@ILookAtTheFloor

It's not like the HPV vaccine that I will force them to have in their teens.

It won't really benefit them in the long run until what, they're 50+? Objectively speaking. They can have it as an adult etc 16, or whatever it'll be once they reach that age and covid is whatever it becomes in a decade's time.

It will benefit them if they need the vaccine to be able to travel or do certain things, which is likely. It will also benefit them as their education will be less disrupted by school closures and isolation.
ancientgran · 01/04/2021 15:35

The vaccine will indirectly benefit children if it keeps spread down and we can stay out of lockdown. They will be able to go to school, do activities with other children, have a normal life. I think that is a benefit even if the benefit isn't that they don't get symptomatic covid.

TheSunIsStillShining · 01/04/2021 16:38

help needed.

I need to get fully up to date on Modena vaccine within the nnext few hours. Does anyone have links to trials/studies so I don't waste hours on looking through irrelevant stuff?
I will do a search, but want to make sure that I don't miss a key piece of info.

TIA!

BBC News - Coronavirus: Pfizer jab 'stopping 91% of cases in first six months'
www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-56011982
This is really good news on Pfizer jab effecacy. Most significantly it suggests that it works too against the SA variant, even though lab based studies indicated it was less effective at producing antibodies.

Still very much on course for sub 2500 in hospital in the U.K. by 12th April.

Sitting at about 3700 with 12 days to go.

I guess the next question is how low this figure will be by 17th May.

Myfrenchfriend · 01/04/2021 17:37

How about a deal, adults stop using private cars for any journey less than 5 miles

How about living in the real world? Many adults are not capable due to disability of walking short distances never mind 5mls. Some April fool ideas about.

lonelyplanet · 01/04/2021 17:45

Variant data has been updated for the last week. Each looks lower than last week's totals, but I still can't find the information on the over-all percentage being sequenced.

My husband couldn't walk 50 yards without being in absolute agony. He can't carry anything, even carrying a newspaper from a shop to the car will leave him in agony and bedridden for days. Big strong looking bloke as people often tell him when he's in a disabled space.

Last time I looked at the number of different variants as a proportion of the Kent strain that had been found - as that's the dominant one in three UK now, so gives a rough idea of how many they sequenced. But this time they've gone and put N/A by the Kent strain! You could presumably work or out by comparing last week's to this week? It's almost as if they're trying to make it as hard as possible to interpret that data in any meaningful way Angry. Agree that the numbers do kind of look quite low this week, but really hard to know if that's just a reduction in sequencing.

Firefliess · 01/04/2021 19:54

I've realised I'm wrong and they have given the numbers of new Kent strain found via sequencing (on a column that hid off the edge of my screen) If you look at the totals, the SA variant is about 0.27% of all variant cases found (including the Kent strain - so roughly all that are sequenced) but in the most recent data it is 0.08% That is a good fall. Would suggest either that their enhanced track and trace for variants is really working well, or that the SA strain is actually a bit less infectious than our home-grown Kent strain. Or possibly that they were previously identifying foreign variants mainly via targeted sequencing of travellers from high risk counties, and there aren't many people traveling any more since they introduced hotel quarantine.

It's great, if offered take it. You can access MHRA healthcare and recipient info here: www.gov.uk/government/news/moderna-vaccine-becomes-third-covid-19-vaccine-approved-by-uk-regulator.

Anyone know what's going on in Trafford? I saw on twitter they are saying cases almost doubled in the last week. No prison to blame either. Ceeveebee? Any insight?

AnyFucker · 01/04/2021 23:43

Trafford has consistently been one of the Gtr Manchester boroughs with the lowest case rates. Not sure what is happening there, but could just be some “evening out”.

ceeveebee · 01/04/2021 23:51

Not really sure what is happening in Trafford. It’s very much in the younger age groups (and their parents). Anecdotally there is a lot of social mixing going on and I do wonder whether the fact that rates were so low a couple of weeks ago means people relaxed a bit too much.
It does seem to be dipping back down again actually in the last few days (not feeding through to rates yet but reported cases have come back down in the last 3-4 days).

Just saw this message on the dashboard re data updates over Easter - bit similar to Christmas in that not all nations will report every day

“UK cases, deaths and vaccinations will be updated every day throughout the holiday period, with the following service changes:

England: data updated daily
Northern Ireland: no cases and deaths data on 4 April
Scotland: data updated daily
Wales: no data on 2 April and 4 April (note: cases and deaths data released on 5 April and 6 April will both cover 48 hour periods)
UK totals for each day will reflect the sum of the nations which reported data. Cases and deaths that would have been reported during these periods are likely to instead be reported on the following days. As a result, any changes to published data should be interpreted with caution during this period, as they may be a result of changes to reporting schedules.

Testing and capacity metrics will not be updated 2 to 6 April, and data for this period will instead be updated on 7 April.

Healthcare statistics will be published when data are provided by NHS England and NHS Improvement and health authorities in the Devolved Administrations, but may experience interruptions during this period.”

Thanks for this; it looks like a good way to keep track. My numbers are a little different to yours, but I could have made a mistake. It doesn't look like the South African variant is rising significantly, which is good.

@lonely. Have checked again and I think your numbers are right. I must have mis-typed the most recent number. So it's not quite such a positive picture, but pretty stable, which is good considering that we'd expect to be seeing a divergence between the two strains if all else is equal and the SA one was vaccine resistant.

lonelyplanet · 02/04/2021 13:04

This article has lots of data about the South African variant in the UK.

Someone on Twitter has taken a similar approach to looking at the variants of concern as a proportion of each other. And made a nice chart of them twitter.com/TheGazmanRants/status/1377650016966344704?s=19

Frazzled2207 · 02/04/2021 13:17

Anyone worried that uk government might pause Az vaccine? Apparently 22 cases of blood clots now. With over 15million given it it seems to me to be still clearly beneficial overall but the fact that other countries have gone funny about it worries me. It would be a massive backward step if there was any pause or caution over it as we are relying on it more than other countries. Which is probably why it is still all systems go on it tbh.

I do like a colourful graph! None of them seem to be increasing much. My numbers combined the totals for full weeks as the 2 day and then 5 day gaps between releasing data were annoying me. It makes it difficult to compare numbers especially with no previous weeks given as a comparison.

Does anyone have similar information on variants in France? I read an article that suggested the Kent variant was dominant over the South Africanvand Brazilian ones there, but it would be interesting to compare numbers with the UK.
