Some rather good points raised in the article to be fair

I can’t imagine going back to a crowded place and can’t imagine everyone will be so it will be interesting to see what happens and if things will change to entice customers back.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 24/03/2021 22:51

How are they going to sort out vaccine passports? The ship has sailed on that one. They don't have the wherewithal to sort it out in retrospect- should have been given them with the vaxx.

HolmeH · 24/03/2021 22:52

@IceCreamAndCandyfloss - did you go out last summer? Pubs & restaurants were rammed (as much as they were allowed to be).. I don’t think people are going to be to concerned..

I cannot wait to be in a crowd. My local supermarket was really busy last weekend, the clothes isles were so busy you basically had to queue & wait your turn to fit down with a trolley! It felt so good. Normal almost. I just can’t wait to feel that buzz in a restaurant or theatre or Christmas market.. I miss it all so much!

I’m not against vaccine passports but only once everyone has been offered their first dose here in the UK. It’s grossly unfair on the low risk under 40’s otherwise!

EasterIssland · 24/03/2021 22:55

Interesting that he thinks pubs want it. By June most younger people will have had 1 of the jabs only so would they be banned til fully protected .??

Tickly · 24/03/2021 22:55

Fine...can I have my vaccine now please. I can't wait to head to the pub.

Nhs app. Nhs has record of all your vaccines etc so easy to display whether you’ve had and which ones

Johnson said he believed Covid certification had the backing of the British people who understood the need for protective measures, and suggested he backed a more wide-ranging use for vaccine passports, which a committee led by Michael Gove is currently investigating.

Groan.

Johnson said there was already widespread use of similar requirements in medical professions. “I do think that the basic concept of vaccine certification should not be totally alien to us because, after all, when you are entrusted with the care of a patient and you’re a surgeon, you’re expected to have a vaccination against hepatitis B,” he said.

Because that's SO similar to going down the pub. Hmm

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 24/03/2021 22:59

Does it exist already?

Hardbackwriter · 24/03/2021 22:59

Steve Baker, the Conservative deputy chair of the Covid Recovery Group of lockdown-sceptic MPs, said it was deeply concerning.

“Whether the state legislates for it, recommends it or simply allows it the result will be the same,” he said.

“A two-tier Britain that prevents pregnant women from taking part in society, given that the government is telling them not to take the vaccine, or one where we turn back the clock and tolerate businesses turning away customers from communities which have shown an unfortunate hesitancy to take up the offer of a vaccine. We must not fall into this ghastly trap.”

Oh God, I agree with something Steve Baker said. I feel like I need a shower.

Utter lunacy - in a blink of the eye we move more and more to a police stare for a virus that is mild as quoted by whitty for the vast majority

Am I alone in thinking all sense of proportion has gone out of the window. I suspect if we didn’t have social media and 24 he news coverage this would have been a totally different situation

Totallydefeated · 24/03/2021 23:02

They’ve been itching to coerce it from the off, and they think the pub will be their trump card, given we’re a nation of boozers.

But I’m not sure I can see pubs being willing to turn down clientele. They’ve been struggling for years now, since before Covid. Are they going to voluntarily reduce their income more? Maybe some will make a virtue of providing a ‘safe’ environment. I can’t see them all doing it tho.

FizzyPink · 24/03/2021 23:06

I’m all for a passport if I can have the jab tomorrow. But being 29 I’ll be waiting a while.

It does feel grossly unfair for the under 35s who have lost the most income wise during the last year and who are potentially now being denied the chance to socialise/holiday etc

If they'd be allowed to drop social distancing if they do this, as the article suggests, but not if they didn't then they're choosing between two different ways of having to turn people away, I guess.

Apparently some people can see it in the nhs app. Haven’t tried it myself
TableFlowerss · 24/03/2021 23:08

I can’t see many landlords/restaurants asking for certificates. They’ve been closed for the best part of a year for normal trade so there’s highly unlikely to insist on vaccines.

They’ll be needing the income and understandably!

CrunchyCarrot · 24/03/2021 23:09

'Papers for pints' says the BBC article on the same subject, quoting Boris.

This is an excellent point. It would be so unfair for the younger generation if they couldn’t go out for months and end to come, because they’ve not had a jab. Especially given the sacrifices they’ve had to make so it’s only fair it shouldn’t be introduced until everyone has had the chance of a vaccine!

MistressoftheDarkSide · 24/03/2021 23:13

Tricky, tricky, tricky, if I may quote a favourite witch.

The two tier element is coming into being via the one thing that will lure everyone in nicely - socialising with alcohol, the easiest, legal, cheapest and most damaging thing to health and social issues. (Holds up hand, yes, I'm a rank hypocrite who indulges, but am trying to think big picture).

Small independent pubs with limited capacity will have to do this or massively lose income, or will close because they can't keep up with big chains and all their food options, promotions etc etc. Big chains will do it, because increased profits.

How long before some wag hacks the system rendering it meaningless? How complicated would the security measures have to be?

And wearing my best conspiracy hat ever, what if people go a bit nuts - I can see drinks promotions left right and centre, people go giddy with excitement after months of stir craziness, and inadvertently (or by design) cause public disorder in the summer months? Oh wait there's a bill for that, and there will be your proof it was needed.

Like I say, wild speculation, but oh my, the potential aside from the virus itself....

lurker101 · 24/03/2021 23:13

I would definitely go to a pub/nightclub like that - if it meant it would be full rather than socially distanced and at limited capacity. That’s part of the fun of a night out for a lot of people. I miss the hum of a busy bar with people standing shoulder to shoulder and gathering around the bar to order drinks

Totallydefeated · 24/03/2021 23:23

Ah yes, I missed that bit. You’re probably right.

The sneaky bastards.

Interesting how they turn their attention to pubs as soon as it looks like holidays abroad will be out of the question this summer, so they won’t be able to force the vaccines that way.

minniemoocher · 24/03/2021 23:24

@RuleWithAWoodenFoot

Easy we have nationalised health here, your vaccination is recorded on your health record within 24 hours. They obviously need the computer software designed but should be simple to send a letter/card 3 weeks after your second dose confirming that you have had the vaccine and the date of the second dose. Your address is on your medical record so if you have recently moved make sure your dr knows (that has caught people trying to get vaccine appointments!)

BelleHathor · 24/03/2021 23:25

The market will decide, Boris has cleverly left it to individual venues. I predict large scale boycotting by the general public which is ridiculous when the economy needs to get going.

AcornAutumn · 24/03/2021 23:27

I'm not going to a venue that requires personal information.

I've had my first vaccine. But this is horrible dangerous territory.

Dustyboots · 24/03/2021 23:31

I'm not getting vaccinated - was on the fence - but I'm not being cornered into it. And if the economy loses out because people like me are happier to miss out on going to pubs etc - then so be it.

sirfredfredgeorge · 24/03/2021 23:36

Yeah, nothing could possibly go wrong with having to have your logged in NHS app available for the bouncers in a pub to have a nose through, what could you possibly not want the pub to know?
