We are at the “everyone has been offered” for the age bands shown there though?

nordica · 20/03/2021 19:38

They said on Sky news earlier that uptake in over 65s across the country is at 95%. Is that not the case then looking at the percentages here on page 8? 🤔

With nearly 27 million first doses done and just over 31 million overall in groups 1-9 they've nearly done all those groups now.

Firefliess · 20/03/2021 19:42

@ceeveebee I suspect London is ahead in the 50 somethings because the lower uptake in the older age meant that they got into those ages earlier. Areas with very high uptake in the older ages have been later starting on younger people, whereas I'd heard of 40 somethings getting vaccinated in London for a few weeks now.

ceeveebee · 20/03/2021 20:00

Yep, makes sense @Firefliess
Although I also know many 40s with no conditions in the NW who have been called up- in Trafford and Stockport- in fact my local MSOA has vaccinated nearly 60% of all adults so well ahead too well

MRex · 20/03/2021 20:12

Yes, you're right, I was looking at the 50s groups and getting confused.

the care home staff take up stats tell a story; data from the most recent NHS weekly report

www.england.nhs.uk/statistics/statistical-work-areas/covid-19-vaccinations/ see the Social Care Staff by UTLA tab.

Interesting take on privacy - MSOAs with less than 3 cases numbers suppressed; LSOA case data not shown; yet specific care staff vaccinated numbers can be (less than 10 in the IoS - all first jabbed)

There's talk also about deprived communities in London finding it hard to get to vaccination centres, though I find it hard to believe it's really any harder in London than in rural areas.

I agree. There are plenty of vaccination centres all across London so I do not think people can really use accessibility as an excuse.

The largest vaccination hub in London is Excel Centre in East London. It always (or nearly always) has got availability for next day appointments. Vaccination rates in East London are still low (60% for over 55 for Newham, 66% for Barking and Dagenham, 65% for Tower Hamlets).

I have recently chatted to our office cleaner. He lives within the walking distance to Excel. He was invited for a vaccination several weeks ago but he has been reluctant to take up the offer. I did my best to convince him but I do not think I got too far. He is someone in early 50s, of African origin although has been living in the UK for nearly 30 years. He did not have any rational reasons for his vaccine resistance - he just felt "vaccination that late in life feels unnatural and he might as well take his chances with the virus - he has not got infected so far so he is not too worried".

nordica · 20/03/2021 20:53

The Excel Centre is not very easy to get to (unless you live within walking distance or drive).

MRex · 20/03/2021 20:58

I wouldn't think the Excel is easy to get to unless people are comfortable using the tube or bus right now, it's a long walk from pretty much anywhere. There are a lot of vaccination sites though and it looks to me like they've tried to consider making it easy for deprived communities to access them. My vaccine site was at the bottom of the only large council estate in the area, and perhaps 1/3 BAME attending when I was there. It'll be interesting to see if stats start to change over time, once people know a wider range of family and friends who've had it.

Firefliess · 20/03/2021 21:32

Surely if you're scared enough of Covid to be avoiding buses and tubes, you'd be scared enough to want the vaccination?!! I think people saying that the clinics are too far to get to are in practice reluctant to have the vaccine, and just making excuses because they don't want to have to defend their choices any other how .

wintertravel1980 · 20/03/2021 21:34

The Excel Centre is not very easy to get to.

For many people living in Barking and Dagenham, Newham or Tower Hamlets it is easily reachable by DLR.

I take the point that some people may be unwilling to use public transport though.

It isn't just school students that have returned recently - student outbreaks:

Piggywaspushed · 20/03/2021 21:42

Outbreak at St Andrew's as well.

I doubt many students have returned recently though. Most would either have returned at the start of term, or haven't returned at all.
The only ones I know of who have returned are those who are doing practical subjects like medicine where they need to do some university based work.

I don't know about other unis but I know dd's requests that they test twice a week if they're back, and have done since the start of term. She hasn't gone back though, nor have any of her housemates.

FleeingBlue · 20/03/2021 22:01

London transport has done and continues to do an excellent job of discouraging people from using public transport.

JanFebAnyMonth · 20/03/2021 22:03

I know quite a few who've returned to uni recently?

wintertravel1980 · 20/03/2021 22:33

London transport has done and continues to do an excellent job of discouraging people from using public transport.

But many people have not been discouraged and keep using it.

I commute to the office most of the days. There are still enough passengers in the trains/on the tube. The public transport is nowhere as busy as it was a year ago but life goes on. The picture is very different from the first lockdown. People get on with their lives and their jobs (which cannot be done from home).

lurker101 · 20/03/2021 23:37

Agree with others upthread that a lot of the vaccine centres now in London seem to be placed to help target harder to reach groups - a few I’ve seen recently have been community pharmacies, religious schools etc. The vaccine centre I recently helped at also had a lot of information in multiple languages (Urdu, Gujarati, Punjabi and others) and specific information quoting religious leaders on the need for the vaccine and it’s suitability within Islam.

I’m hopeful that as the global vaccine drive gets going more quickly that this will encourage uptake here amongst those from a minority background. Hopefully as family/friends abroad get vaccinated (often with AZ) this will encourage greater confidence in the vaccine. India’s rollout seems to be going well for example and vaccination seems to be easily obtained for those eligible (anecdotal and info is limited to cities).

MRex · 21/03/2021 06:47

DN was due to return two weeks ago. A few unis have perhaps gone as far as they could online and are fitting the face-to-face time in before the end of term.

InMySpareTime · 21/03/2021 07:36

DS is still not back at halls, but gets the bus into town once a week for a face-to-face tutorial and lab.
He could go back to halls, but doesn't see the point until the pubs are at least outdoor open.

Firefliess · 21/03/2021 07:37

DSD went back to uni on Friday. Her housemates were already back. None of them are doing courses that required them to be back in person - they just decided it would be nice to spend some time together and actually live in the house they're paying rent for. I'd say the majority of students I'm aware of have drifted back over the last few weeks, and that trend will have been fuelled further by the lab based students being called back. So definitely other things too that will be causing the R rate to drift up, apart from schools.

What are peoples' views that we'll have a third wave following the increases across Europe?

Obviously we are way ahead on vaccines but I guess the risk is from mutations

Piggywaspushed · 21/03/2021 13:04

Positives starting to roll in in my school : largely sixth formers.

Piggywaspushed · 21/03/2021 13:07

My DS is at uni. They aren't even allowed to go to the library without testing. Naturally, therefore, he has not been!! If they introduce 'test and you can go to the pub' I think he might comply!

MRex · 21/03/2021 14:55

@NoGoodPunsLeft

For now it looks ok in the UK, the EU are starting our Dec-Feb wave and we know vaccines work on Kent variant. Any wave seems to take about 3 months to build and can only be spotted about 2 months early from suspicious upticks in cases and confirmed 1 month early from the tiny hospital uptick. If there is to be another UK wave, then it wouldn't hit until minimum 2 months away because it isn't showing up. Vaccinations should keep numbers far lower in any future wave, though if we haven't had variant vaccines and children vaccinated by end of autumn then a winter resurgence looks inevitable.

The Breton variant worries me most.
