posts like these do also give me a little hope that I may not be waiting months, like the newspapers are stating I will.

FourWordsImMuNiTy · 02/04/2021 09:34

Are you in England grandmasterstitch? Your mum can book online if so.

I wonder how on earth GP's can be doing this when that letter was released by the medical director of NHS primary care:

"Inviting patients outside of cohorts 1– 9 is only permissible in exceptional circumstances. Those aged 49 years or younger should not be offered vaccination unless they are eligible via a higher cohort because they are e.g., clinically vulnerable, unpaid carer or frontline health and care workers. To ensure prioritisation compliance with minimum wastage, vaccination services working with their system must with immediate effect:

• Prioritise all short-life stock up to the week 29 March for use;

• Work with local authorities, voluntary community and faith sector organisations, to put in place reserve lists of people from eligible cohorts;

• Consider mutual aid between sites within the system, targeting areas of lower uptake, with reporting and recording completed and logged (ppds.palantirfoundry.co.uk);

• Declare excess long-life stock to regional leads where Cohorts 1 to 9 have been exhausted to enable allocations to be adjusted accordingly."

Bluntness100 · 02/04/2021 09:46

It’s using the short life stock up,

Unmellowbirds · 02/04/2021 09:46

Not in my area, but I'm pleased to see the second jab numbers rising and the hospitalisation/deaths falling. The sooner the most vulnerable are fully vaccinated, the better for all of us.

ihearttc · 02/04/2021 09:49

I’m assuming that mine was using up short life stock in a centre that’s just opened. It was only for yesterday and was just for school staff/police.

WombatChocolate · 02/04/2021 09:50

Yes, and another letter was released yesterday too emphasising again that rollout to under 50s was not to start until they were told to do so. The focus was to be 2nd doses and GPs starting to follow up over 50s who hadn’t booked via national system. Sounded like National Sysytem and mass centres wouldn’t be offering 1st jabs much over the next couple of weeks.

They were also closing the unpaid Carer loophole. If you look on national booking site, you can see there’s no longer the option to book there but people are told to go via GP. Too many people were lying and as ID wasn’t needed it was just too easy. Now the GP surgery will quiz people a bit more before booking unpaid carers.

So it’s interesting that people are still getting called who are under 50. Seems to me that they are called pretty short notice rather than booking 2 weeks ahead. GPs are told not to waste vaccine though too and there is some limited scope for discretion if they have made big efforts to reach earlier cohorts several times. Lots of GPs have done this to the nth degree, so I’m sure the sensible ones just get one and invite the upper 40s if they have some still. Clearly it’s the right thing to do. The worst thing would be if GPs were sitting on vaccine and it then got binned because they were scared of being in trouble by offering to upper 40s.

The variety I think comes from demographic differences in areas but also efficiency differences. Some are very very proactive in pushing ahead and active within their PCNs in terms of getting their patients into the vaccine lists for their local areas, but others less so. You can see it too in their communication via websites or Facebook, that some are pushing ahead and others trailing a bit more. I guess some have more resources and manpower to put into managing the lists and calling people up for last minute appointments. Patients at those surgeries get the calls and those who are much more pressed might have to wait for national rollout.

My DH - 49 was done this week. No word locally, so he rang the nearby pharmacy who are jabbing at 5.30 to ask if he could go on reserve list and pointed out he was 49 and could be there in 5 mins. They were closing at 6 and had one spare dose and were glad to hear from him. We were there in 7 mins and home within 25 mins of having phoned.

It’s worth calling the pharmacies near you that are jabbing if you can get there fast. If you enquire ‘on the off chance’ at the end of the day and ask to go on a list, even if it doesn’t come off today, you might find that in the next week or so, they suddenly have no-shows and you get a call near closing time. Worth trying I think. Take ID just in case, but they find your records on the system. The closer to 50 you are the more it’s likely that you will be out in reserve lists or be picked for spare doses. Clearly if there are no spares, you won’t be getting it.

moochingtothepub · 02/04/2021 09:55

In cities they seem to be rolling it out but where I live drs haven't even started on 50-54 (you can go to the local mass centre via website though). We are all vaccinated due to caring responsibilities though

Eccle80 · 02/04/2021 09:56

It seems to have become a total lottery by GP. I am over 40, asthmatic and still waiting, but I saw someone I know and her husband both under 40 and live a few miles away being vaccinated last weekend. I’m feeling fed up with it all to be honest, my asthma isn’t great at the moment and I am anxious about the kids catching it at school.

On the latest figures, our county had done almost 90% of 50-54 year olds by the 28th March, the vaccination centres won’t have anyone to vaccinate as the current second dose people were all done through GPs before the vaccination centres opened

GwendolineWindowlene · 02/04/2021 09:58

Online booking is open to under 50s.

ChloeDecker · 02/04/2021 10:01

@GwendolineWindowlene

Online booking is open to under 50s.
Do you mind me asking where?

Not according to the booking site it isn’t:

BogRollBOGOF · 02/04/2021 10:08

Recently turned 40 and been called up and vaccinated this week. Quite a lot in my neighbourhood have had the same. Had a great chat with my 42yo friend in the car park across our cars afterwards Grin

I was surprised when DH (49) got the message 10 days ago and wasn't expecting to get mine 6 days later.

We did have a reduced supply because of good progress a few weeks ago. Not sure if there may need to be a catch-up in some areas of the city if their take-up is lower.

I've known 50-60 yos around the country being vaccinated since mid-Feb.

sleepwouldbenice · 02/04/2021 10:09

@Bluntness100

It’s using the short life stock up,
They could allocate their slots to another gp surgery who haven't completed their lists
WombatChocolate · 02/04/2021 10:14

Mooching, GPs cannot get through everyone. Most groups are offered the national booking system and mass centres/pharmacies first. Those who can get to them should do so. The whole system moves fastest if each person books as soon as they can.

Given this is probably 2 journeys, and voluntary services and the NHS can also help with transport if needed, I’m surprised how many people do t seem willing to go to their mass centres but insist in waiting for GP invitations. If you’re eligible to book on the NHS system you’re eligible and that’s your invitation. You have had the invitation. Lots of other people haven’t yet.

When people don’t take up the offer to book on the national system, eventually their details will go to the GP for follow-up. Some are waiting for local and some are hesitant and will need several contacts. Some will book and then not show up. The government is factoring in multiple multiple contacts for some people. It’s necessary to reach most people and get closer to herd immunity and also because COVID is rapidly becoming a disease of deprivation as it is deprived groups who are more vulnerable to catch it and more likely not to get jabbed. Vast resources are needed though for these multiple contacts, vaccine buses, drop in centres etc. It’s so important that those who can, just book as soon as they are eligible. I know not everyone can and the system is set up for those too, but for those who can, just get in the national booking site and take the first slot you can make. You’ll be jabbed sooner and so will others too if you do this.

Jemma2907 · 02/04/2021 10:17

My Husband and a few friends were done last weekend after phone calls from their doctors. They are all 37/38. No underlying health conditions but all the same local authority.

Halloweenrainbow · 02/04/2021 10:23

I'm confused! I thought it was still only those with health conditions, over 50s and 2nd doses for now???

bishbashbosh99 · 02/04/2021 10:25

39 and we got called last week for ours. SO happy but also feel slightly guilty as my older family members havnt had theirs

Flev · 02/04/2021 10:29

Total postcode lottery, its ridiculous! My husband (mid 40s) is starting to get really depressed about it now. We're Derbyshire, lots of younger friends living in Derby City have been done, and several friends over the Nottinghamshire border were done when they accidentally opened up bookings to all over 40s a month or so ago. Not a peep on any form of social media or their website from our doctor, so we have no idea where they're up to.

Redcrayons · 02/04/2021 10:30

@GwendolineWindowlene

Online booking is open to under 50s.
Where? I’ve been trying every day as I’m 4 months away from my 50th and computer says no.
WombatChocolate · 02/04/2021 10:31

Flev, do you know where the local pharmacies are that are jabbing? Look on your CCG site if you don’t know. Find their name and and look up their phone number. Ring them 30 mins before closing time and see if you can go on a reserve list mentioning age and that you can be there in 10 mins. Doing this can benefit you and also help them prevent wastage.

wonderstuff · 02/04/2021 10:35

Friends in late 40s are being called here. Teachers in some local schools have also been given left over jabs, very frustrating that my school doesn't seem to have been offered left over jabs and we're right next to a vaccination centre.

They have done most of groups 1-9, I know second jabs will take priority this month but will they stop first jabs completely?
