One dose of AZ?

Bluenightowl · 17/03/2021 22:19

For my own reasons I do not want to get a second dose of AZ (there is plenty of debate on other threads about AZ and I don't want this to turn into another anti EU/pro AZ thread ).

I read previously one dose of AZ will give 12 weeks protection against covid?

Can I then get a second dose of another vaccine e.g Pfizer or start again with a different one shot vaccine?

Or as AZ gives 76% protection for up to 90 days, and a second dose will increase protection up to 84% for an unknown time period - is it necessary to get another vaccine at all?

The short answer on the science is we don't know yet. We don't know how long the efficacy of a single dose lasts, and we don't know the impact of starting over from scratch.

The perhaps more relevant answer is where in the world are you? Assuming you're UK I rather suspect you're unlikely to be offered a new course of a different vaccine, at least in the near future. When boosters get rolled out in the autumn, then maybe but, right now, it's unlikely.

So your choice may be having your second dose of Ox/Az, or being an experiment of one on how long immunity from a single dose of it lasts.

JS87 · 17/03/2021 22:23

No I don’t think you can get a different vaccine as a second dose. You can only have what they offer you. If you had AZ it will be AZ. If your first was Pfizer I think you’d be more likely to possibly have az as a second dose as I think there’s a possibility we might not get all the Pfizer we need for second doses in time (not trying to scaremonger l, just using it as an example that I think with AZ first you have no chance of being offered something else as we have good supply of AZ.

JS87 · 17/03/2021 22:25

I suspect one dose of AZ will be similar to node dose of Johnson and Johnson which is licensed as one dose only. So some people in the world who get that vaccine will probably have around the same protection as you from one dose of AZ

dany174 · 17/03/2021 22:28

I guess you would have to wait until the vaccine is privately available and then you could pay to get the Pfizer. But I don't see that happening until next year somewhere.

Aren't we all experiments though as nobody knows how long either a single OR double dose lasts? One dose is expected to last 90 days, a second dose possibly six months? Who knows.

I'm not in the UK and the majority of our vaccinations have been Pfizer so far. I'm one of the few who had AZ, It has been suspended and I don't want another even if it is re-released.

@Bluenightowl

Do you need reassurance on the blood clot nonsense? The EMA and WHO have both confirmed no additional risk

dementedpixie · 17/03/2021 22:33

Did you have side effects from the 1st dose?
Why don't you want the 2nd dose?

Bluenightowl · 17/03/2021 22:34

It isn't nonsense. 9 second doses of AZ have been given in Spain and a woman with no underlying health issues has died from a brain hemorrhage.

UmbilicusProfundus · 17/03/2021 22:35

They are looking at this in trials, but not going to happen as standard practice (yet).

For example:

Newpuppymummy · 17/03/2021 22:37

@Bluenightowl how do you know it’s linked to ty vaccine though?

WhiskersPete · 17/03/2021 22:39

People with no underlying health conditions die from brain haemorrhages every year. The number dying this year is no higher than the background population.

UmbilicusProfundus · 17/03/2021 22:40

Oh just seen you are not in UK, so who knows what they will do wherever you are.

I assume your figure of 9 second doses is a typo, or lacking crucial context...

Bluenightowl · 17/03/2021 22:40

I have felt unwell since getting the first dose. Such a headache/migraine probably brought on by stress from reading about AZ tbh.

We have private healthcare so yes I think vaccinations will be offered privately later in the year. Maybe by then they will know more about it too. They will also be keen to have everyone vaccinated so I expect they will give a choice of vaccinations.

My question really was would one AZ be enough or start over again with two of another kind whenever it is available. I don't mind waiting at all. I work from home and we have a strict lockdown. I don't have any intention of travelling abroad for the next year or even two if necessary.

You need to ask your dr in the country you reside nobody on here can tell you

I’m in the mixed dose trial in the U.K. - preliminary results are due in June I think.

Bluenightowl · 17/03/2021 22:50

Thank you RoseWineTime
When do you find out if you are getting placebo? Do you know what the mix is - AZ and Pfizer? Did you have 12 weeks in between? I don't know how it works as Pfizer has 4 weeks between doses and AZ 4-12? How long did you wait?

Midlifephoenix · 17/03/2021 22:54

Why ask a bunch of people who have as much knowledge as you? This is why you have a fear of the AZ vaccine- looking for answers in the wrong place, reading sbout non causation stories. Ask someone qualified to answer.

This.
RoseWineTime · 17/03/2021 23:07

No one on our trial is getting the placebo. You either have two of the same (Pfizer or AZ) or two different, either 4 weeks apart or 12 weeks apart. I’m in the 4 week cohort and my second dose is this weekend.

Bluenightowl · 17/03/2021 23:20

Oh you must have had Pfizer at least first then if yours is four weeks apart?

Do you know how many are in the trial?

OP posts:
RoseWineTime · 17/03/2021 23:23

I think there are 820 people all over 50 in the trial. No I may have had AZ first although I googled the syringe for each type of vaccine and it looked like the Pfizer one. No idea if they use different ones for the trial though.

Bluenightowl · 17/03/2021 23:25
  1. A very small number to base any medical results on really.

It sounds more like a cosmetic cream :(

Exactly!
Bluenightowl · 17/03/2021 23:30

Because in other threads people are jumping up and down declaring themselves experts on AZ and vaccinations.
