@babyyodaxmas

Yup that's the weekly average up, I am sure. Opening the schools will do that......
It’s what happens with hospitalisation and deaths as a result that’s key
BunsyGirl · 25/03/2021 17:34

@babyyodaxmas Cases were 6303 last Thursday so not a massive rise.

titchy · 25/03/2021 17:36

Does that include kids doing LFTs though? In which case won't there be some double counting if they then go on to do a PCR?

Hopefully the positives are in younger people and won't lead to increased hospitalisation. I guess we'll find out in two weeks or so.

Sunshinegirl82 · 25/03/2021 17:41

This chart by @RP131 on Twitter breaks down the positives between PCR, LFT and LFT confirmed by PCR which I think is helpful.

babyyodaxmas · 25/03/2021 17:50

No not a massive and absolutely down to LFTs i am sure. Just an observation.

SunsetGirl · 25/03/2021 18:00

@titchy PCR confirmations don't cause double counting.

titchy · 25/03/2021 18:02
@titchy PCR confirmations don't cause double counting.
As long as they're removed from the total once the PCR has been done that should cover it - which I assume is what happens when they report the daily figures?

sirfredfredgeorge · 25/03/2021 18:16

PCR confirmations can cause double counting, because they're only removed if the confirmation if within 3 days. 3 Days since sunday and only 37% have been confirmed so far, confirmation is clearly taking a very long time happen, so some of the people could easily take longer than 3 days (and yes it's specimen date for 3 days, but we only have 1 more days worth of results even for the most delayed post)

So if we have a large number of false positives, or confirmation is taking longer than 3 days, I don't regard the dashboard as remotely accurate any more, and the lack of data about negative PCR after positive LFD appears to be deliberately misleading.

Sidmouth care home with the big outbreak, local TV announced police have made 2 arrests.

Does anyone know if the numbers of genome testing has been ramped up in the last few days? The numbers are still tiny but there was a larger jump up in the South African and Brazilian variant reported today.

I know they've been trying to increase it, but don't know of a sudden hike. Where are you seeing the data on variants?

They were trialling something to mean they can genome test every PCR test within 48 hours. From memory there wasn't really enough info to understand the details nor timeframe, but I'll have a hunt for the article...
JanFebAnyMonth · 25/03/2021 20:24

They only announced it a few days ago, didn't get the impression it was ready to go straight away.

MRex · 25/03/2021 20:38

That's weird news @ancientgran, keep us updated!

They've done so well, all from one woman deciding it was needed and everyone agreeing, and just getting on with it. This is an interesting article on UK genome testing in general: cen.acs.org/analytical-chemistry/sequencing/200000-counting-UK-sequenced-cases/99/web/2021/02.
And this: theconversation.com/qanda-with-sharon-peacock-coronavirus-variant-hunter-154808.
This is her letter about what they've achieved and the next 12 months: www.cogconsortium.uk/an-open-letter-to-the-cog-uk-consortium/. Interestingly they are handing over to become a permanent "national, public health-led sequencing network", with public health and government taking over in the next 6 months and loads of funding bits have already been given for IT storage upgrades etc.

But sorry, I can't find the article. I did find that India has found a more infectious variant including an E484Q (presumably not much different than K etc). So you know, joy.

BBC article on the sidmouth care home . The 2 arrests are for wilful neglect.

Thanks @lonelyplanet

Firefliess · 25/03/2021 22:45

Having dug around on Twitter for information about the different variants, this website seems useful in answering the question on whether sequencing has suddenly increased. vip.politicsmeanspolitics.com/coronavirus/

It seems the numbers being sequenced go up and down a lot, but the latest data from 24 March that includes more of the SA variant than previously, does also seem to include a very large number of the UK (Kent) strain, which suggests the rise could be the result of more sequencing.

MRex · 26/03/2021 06:48

I forgot who asked about testing hauliers, but I gave an incorrect answer because apparently France stopped testing them on 21st Feb. I don't know why the UK government site wasn't updated. Anyway, looks like the UK wants to start testing them now: www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-56531330.

Firefliess · 26/03/2021 07:35

We were discussing a while back about what proportion of hospital "admissions" were in fact already in hospital for something else when they caught Covid. This Guardian article reckons it's one in 7 www.theguardian.com/society/2021/mar/26/40600-people-likely-caught-covid-while-hospital-inpatients-in-england?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Other

JanFebAnyMonth · 26/03/2021 08:18

Are there any data on what percentage of people admitted to hospital for non Covid subsequently acquire infection whilst an inpatient? I suppose that would require tracking after discharge for 10 days as well.

lonelyplanet · 26/03/2021 08:37

Thanks for this link. I couldn't find the back data so have been recording myself, but it is all here! It would be really interesting to know whether there has been an increase in the sequencing. I agree about the increase in the Kent strain from about 16000 last week to 20000 this week. Could that be down to more infections in children who may be more likely to show symptoms with the Kent variant?
MRex · 26/03/2021 08:44

There are several different hospital stats:
1 - Admitted for covid
2 - Admitted for something else and found to also have covid
3 - Caught covid in hospital and still there
4 - Caught covid in hospital but discharged before / after finding out about the infection.

Hospital stats separate 1 + 2 from 3. The Guardian are unclear if their stat is just 3 or 3 + 4. I don't think I've seen each bit fully broken out.
