One dose of AZ?

Bluenightowl · 17/03/2021 22:19

For my own reasons I do not want to get a second dose of AZ (there is plenty of debate on other threads about AZ and I don't want this to turn into another anti EU/pro AZ thread ).

I read previously one dose of AZ will give 12 weeks protection against covid?

Can I then get a second dose of another vaccine e.g Pfizer or start again with a different one shot vaccine?

Or as AZ gives 76% protection for up to 90 days, and a second dose will increase protection up to 84% for an unknown time period - is it necessary to get another vaccine at all?

The second isn't due for 12 weeks.

^You must have had time to consider it if you knew the appointment was imminent?*

I registered online and we were told it would be approx June or later. I put it out of my head. A couple of weeks later, I got called for an appt ie that day. I panicked and went along, it was rushed and I hadn't got my head around it. I found out it was AZ at the vaccination centre which I knew I didn't want. I should have stood up and walked out. I wasn't excited or elated. I was scared and I'm now more scared than ever.

Do you have health anxeity, OP, or a condition which makes clotting a higher risk for yourself?

Bluenightowl · 18/03/2021 00:20

I didn't have health anxiety before the vaccination. Now I definitely do. There is a history of heart/stroke problems in my family.

GreyhoundG1rl · 18/03/2021 00:20

Why register if your group weren't eligible until June and you didn't want it anyway?

1forAll74 · 18/03/2021 00:22

I would prefer the same vaccine for my second one later. The AZ one. I don't fancy the mixing of vaccines .

Frequency · 18/03/2021 00:25

Stopping the pill because of the faintest chance you'd experience clotting makes it appear as though the health anxiety was there prior to the AZ jab.

Is there other things you've done/not done to avoid or minimise the risk of clotting and have you sought help for your anxiety?

The chance of you catching Covid is far higher than the chance of developing blood clots.

YellowPurple · 18/03/2021 00:25

Mixing of the vaccines can be done in Emergency situations not just because someone has changed there mind about what one they wanted

You dont have to have the 2nd dose.
No-one is forcing you

Motorina · 18/03/2021 00:25

@YellowPurple it's even better than that.

Risk in a 'normal' population is around 0.1-0.2%.

There have been 22 blood clot cases in 3 million vaccines. Even if ALL of them are directly caused by the vaccine, that's a risk of 0.0007%. It's literally a seven in a million chance.

We were asked to register and told our category would be slow to be called We also registered presuming it would be Pfizer as thats the main one offered here. I can only presume there were cancellations and we were called very suddenly.
But does it really matter? The problem is I have had one AZ and I don't intend to get another.

The poster who is in a mixed vaccine trial is the type of info I was hoping to get here........

Kimye4eva · 18/03/2021 00:26

OP what exactly is your issue with the AZ vaccine? You haven’t actually said.

On the blood clot “risk”, the incidence of blood clots post vaccination is actually lower than in the general population.

Are you in a healthcare setting? I'm still confused as to why you registered / were told to register if you didn't actually want the vaccine.

I haven't said because I don't want this to turn into a pro Uk/anti EU type thread. I have decided not to have a second dose. I want to find out my options (if any) from others in the same situation.

Ah, ok. Will there be repercussions for not going ahead?

You need to ask a healthcare provider in the country in which you live to find this out. A message board largely comprised of people in a different country to your own, with no knowledge of your age or health status, is not going to be able to give you the information you're asking for.
Bluenightowl · 18/03/2021 00:31

I didn't not want 'the vaccine'. I didn't want the AZ vaccine. The chance of getting that vaccine was low as the main vaccine here is Pffizer. When I arrived to the vaccination centre, I was told it was AZ.

All I can take from that is you don’t want AZ because you are anti UK?!
CharlotteRose90 · 18/03/2021 00:34

I think people are going overboard with this now. Blood clots have been linked to both the Astra Zeneca and Pfizer vaccines but not proven it was caused. Honestly your more likely to get a blood clot on the contraception pill then you are from the injection.

YellowPurple · 18/03/2021 00:36

There is no Evidence because the trials are still happening and even when there is evidence, no country will be routinely mixing vaccines

Bluenightowl · 18/03/2021 00:37

No repercussions. They can't force people to do anything as pointed out earlier in the thread. I probably wont' be able to travel but as DH isn't vaccinated nor likely to be for some time, we won't be travelling. Also we are in strict lockdown that is mostly adhered to, and have a different mindset for the most part. E.g. most people here do not plan to travel abroad this year. Maybe next year......

I had heard the covid vaccine would be an annual vaccine like the flu vaccination. If so I could wait for the next annual one.... in 2022? I don't mind waiting at all. I don't know anyone who has had covid personally. We mostly adhere to lockdown rules apart from socially distanced meeting in gardens twice in the past six months which we aren't supposed to do really.

Yet you work in healthcare...

RoseWineTime · 18/03/2021 00:39

I expect the EMA will announce there is no link tomorrow so hopefully you can stop worrying.
The mixed vaccine trial is relatively small with about 100 in each combination. We are having our antibodies monitored each week so I’m sure the results will get interesting/useful.

Bluenightowl · 18/03/2021 00:41

I don't think meeting parent on their 80th birthday in their garden while keeping more than four metres away from them, for a few mins is any risk tbh.

GreyhoundG1rl · 18/03/2021 00:42

I'm talking about the risk to your patients. From you.

Yes! I wonder if you can say the name of the trial and I can keep up to date with it on the internet?
