It does, but it depends on why those 8 were picked out to do the blood sample. Could be that they were the really ill ones or had other health issues or were all over 80.
Also if they initially got a negative covid test, then it could be that if they'd had a positive one, then they'd have different treatment which would have meant they survived.
It's not good, but it may not be as scary as it appears on the face of it.

SunsetGirl · 20/03/2021 08:28

Even early on in the pandemic, we were having cases of people admitted to hospital who were coming up negative on PCR tests, and only tested positive on other bodily fluids (lung, blood).

ceeveebee · 20/03/2021 08:33

The article does say “ Preliminary research results do not indicate the new mutation causes more severe disease or is more contagious than other known variant”
But still doing research

Firefliess · 20/03/2021 08:34

Yes I'd agree with @Margaret that the 8 people who died probably had blood samples etc taken to confirm diagnosis specifically because they were obviously really ill, despite their negative test results. There were probably other people who caught this new variant, teased negative, and had recovered well before anyone would have thought to retest them, which is a huge worry in terms of transmission of course, but means the death rate is nothing like it seems if you only test the very sick.

Firefliess · 20/03/2021 08:42

I continue to think we'll see France added to the UK blacklist for travel soon (with exceptions and testing for lorry drivers)

MRex · 20/03/2021 08:50

@Lalalablahblahblah

Should we be worried that all 8 of them died? That sounds pretty scary
We can't really judge anything yet. With it not turning up on a PCR test, it's understandable that it would be found only due to clearly very unwell people in hospital. They presumably haven't trotted round supermarkets getting blood and tissue members from the general public to confirm asymptomatic prevalence.

I agree about France needing to go on the non-travel list; the spread there of SA variant, Brazil variant, Brittany variant, high cases, few vaccinations... It's a real mess and very concerning. More unaccompanied food shipments needed really, I wonder if supermarkets and other retail are planning for that yet. The potential wastage and additional costs if drivers regularly turn up infected could get difficult.

Firefliess · 20/03/2021 09:06

@Mrex - Do we test lorry drivers in their way into the UK yet? I know that the French started requiring them to test on entry to France back in the autumn when the Kent strain was discovered, but not sure we ever reciprocated (retaliated?) did we? I don't think it's possible to switch quickly to freight moving lorries without drivers coming with it - would require different infrastructure. Most food comes in lorries driven end to end via roll on roll off ferries.

MRex · 20/03/2021 09:34

It sort of doesn't matter because they test, arrive and drop off, collect (if appropriate), then leave. Here are the turnaround times: www.gov.uk/guidance/get-a-coronavirus-covid-19-test-if-youre-an-hgv-or-van-driver.

It's not impossible to switch - just difficult when everyone wants the container lorries and drivers at once, and more expensive to add a container packing stage. The hard part is booking the slots, because perishables can't wait around.

5587 cases 96 deaths

OP posts:
Cornettoninja · 20/03/2021 16:09

Cases are pretty much the same compared to last Saturday then? That’s good isn’t it (taking into consideration schools are open)?

boys3 · 20/03/2021 16:21

Specimen dates in England, yesterday’s look a bit short, but nothing overly concerning at first glance in the figs released today.

Friday 19th

First day of reporting, 1311 cases added. 14% lower than equivalent last week.

Thursday 18th

Second day of reporting, 2414 cases added taking total to 4055, just under 5% lower than equivalent last week.

Wednesday 17th

Third day of reporting, the number added yesterday looked a bit light (1740). Today 735 added, which is up on recent third day numbers. Total so far 4220, still close to 16% lower than equivalent last week. But some way back from the 25% drop that yesterday indicated. With schools back happy to take a 16% decline.

Tuesday 16th

Fourth day of reporting, 154 cases added, taking total to 4741 just under 11% lower than equivalent last week.

wk commencing Monday 15th

Totals 19885 cases so far, compared with equivalent last week of 21846.

North West

Spec date wise added today
Friday 193
Thursday 431, total 607
Wednesday 107, total 450
Tuesday 31, total 771

Wednesday still looks a bit out of kilter???

agree wednesday's figs still seem to be a bit out. I was half expecting a big increase though to compensate which doesn't seem to have happebed

Brilliant!

Lateral Flow number for Friday in England only just over 600,000.

The number reported on Monday for Sunday will be interesting if a general guide from schools on home testing is for one of them to be done ideally on a Sunday.

JanFebAnyMonth · 20/03/2021 16:50

Is this a general guide though @boys3 ? I haven't received anything that says that, either as parent or staff member. Of course it's the logical time to do it so you're probably right, guidance or no guidance.

If anyone actually continues to test.....

Doomsdayiscoming · 20/03/2021 16:52

@MargaretThursday

But numbers have always been higher in the north throughout the last 12 months. Not in December/January. If you look at the regions the 7 day average peak in January per 100k for NW was about 650, NE about 485 and Yorkshire was only 385 whereas the SE peak was around 776 and London was over 1000.

I follow various areas.
My parents' are NW. Their borough was high in November, but then in December and January, they were right down at the bottom end of LittleOwl's wonderful table, I think they were about 280th for ages. Now, despite falling mostly week on week they've been in the top 100 consistently.
Another area I follow is in the SE. They got up to nearly 1000/100k and in the top 50. Now they're under 25k and right down at the bottom of the table.

The north didn't do as big a peak in January, which is when the Kent variation was causing havoc, but has dropped slower since then.

My point was:

More people have had covid in the North than in the South. Therefore when the Kent variant popped up there was a naive population to infect.

The only problem is that there is probably less take up of the vaccine in the North generally. Still, I don’t think it will cause a problem in the North.

Hopefully the government will wake up and vaccinate younger groups in the North before the South, to fully insure against this concern (the Kent variant).

MRex · 20/03/2021 16:52

I'm amazed we still have a tiny drop in cases with an the additional testing, it's great.
