Looks like Europe may have got their way

India have let us down.

The reports about delays from India are completely at odds with AZ’s declaration that there are no issues with UK supplies. What is the truth?

Dongdingdong · 18/03/2021 07:23

I have had my 1st dose, but obviously I'm keeping that quiet from people in RL as I know (& understand completely) that people are feeling it's unfair.

I don’t feel it’s unfair at all - pleased for you. The more people who get vaccinated the safer we ALL are.

ChameleonClara · 18/03/2021 07:23

@WhereDoWeGo

Thanks ChameleonClara That's really kind of you!

I wanted to give my dose to somebody I know who has asthma (but obviously you can't do that)

I have told my mum. She was dreadfully worried about having hers & convinced she will turn into a zombie all on her own .. I phoned her on my way out of the vaccine centre & told her I will be zombie-ing along with her a few weeks later!

If you've had your first dose I am sure you will get your second so should be fine. They don't want to mess up second doses as that wastes time and money.

Az will be being used for 2nd doses.

serum institute of India AZ would have been this “bumper 3m/week” that they were banging on about for ages.

Oblomov21 · 18/03/2021 07:29

I too am confused. As to what the problem is.

BBC thus link makes it sound like various problems: India, Ursula von leyer from EU refusing shipments. And other problems.

It's not clear to me. Please can someone explain in simplistic terms.

Motorina · 18/03/2021 07:32

@Oblomov21 it's not clear to anyone, because the information hasn't been shared. But there's more information in this more recent BBC article. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-56438629

Dongdingdong · 18/03/2021 07:32

@Oblomov21 I don’t think anyone knows for sure just yet - the reports are contradictory. AZ claiming there’s no disruption to UK supply chains but reports of a production delay from India being one example.

Dongdingdong · 18/03/2021 07:36

Useful article, thanks @Motorina.

If the EU does block exports it won’t be for them to sit in a warehouse - it will be to use them to vaccinate the vulnerable and elderly in the EU. The companies will still get paid so I doubt they will care where the vaccine goes as long as the money pours in. It’s vaccine nationalism but this is also what the U.K. are engaging with no export of vaccinations.

The U.K. is now reporting vaccinating those who are not vulnerable and under 50. The EU has many vulnerable and elderly not vaccinated. This move would likely save many lives if it were to go ahead.

It seems from the U.K. perspective the biggest upset is that they won’t be able to win the race to come first in vaccinating their nation and showing how awesome they are and how great Brexit is and how crap the EU are and bury the absolute shambles they made of the pandemic right up to when they started to vaccinate.

Personally as someone in the EU I would back a move to give the U.K. enough vaccines to do their second doses only and then use all other vaccines on the vulnerable in EU.

EpiphanySoul1 · 18/03/2021 07:44

I should also note that EU is entering a thud wave and with low levels of vaccines many more people may die and hospitals become over whelmed. Cases and deaths in the U.K. have dropped significantly since the vulnerable were vaccinated.

MarshaBradyo · 18/03/2021 07:46

If you are talking about AZ it’s at cost.

The EU’s goal is to force India to produce more vaccines for export despite India’s cases rising. The UK is a red herring. Note Ursula never mentioned which countries were at fault - she did that deliberately because her target is the Indian AZ plants which were meant to produce mass produce foreign vaccines by April. She can’t be upfront about that because the UN would get involved and she’d get even more bad press.

We often get told we don't understand the EU and its true for many people.

This posts shows that you have fallen for a lot of the crap written within the EU & know sweet f.a about the UK

Oh, we’ll still be streets ahead of the EU with our roll-out even with this reported delay. We’re still on target to give everyone in groups 1-9 (that’s 32 million people) a 1st dose by mid April and will be easing lockdown restrictions around then too. Meanwhile Italy is heading back into lockdown for the third time.

The EU has many vulnerable and elderly not vaccinated.

And whose fault is that?

A good old dose of you’re all crap but stop so we can improve.
EpiphanySoul1 · 18/03/2021 07:51

@MarshaBradyo Pfizer.

@GrumpyHoonMain I hadn’t seen that in anything I’ve read - what site and I’ll have a read but this thread is specifically about EU stopping vaccines to U.K. so I replied on that basis that I don’t think it’s a bad thing. Lots of vaccine nationalism going on in the U.K. and US also

Well the issue is AZ atm

Quartz2208 · 18/03/2021 07:52

I wonder as well with the NHS letter how much it is saying no more dropping down the lists to the under 50s - everything in the roadmap is about making sure every over 50 is offered by the 15th April. A lot of places seem to have gone off script on this and offered under at the expense of others in that group. I think this is as well a diplomatic way to say you cant do that it needs to go to the over 50s.

EpiphanySoul1 · 18/03/2021 07:52

@Dongdingdong brilliant! That’s great. So if this blockage wouldn’t make a difference to the U.K. winning the race which is so important to them and it will mean the EU can vaccinate the vulnerable and elderly which is important to them sounds like a great idea for everyone!

Wakeupin2022 · 18/03/2021 07:53

It's been obvious for the last couple of months that this was going to happen.

Countries could have acted to prevent it and they didn't.

What do you expect us to do?

The UK can only supply the EU a handful of AZ vaccines that wouldn't even make a dent given the EU population.

Dongdingdong · 18/03/2021 07:54

@EpiphanySoul1 eh? What sounds like a great idea for everyone?

doireallyneedaname · 18/03/2021 07:57

Seemingly it’s to do with supply issues at the Indian plant.

If an area has offered the vaccine to all over 50s and vulnerable then of course they should move on to the next age group(s) if they have vaccines available. Should they have let vaccines go to waste waiting for hesitant people in groups 1-9 to change their minds rather than crack on vaccinating 40somethings who are really keen to have theirs?

Obviously if there’s a shortage of vaccines for second doses then priority needs to go to the most vulnerable groups but that hasn’t been the case until now.

The doses won't be wasted as they are needed for second vaccinations.
