Between that and the mandatory vaccines for carers it's all going a bit North Korea.

The poor government have to start somewhere, I don't expect them to get there overnight. But it's a start at least.

Good, holidays abroad aren't essential in any universe. There is a long list of exceptions of essential travel (including funerals, childcare and many other legitimate reasons to travel).

When so many people are dying it seems a bit much that some people get to spread covid around just so they can get a beach holiday.

Freedom is being eroded. I find it disturbing.

The virus doen't move around on its own. People move it around. Yes, it is horrible, but I would far rather be able to go out and about freely in my own country than continue in a state of yo-yo lockdowns because some people can't do without a foreign holiday.

I realise it isn't fair on people whose families live overseas, but it is pretty obvious that the countries who have been stricter about foreign travel are the ones who are enjoying more freedom now.

I was just about to say 'Where has this news come from, as it's illegal right now' as @notimagain has linked to... but then I scrolled up again to see it's the Daily Mail.

It's not about the holidays. I really wish people would consider the long term implications of what's happening.

I like how they refer to "a reasonable excuse" for travelling, rather than a reason or justification or requirement or exemption. I assumed that was just the Mail, but no, the new government forms and guidance (for travel 29/3 and after) use the term:

You must complete this form to confirm that you have a reasonable excuse for leaving the UK to travel abroad...

Reasonable excuses for international travel include: •work•volunteering•education•medical, or compassionate grounds•funerals•leaving the UK if you do not live in the UK, and have only been here temporarily•allowing access to parents with children who do not live in the same country.
