Under 50s being vaccinated now

In our area, my OH is going for his AZ tomorrow and I'm ecstatic as he's the last of our immediate family to receive a vaccine. Well done NHS! Thought we'd be waiting till May!

@WombatChocolate as far as I can see there's no pharmacies involved here, one GP practice is covering it for the whole town (and again, total silence on their website & social media about progress). Most older people I know have gone to the mass vaccination hub in Derby - and I had mine there as a social care worker - but that's obviously not an option right now.

daisiesinmay · 02/04/2021 10:42

Same Redcrayons It's actually quite disheartening patiently waiting your turn at 49 when much younger ones are seemingly now being jabbed. I wish the Government would give us a clue really

ilovebagpuss · 02/04/2021 10:42

Just really annoying how different it is across areas. Our GP posted on local FB info to say they had been told not to invite any under 50’s by the LA.
However other areas are merrily vaccinating away.

NotCurrently · 02/04/2021 10:50

@WombatChocolate I’ve been following your posts so am pretty clued up on what is happening nationally. Dh and I are both 48 so we were resigned to having to wait until the under 50 “ban” was lifted. But we both got texts this week from our GP and Are booked in at the local GP hub for 10 days time. My friends who are 47 haven’t had texts yet. Shocked but very relieved

WombatChocolate · 02/04/2021 10:54

Flev, with one Google search, I could see Derby and surrounds had 3 pharmacies offering jabs from late Jan.

The NHS England coronavirus site lists all the CCGs and their various sites too. Each areas CCG should have a page which lists their centres.

You have to root around a bit for the info. They don’t want people banging on the door of pharmacies asking for jabs all the time, but most places have pharmacies offering now too.

The other way people find out where they are is going on the national booking site and proceeding so far by saying they are social care workers etc. This takes them to the booking page and they can see the local sites. They obviously stop at that point and don’t actually book or lie on a booking.

The system is very much a Lottery at the moment for 40s. I’m strongly against people lying to get jabs. Shocked by how many claimed to be unpaid carers who weren’t. However, getting on reserve lists or seeing if there is left over vaccine at the end of the day that will be binned seems a benefit to the person in their late 40s and all vaccine sites are encouraged to use and not waste those last few doses. Being proactive can mean you might get one of those. Saying you can be there in 10 mins, that you’re late 40s and then if you’re a teacher or policeman etc will all help....they will want to prioritise the older people close to the cut off age over 30s and early 40s, understandably.

WombatChocolate · 02/04/2021 10:55

NotCurrently...great news. Which area of country are you in.
Such a relief for you.

Hope lots more people hear soon too.

BentBastard · 02/04/2021 11:05

Have to say. I'm starting to feel a little frustrated.

My husband is 48, overweight and with asthma that is currently not great and he's about the only bloody person I know that hasn't been invited.

Family in different authorities, younger, invited by GPs. Several have had through jobs, fair enough. Some, not clear how but almost all are less clinically vulnerable than husband and yet he waits probably for another month.

I don't blame them, and good for them getting it but feels like husband slipped through an misfortune net and I just want the relief of him being jabbed because when anxiety overwhelms me my imagination goes into overdrive (I know this is my issue).

nordica · 02/04/2021 11:21

The postcode lottery is very frustrating, and seems to be down to very local differences down to which GP surgery is moving forward quicker than the one a 10 minute walk away.

Will be interested in seeing if the invites to under 50s with no underlying health conditions continue after Easter as they were meant to stop in April?

mrsknottschicken · 02/04/2021 11:37

It’s very frustrating, especially when you see those around you who are the same age getting done. But April 15th is not far away. In typically non plain English style, Matt Hancock said there would be no weeks in April with no first jabs, so if the govt meets the April 15 target then surely the 45+, at least, will be able to book from then?

That sounds better. I thought he said under 50s wouldn't happen at all in April, but I admit I never watch the briefings live, I always read up about them after so I information can get distorted.

mrsknottschicken · 02/04/2021 11:52

I don’t recall him saying under 50s wouldn’t be done at all - in fact I don’t recall him mentioning under 50s at all. Someone else in government (I forget who) suggested that Novovax would start to be given to under 50s in mid-April, but we’ve only got an initial shipment of 500k, which is not many. I’d quite like that one, though I’ll take any I am offered. They cannot give Novovax for second doses so it will go to younger people, 49 downwards.

User27aw · 02/04/2021 11:55

Im 48 and still waiting, getting fed up about the postcode lottery. Im too far away from any of the pharmacies doing the jabs and my GP has said they wont be moving onto the under 50s until told to.

BentBastard · 02/04/2021 11:56

No, I didn't say he said under 50s wouldn't be done at all.

Just that my understand had been that he said vaccinators had been told not to offer any first jabs to anyone outside the priority groups until the end of April, but clearly I'm wrong.

CorianderBee · 02/04/2021 11:57

Got mine last week! Am 25 but recently moved to vulnerable list. Have a lot of mates my age who have had it by hanging around distribution centres at closing time.

User27aw · 02/04/2021 12:00

I wish they would have a proper process for spare vaccines. It all seems so random and unfair.

GwendolineWindowlene · 02/04/2021 12:00

Ah, the under 50 I know who has booked online is in NI, maybe it's different in different parts of the UK.

Yes, sorry, I meant to say I don’t think he said under 50s wouldn’t be done in April...he was very vague and just said they were concentrating on groups 1 to 9 for the next few weeks. But if they meet their April 15 target I can’t see a reason why they wouldn’t broaden the roll out. Hope so anyway!
BentBastard · 02/04/2021 12:06

Thank you MrsKnott. Clearly I need to watch these briefings myself and not rely on reporting (but man do I find them unbearable).

makingmyway10 · 02/04/2021 12:11

45 plus being done in my area. DH is 46 and fit and healthy and had his this week. I am 45 and had mine in Feb under group 6.

fudgefox · 02/04/2021 12:13

Postcode lottery. Wish people would stop showing off.

Call the GP. If he's obese and asthmatic they'll probably invite him in. I have a pal who is 33 who was invited due to BMI and ethnicity.
CorianderBee · 02/04/2021 12:21

@Jemma2907

My Husband and a few friends were done last weekend after phone calls from their doctors. They are all 37/38. No underlying health conditions but all the same local authority.
You don't know if they have underlying though? I look strong, fit slim and healthy. Am still vulnerable my
BentBastard · 02/04/2021 12:23

Coriander he's not quite fat enough and not quite asthmatic enough for group 6 and GP won't even take vaccine related calls.

We just have to be patient. Cases are low in our area and he works from home. I freely admit I am more anxious about it than risk probably required s but I have a lot of horrid shit going on at the moment so it's all magnified.

ChloeDecker · 02/04/2021 12:23

@User27aw

I agree completely with this. Disadvantages those who can’t hang around at the end of the day at vaccination centres due to jobs/childcare but are still old enough to be at more risk with Covid complications than younger people who can or those working from home more safely.

It has also been shocking how many people have lied saying they are unpaid carers to get a vaccine and got away with it, as well as how many vaccines have had to be thrown away at the end of the day.

A proper process for the ‘leftovers’ and ‘no shows’ should have been implemented (like Israel) instead of this postcode lottery and fraud causing such disparity and lack of fairness.

Jemma2907 · 02/04/2021 12:31

I definitely know that my healthy Husband of 10 years and my close friends of 25 years have no underlying conditions. Why wouldn't I? Granted I don't know if everyone in my locality who has been vaccinated under the age of 40 has unknown health conditions but my friends and family have no reason to lie about it.
