Can this be true? Tons of people lying to get vaccine.

My mum has just told me that my dodgy cousin (about 30) has just had his vaccine with all of his builder mates by lying and saying they are ‘unpaid carers’ on the nhs website. She said no one bothered to check any of them.
Firstly, how bloody outrageous of them pulling the wool over the vaccine centres eyes and secondly, why isn’t their any check, however minor?
I know we all need to get done eventually but this has really pissed me off.

It must be different in different areas then. In our area we are opening up to over 40’s and my husband booked last week could of chosen and day any time. Hopefully you get yours soon they do seem to be going at pace!

Susanw1985 · 23/03/2021 07:24

In Northern Ireland they’ve taken this option off the online booking portal and you now have to go through gp or trust Carers coordinator. I’m still waiting to get my husband it as my sons carer - awaiting asd diagnosis (we get dla and he has a statement) - my job is b frontline so I’ve got mine already - crazy that people are abusing this system so those of us that need it can’t avail of it

I would also like to ask what proof vaccinators are asking for. Every website linked to unpaid carers and the gov site tell you that if you are an unpaid carer you do not need to provide proof. So if people are being turned away because they do not have proof that is going completely against the government guidelines.

FunnyWonder · 23/03/2021 08:38

It's all a bit of a mess when it comes to carers. Logically I knew when the option for unpaid carers to get vaccinated appeared on the Northern Ireland criteria, that this described me. But because no proof was needed, I felt a strange combination of anxiety and guilt when going for my jab.

If I got sick, my mum wouldn't get her medication, her shopping, various appointments made and attended, cleaning and laundry done. The list goes on. And on!

I've had both vaccines. Only thing I have shown is the card stating what vacine i had. Thats it.
Spikeyball · 23/03/2021 08:59

Although the vaccine rollout has generally been very good it has been chaotic regarding unpaid carers. This is because the government has no idea how many unpaid carers there are and doesn't have any desire to know.

I got it automatically through CA. We had to wait to see if it would be recognised by the GP that dh also needed vaccinating because of ds requiring 2:1 care. Our GP did recognise it but I think another GP would not have done which would have put ds at risk. Dh even if he didn't earn too much of course cannot claim carers because there is no legal recognition of 2:1 care being required for anyone.

Spikeyball · 23/03/2021 09:02

When I say not recognised that is at home. It can be and is recognised in professional settings.

becauseIcare · 23/03/2021 09:11

I had mine and they were very vigilant cross checking letter with computer records.

FinallyHere · 23/03/2021 09:36

When I was waiting to get vaccinated they were going along the line asking if

That is not how it worked when I went to the local hub. They checked what time our appointment was before letting us even drive on site exactly to avoid any queues anywhere.

Inwiththenew · 23/03/2021 11:26

I’m sure it’s balanced by the amount of people not taking the vaccine.

KisstheTeapot14 · 23/03/2021 11:55

@Spikeyball Here, here! absolutely this government would prefer unpaid carers to just carry on with no real recognition of how they quietly keep this country afloat (and imagine the cost of all that care if unpaid carers didn't provide it to their loved ones).

Interestingly the census did ask about care duties and how much time you spend caring. Wonder why they are collecting stats on that? Have they before? Ten years ago is a long time to remember what they asked last time!

I went to the hospital hub and there was a que as no booking needed. Just turn up. They ask if carer, you got jab.
ohcarolina2001 · 23/03/2021 14:47

I know of two people who have done this. Disgraceful, particularly in light of the recent vaccine supply delays . They jumped the queue leaving people in their 50s unvaccinated

vickibee · 23/03/2021 14:52

My ndn has a go parent and they both got theirs despite being late twenties with no underlying conditions or caring responsibility. She openly told me this last week. An example of nepotism I believe.
I was a bit surprised to say the least and told her not to gloat about it. ☹️

Iamclearlyamug · 23/03/2021 15:25

@boon this worries me too, I don’t have any proof so if they ask I’ll have to walk away. I’ve taken screen shots of the guidance on the carers website I’m a member of but can’t find actual government guidance - do you know where I can find this?

Cookerhood · 23/03/2021 15:51

At every vaccination clinic I have been at they have asked if anyone has family members that need vaccinating. This isn't queue jumping, it's using up supplies that might otherwise go to waste. They often call local police stations or schools & get them in - all the teachers/TAs etc etc at our local primary school got them this way last week. And good for them, they've battles on through this with no protection.

Northernlass99 · 23/03/2021 16:27

At my local GPs they are desperately trying to find people to vaccinate. They are now inviting down to 47 year olds. They did everyone in the flats opposite the surgery, all the rotary club, all the volunteers etc. A friend went for a hospital clinic appointment and they jabbed her there and then because they had loads of vaccine left.

Lying about being a carer is not good when other genuine carers are not jabbed, but I can't get that worked up about it because we will all be done soon enough. If you think you are eligible as a carer just book.

Wrong thread! Blush

bjjgirl · 23/03/2021 17:41

My friend was asked to get ppl booked in (works Nhs and was told they had to fill 1200 spaces) she then contacted me (front line key worker) and I passed on the message, we booked on and then when we turned up some were told they couldn't have it as they didn't fit requirements, however by speaking to the lady a few of us realised we did qualify. Which is different to a different area where they contact some of the key workers to offer their spare places

These are the reasons some people qualified which surprised them:

So steroid use asthma
Caring for a child with disability as long as have an official diagnosis
Mental illness

PaintMePurple · 23/03/2021 19:06

I think it’s different for different areas.
I had my vaccine about 4 weeks ago. I’m in my 30’s, never been a carer and have no underlying health conditions.
My gp surgery just sent me a text asking me to book so I did.

According to our local Facebook pages lots of people received texts that day that weren’t expecting it yet.

HelloMissus · 23/03/2021 20:00

Well in order to help as many caters as possible get vaccinated, we inevitably let a few rogues through.
That’s fine, I think.
TBH the roll out has been so efficient and painless I think we can afford not to worry about a few tiny wrinkles.

PandaFluff · 24/03/2021 08:41

My neighbour told me her son lied and said he was a carer to get one. Not sure if it's true as she does like to exaggerate a bit!

TSR1 · 24/03/2021 09:43

I work in a school and we all got a message yesterday saying we could be vaccinated later this week at a local doctors surgery.

I wonder if now the government have said don't offer it to the under 50's, there is going to be more of this sort of thing going on as vaccination centres and surgeries have to get rid of their excess suplies somehow so are moving on to doing it by profession or people saying they have caring responsibilities even if no proof.

Cookerhood · 24/03/2021 09:49

Exactly the same as here TSR1. As I said up thread, round here (& I imagine other places) there is a batch going out of date on March 31st so they need to use it up.
