Vaccine supply about to significantly reduce

Looks like Europe may have got their way

OP posts:

I think this makes the decision not to roll out by occupation look more misguided. We all know people who didn't critically need the vaccine so soon but have had it (my two siblings, who both WFH for example). On the other hand, teachers and other frontline workers, like myself, who really need vaccine protection both for themselves and to hopefully slow the spread, now have to wait even longer.

manicinsomniac · 17/03/2021 21:12

Actually, just reading that some in their 40s have had it already in some places! Definitely not happening where I live. Mid 50s are starting to be done/have imminent appointments. Some earlier 50s have appointments.

I think our best chance of beating lockdowns and recovering normality is to make sure that everybody vulnerable in this country has 2 doses and then get vaccines to poorer countries that are badly hit. Before we do our under 50, healthy population. I'm not suggesting that poorer countries without a significant Covid problem (the Polynesian islands or many African countries for example) should be prioritised over us when we have such a huge Covid problem. But by helping countries that do have a lot of cases we will also be helping ourselves.

jasjas1973 · 17/03/2021 21:14

@Wakeupin2022 at last a sensible post!

I don't disagree with much of what you say but as i ve said before, if the EU had done similar to the UK, we'd have less and they'd have more.

All the EU are saying is that if countries block vaccine to them, they will reciprocate and i'm sure if the boot was on the other foot, MN would be full of threads demanding we bloc vaccine to europe.

We share the same continent, surely its not beyond us to help each other out? a mainland where CV runs freely, will not help us at all.

3asAbird · 17/03/2021 21:15

Seems like postcode lottery.

No fan daily mail but least some clues into what issue is.

Phizer supplies.
We supposed get moderna 2 weeks if it doesn't get blocked as thought it was bottled in Spain and Italy blocked az that was bottled in Italy.

Feeling really low tonight.
Reassuring I'm not the only one who had my hopes up.
I know a few people in 40s locally who been vaccinated granted some are nhs or carers.
But don't think all are.

Avondklok · 17/03/2021 21:16

It's Pfizer not Phizer!

mondaywine · 17/03/2021 21:21

I do wonder if people’s working situation influences how you feel about delays. If you’re in your late 40s wfh you will feel very differently to someone of a similar age who is in a public facing role such as the police, supermarkets or schools I would imagine.

sleepwouldbenice · 17/03/2021 21:22

I feel low too and there's nothing wrong with that
Husband is 52 got him booked in for friday
I am 50 in 3 months and volunteer at a clinic.....oh the ironyGrin
I don't begrudge anyone who has had it from any age or profession
But my teeth are starting to grind at the repeated bookings some postcodes for those in their 40s and 30s....
But I will get over it

namechangefail2020 · 17/03/2021 21:22

I wonder what this means for lockdown? Any thoughts? So worried about my business opening and timelines being pushed back again. Also gutted as I thought maybe I would be soon (nearly 40) but looks like not for ages now. God this sucks ass so much

nonono1 · 17/03/2021 21:23

I wonder what this means for lockdown? Any thoughts? So worried about my business opening and timelines being pushed back again.

I would also like to know the answer to this. When are they going to tell us? Businesses need clarity.

nordica · 17/03/2021 21:24

I can't see it affecting the end of lockdown in any way. I think we've always known there'll be a time when no one really cares if the under 50s catch covid or not, and looks like that time will come mid April onwards...

duffeldaisy · 17/03/2021 21:24

If they’re going to do that - freeze the rollout while catching up, or for giving vaccines to countries who need them, then they need to let parents have choice of home-schooling without de-registration if they’d feel safer, to reduce class sizes and so protect everyone as much as possible.

As others have said, it wasn’t so bad knowing we could watch the numbers up to Easter and cope with that, but once people have all met up and mixed, that means cases will spread again. It’s hard to readjust to the new risk.

greenlynx · 17/03/2021 21:27

@Dongdingdong
Well I don’t know what evidence do you want. A photo of my DD? She’s in group 6 for 2 reasons and hasn’t vaccinated yet and hasn’t got any messages from GP. They confirmed that she’s in group 6 and said to wait. 2 of her friends (different GP surgery) were vaccinated today so I’m hopeful. A lot of Mums in my FB group still are not vaccinated as the system is quite complicated for unpaid carers.
You can’t imagine how cross I’m when Hancock is reporting such a glorious picture and nearly finishing group 9 whereas I have 16 y.o. from group 6 at home who’s going to school every day.

nonono1 · 17/03/2021 21:28

or for giving vaccines to countries who need them

WE need them for gods sake! As is frequently pointed out, the UK has one of the highest death rates from Covid in the world. I don’t believe the Tories would halt our programme to give our vaccines to other countries. It would be political suicide.

MarshaBradyo · 17/03/2021 21:30

giving vaccines to countries who need them

Is this the reason for change?

nonono1 · 17/03/2021 21:31

Is this the reason for change?

I don’t think anyone knows the reason do they?

I also don’t agree that this latest news won’t delay the easing of lockdown. It almost certainly will Sad

I’m more concerned about the numbers going back up over the next few weeks putting a spanner in the works for April 12th. Once cases start rising again we risk a disruption to the plans.
donewithitalltodayandxmas · 17/03/2021 21:33

@greenlynx I think I'm group 6 ? I booked online through national system and got mine Friday , i received a text message only this week suggesting I book , didn't wait for dr just went online and booked myself

PrincessNutNuts · 17/03/2021 21:34

I know a few group 6s who haven't had their first dose yet because they're waiting for their surgery to get supplies, and aren't enabled to book on the National system.

And some group 7s in their 60s who haven't had their first dose yet either. (One is booked in for next week.)

I just hope they do the second doses. My elderly relatives from JCVI group 1 are due in April.

Avondklok · 17/03/2021 21:34

"Von der Leyen said the EU had received more than 300 requests for overseas vaccine shipments over the past six weeks and refused just one, and the bloc had exported 41m doses to 33 countries.
“This shows that Europe is trying to make international cooperation work,” she said. “But open roads run in both directions … It is hard to explain to our citizens why vaccines produced in the EU are going to other countries that are also producing vaccines, but hardly anything is coming back.”
Von der Leyen said the bloc had exported 10m doses to the UK in the past six weeks, making it “country number one as far as exports from the EU is concerned”.
But while the UK was producing AstraZeneca vaccines, and “there are even two sites in the UK that are in our contract for potential deliveries for the EU … we’re still waiting for doses to come from the UK. So this is an invitation for reciprocity.”
The majority of vaccines exported from the EU to the UK have been made by Pfizer, which distributes globally from its European production sites. The EU has blocked only one export request, a shipment of 250,000 Oxford/AstraZeneca doses from Italy to Australia."

duffeldaisy · 17/03/2021 21:35

We did sign up to the Covax agreement though, to do just that.

If we went entirely for ourselves then, beside the ethics of letting it burn through populations, long-term it could be dangerous for the whole world if it mutates into something the vaccines don’t cover.

There are sensible reasons for pausing vaccines along the way, but it’s the lack of doing anything else to stop spread in schools that bothers me.

JustDespair · 17/03/2021 21:35

@kittensarecute

You are struggling to cope as soon as someone even touches on the subject. I think you should unfollow the thread and sit down with a cup of tea. It will do you no good seeing randoms on the internet talking about this, we just don't know what will happen yet.

I’m not sure - it might not if we’re still on track for the initial target dates?
happypuppymummy · 17/03/2021 21:35

I'm 50 in April. Gutted to be honest.
