There's not a Devon variant yet to be identified is there??

JanFebAnyMonth · 11/03/2021 22:58

Sorry not a very "Data"comment, but those outbreaks are hard to explain from current knowledge of vaccine efficiency and uptake, aren't they?

HSHorror · 11/03/2021 23:59

I think though that if say you are very elderly even a non hospital illness could be enough.

Also all vaxxed including staff noone will have symptoms until some get very ill. So relying on asymptomatic testing.

ancientgran · 12/03/2021 00:09

@Quarantino thanks for finding that, it wasn't on their site when I was looking. I was seriously starting to wonder if I imagined it.

I think it is the Sidmouth and Exmouth ones that are worrying. I don't think the ones in Torquay would have been picked up without regular testing but it is a bit different where people are seriously ill and dying. I was wondering what was happening in Torbay as the number of the very elderly, over 80s I think, has gone up this week with the heat map going from yellow to green.

There are two dead now at the Sidmouth care home. I'm not sure what the police investigation is about if they were confirmed covid cases. I wonder if they will start an investigation at the Exmouth home.

I did hear one of the dead residents at the Exmouth home was 107 so I suppose it would take a toll even with the vaccination.

It would be strange if there was a Devon variant as we have had such low numbers but I suppose you only need one successful mutation and its off

It has made me feel more anxious about it all.

ancientgran · 12/03/2021 00:15

I meant to say the prison outbreak in Devon is Exeter Prison. It is an old prison, Victorian I think, so I bet the facilities aren't great. I used to know a priest who visited someone there and he never seemed very happy to be going there.

I thought it would be Dartmoor but I think they had an outbreak at Christmas.

MRex · 12/03/2021 06:04

@JanFebAnyMonth

I wouldn't say so yet. One of those who died was having end of life care, the other was 107. Covid may be a cause of death, but it is not necessarily the primary cause of death. We also know that take-up wasn't 100%, either or both of those people might not have been vaccinated. It does seem odd that the police have been involved.
Pastanred · 12/03/2021 07:26

A lot of prison cases are due to testing on arrival rather than transmission inside

All prisoners are tested when they first arrive and with symptoms after

Testing is very much widely available and encouraged (dh is an officer)

Pastanred · 12/03/2021 07:26

Meaning majority don’t have symptoms so not recessarily more than outside who just aren’t tested

Pastanred · 12/03/2021 07:28

ALso an outbreak in a prison is ‘2 cases in two different areas’ so not always huge numbers

cathyandclare · 12/03/2021 08:18

There is a local prison outbreak- the MSOA for Wetherby is now over 1,100 per 100000. I'd noticed our local MSOA has gone up recently, so I wonder if that's staff members or contacts (we're close but a different MSOA).

Firefliess · 12/03/2021 08:19

That's interesting re prisons @pastanred. Would explain why the government isn't so bothered about vaccinating prisons (not just political cowardice) I guess a lot of people coming into prison are coming from chaotic and not exactly rule-complying circumstances, so the rates on admission could be quite high. Prisons have a younger age demographic than pretty much any other institution (except boarding schools) so most prisoners won't be vaccinated yet.

The care home outbreaks are sad. But I wonder if we should try and look at the statistics on care home outbreaks rather than these individual cases? It may be that the very reason these are hitting the headlines is because it is now quite unusual to have big outbreaks at care homes. Before vaccination it was so common it hit no headlines - the exceptions that prove the rule so to speak.

Quarantino · 12/03/2021 08:23

The article on the Exmouth home said they'd all been vaccinated in January, so it won't be lack of takeup.

ancientgran · 12/03/2021 08:39

Local news said the Exmouth home residents were vaccinated on 18th January.

JanFebAnyMonth · 12/03/2021 08:43

But @Pastanred, we know from the media reports that these outbreaks are many more than two cases.

Yes, re care home outbreaks, I was just thinking, maybe these are isolated examples of why we'll need to continue some measures long after all are vaccinated.

On home testing for secondary students and all school households: I can't see many bothering to do it, after the first time (if they even get that far). It's a massive faff, quite apart from the discomfort factor. I can't see any but the most dedicated, stable, educated families doing it twice a week, every week. (I'm a member of school staff.)

JanFebAnyMonth · 12/03/2021 08:53

(and have just done my second home test!)

sirfredfredgeorge · 12/03/2021 09:32

I assume normal care home outbreak for other respiratory disease outbreaks is still happening? ie they have confirmed it's not a flu or similar that entered the care home at the same time as the covid?

PollyRoulson · 12/03/2021 10:45

Outbreak in relatives care home. All reidents were vaccinated on 15th Jan. 13 days later the first case and they are still getting new cases. Last new case was yesterday.

Firefliess · 12/03/2021 12:17

Latest ONS survey is out. www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/healthandsocialcare/conditionsanddiseases/bulletins/coronaviruscovid19infectionsurveypilot/12march2021

The age group analysis is interesting - rates falling in all age groups over 25, but broadly flat for all ages of children and also the 16-25 age group. I wonder if that's mainly due to vaccination - fewer 16-25 year olds will have been vaccinated via having health conditions or being key workers than in the middle aged groups.

MRex · 12/03/2021 13:41

It doesn't matter if the residents get covid unless they get poorly, it's a big ask for an elderly immune system to entirely fight off infection without symptoms. I don't feel like we have enough information overall about the figures from care homes where there could be multiple infections, healthy people testing positive, unvaccinated, end of life care patients etc.
bathsh3ba · 12/03/2021 16:06

6,609 cases (down 7.3%)
175 deaths (down 35.4%)
575 hospital admissions (down 27.5%)

Tests up by 73.5%, presumably school testing, which I think puts the relatively higher case number in context.

Vaccination numbers:
First dose: 23,314,525
Second dose: 1,445,078

Frazzled2207 · 12/03/2021 16:15

there have been c. 1000 positive LFTs in each day this week (which are included in the case numbers), far more than previously and that will be mainly school driven. Some of those will turn into positive PCRs, many won't.
Not surprising the numbers have taken a slight upward turn.

ancientgran · 12/03/2021 16:20

One of the experts, think it might have been JVT, said in one interview that in the older groups it would take longer than 3 weeks for the full benefits of the vaccine to kick in. Perhaps that is part of the reason for the care home problems.

ancientgran · 12/03/2021 16:21

Third death announced at the Sidmouth home. Very sad when they have been kept safe all year.

lurker101 · 12/03/2021 16:38

@Frazzled2207 sorry if I’ve missed it, but if say 600 (random number) of those LFT positives are PCR negatives, would the case numbers be reduced down, or due to the fact that there has been a positive test mean it still qualifies for inclusion in the numbers?
