Everyone is simply less fit in winter, and fitness is the biggest correlation with outcomes, you don't need to look further for the covid correlation there.

You can of course look at why fitness is worse in winter (less vitamin D, less incidental exercise as you're indoors more, gyms being closed due to lockdown etc.) but don't need to look for deeper correlation to covid outcomes.

ancientgran · 24/03/2021 12:14

Yes I remember the TB as well but I think I was about 14 so not quite so traumatic as the polio although I think in some ways the no nonsense approach at school might not have been that bad. The nuns certainly didn't pander to people making a fuss, you'd get told to behave yourself rather than sympathy.

It must have been traumatic to some extent as I remember it so vividly but the thing I remember most about the polio epidemics in the 50s is being terrified of being in an iron lung, dying wasn't nearly as scary.

I think that's why there aren't many anti-vaccers in your age group - they remember the very real threats of serious illnesses. People my age and younger only know about these things secondhand, it's not so real to us. Easier to be complacent and say "oh, I never get ill"

DH was volunteering at our local GP vaccination hub today. He says they've cancelled tomorrow's session because not enough people booked in. I think they're trying to mop up the last of Group 6 and the over 50s, but apparently most have booked online instead (or don't want to be vaccinated) I guess that makes sense to get the doses remaining out to other areas if there are over 50s still waiting there.

Doomsdayiscoming · 24/03/2021 14:21

@Firefliess

Yes, I think if this continues, it will be a free for all next. Just anyone 18-50 will be able to book. Once supply is secured and it looks like the second doses will be covered.

MRex · 24/03/2021 14:23

@Firefliess - that's awful to cancel a session, why can't they invite 45-49yo to fill up the slots just for that day?

Frazzled2207 · 24/03/2021 14:32

@MRex
according to that leaked letter from a week ago they definitely weren't supposed to though reading the threads on here plenty of 40s are now being called up. Hopefully less chance of doses going to waste this way anyway?

ifonly4 · 24/03/2021 15:23

Is there a site which records the daily figures for LFDs?

Frazzled2207 · 24/03/2021 15:29

the government dashboard - if you click on England - shows how many of that day's positives are LFDs and how many of those turn positive via PCR.
No figures for the other 3 nations but not sure they're using them as they are in England

Firefliess · 24/03/2021 15:56

I certainly know plenty of 45-49 year olds who'd be biting their hands off for a jab. But yes I assume it's in response to the government request that they don't go below 50 until everywhere has caught up. It does seem unfair when you see threads on here with plenty 40+s (or even younger) being called up in other areas. I don't think they've gone to waste though - I think that was why they cancelled it, to make sure they didn't.

That's a good point, I hadn't thought of it like that. Polio and small pox were the big outbreaks I remember.

On local news they have announced some large vaccine hubs are closing for the first two weeks in April. Locally it is West Point where I got my jab, they said people due for 2nd dose would be contacted and either offered an earlier date or alternative venue.

ancientgran · 24/03/2021 16:11

Lots of age groups on heat map have changed from yellow to green, some now blue. One death in local hospital announced.

Slight delay to dashboard figures today

NI Heath Minister just giving an update live on BBC newsstream now and was asked about opening up over 40s vaccinations, and said he expects it in the next couple of weeks, so hopefully England will be a similar timeline and they have been “cautious” 🤞

Slight delay to dashboard figures today
Coincidentally on the same day that Matt Hancock announces that the new UK Health Security Agency will start work on 1st April (irony no doubt lost on him). Lots of briefings to be read and digested before any dashboard can be updated. Smile

It would appear that the Covid Dashboard Lead is retiring today.

Bet the dashboard is late because they are having leaving drinks ;-) (virtual, obv...)

ceeveebee · 24/03/2021 17:26

5,605 cases / 98 deaths

ceeveebee · 24/03/2021 17:34

@PatriciaHolm

Here is the conversation yesterday with Pouriaa's answer.

I suspect the confusion comes from the fact the "home" LFTs don't "count", not quite in the same way that lab tests do. They are treated rather oddly in that they all appear in the data, but obviously can be overridden by a negative PCR so in terms of date, the actual date of positive is deemed now to be the confirmatory PCR, now we are at a point where we are doing 1.5m+ LFTs a day some days.

If someone has 2 positive PCRs, the first PCR is the date that counts.

I am 99.999% convinced that the date used is the original LFD date Look at the attached screenshots.

Yesterday for 19th March, we had 382 confirmed and 561 unconfirmed, a total of 943

Today for 19th March we have 429 confirmed and 514 unconfirmed. - total of 943

Same goes for 18th March. 20th is out by 1

It can’t be coincidental.

Piggywaspushed · 24/03/2021 17:38

Today , it literally feels like 5604 of the cases are at my school Sad

Piggywaspushed · 24/03/2021 17:39

I am not convinced all of my students will go and get a PCR done, juts treat the LFT as 'truth'. I wonder if positive cases will get lost from the headcount this way? It's a bit bewldering.

sirfredfredgeorge · 24/03/2021 17:43

So the 2200 LFD without positive PCR has become 1823, for sunday, so now a least 72 hours after those tests only 438 have been confirmed.

Either we have a very high false positive rate, or people are isolating for a long time waiting for a confirmatory test.

Why are PCR's taking so long to come back? or why are people not confirming (the problem with this is that the contacts will be getting very annoyed with people who don't confirm, so you'll get more peer pressure not to test at all)

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 24/03/2021 17:44

I’d be really interested to read any information on the “tolerance” limits for cases and deaths now the government narrative is very much “we need to live with Covid”
I wonder how many cases and deaths will be seen as being “acceptable” and how far we are away now that the most vulnerable have had their first jab.

PatriciaHolm · 24/03/2021 17:46

@ceeveebee Yes I see what you mean. It does seem that way from those numbers doesn't it. Maybe I'll tweet Pouriaa and ask....

Piggywaspushed · 24/03/2021 17:47

But the message with school LFTs , fred is that you isolate regardless of the PCR. So, I think lots won't bother with the PCR.

That’s only for tests taken in school though isn’t it? For home tests they can be cancelled out by a PCR? And I think we thought that by Sunday 21st they would all be at-home tests?
PatriciaHolm · 24/03/2021 17:51

@Piggywaspushed

But the message with school LFTs , fred is that you isolate regardless of the PCR. So, I think lots won't bother with the PCR.
From this week though, in schools a negative PCR after a positive LFT would now let you out of isolation. So people testing positive from LFTs from the weekend onwards are supposed to get confirmation from PCRs as a negative PCR does now get you out of isolation.

Maybe that message hasn't got across clearly enough?
