Deflated after tonights press conference

Hi,

Was starting to feel a bit more positive - a bit lighter, but it sounds as though people are already behaving like we're out of lockdown, according to latest hotspot data.

I felt a difference earlier today when walking the dogs. I noticed there were bigger groups together, likely not the same household. I haven't seen this in such bulk for months.

Please someone tell me this is just a blip.

While taking my son for our daily walk today we walked past our local play park and there were about 30 people there. Parents with children, the children playing together, the parents sitting together chatting. What is wrong with people? Now the weather's warmer and there's only a week of homeschooling left, it seems a lot of people don't think they need to social distance anymore. Makes me so annoyed and also makes me feel bad for my son who asked me why I don't let him play with his friends at the park :-(

I’ll listen to JVT rather than the ‘experts’ on Mumsnet! He told it as it was as the press conference! We aren’t out of the woods yet but if we stick to the guidance over the next couple of months we might just be heading in the right direction!

Moondust001 · 26/02/2021 21:34

This is accurate but not many want to hear it. We might get lucky... unlike last year!

You mean "accurate" in the sense that it is totally made up? Because the actual evidence says that the current vaccines may be slightly less effective against the known variants, and even if they are, they still work effectively to reduce serious cases and deaths. The main reason many people, including scientists and medical people, don't want to hear it is because it is not true.

It is certainly possible that the virus might mutate into some scary Ebola like infection that kills most things in it's path. It's actually quite unlikely because a virus that transmits easily and doesn't kill the majority of people is, by scientific definition, the more effective one. It's also possible that we will be wiped out as race after a hitherto unknown asteroid hits us in August. Or that intelligent apes will take up arms against us and change the face of civilisation. But is we spend our entire lives fixating on what could possibly go wrong, we will still end up dead one day, but never having lived before we do.

Some people are really enjoying lockdowns far too much.

I guess some of them are unable to mind their own business.

It will be my business if one of those parents has the virus, passed it on to others today and I catch it when my son goes back next week.

We're still supposed to be in lockdown. That is my point.
BonnieDundee · 26/02/2021 21:39

I despair! People outside in the fresh air enjoying the nice weather. What is the world coming to? Grin

I seem to remember the scientists not that long ago telling us that the risk was minimal outside

ImAllOut · 26/02/2021 21:39

EvieBoo2 do you live in a really high case area? Because if you don't your risk of catching covid playing in the park is slim to none. There is so much hysteria on here. Let kids play together, this is outrageous.

Lynora · 26/02/2021 21:40

I get the feeling that some people on MN are loving the doom and gloom and whenever things start to look a bit more positive they can't cope with it.

I'm going to live my life now. I've given up a year of it and I'm not giving up any more.

Thisseatisnotavailable · 26/02/2021 21:40

I noticed there were bigger groups together, likely not the same household. I haven't seen this in such bulk for months. - that never stopped around where I live.

There's an outdoor gym also, which always has upwards of about 10 people working out there together. I was out last Saturday and saw two different groups of men playing basketball in the parks.

We are still in lockdown. People are not meant to be mixing in large groups.
Katie517 · 26/02/2021 21:42

We had similar nonsense talk last year when people “flocked” to the beaches cases didn’t rise. It came out this week that no cases had been linked to people going to the beach, outside transmission is very rare.

People are out enjoying the sun, getting fresh air and getting their backsides off their sofas. Protecting the NHS by shutting yourself inside, eating junk and not moving is a cliche in itself. We need to be outside, we need to be running around and moving. The press conference was typical behavioral psychology to try and get people to comply. The be all and end all is deaths and hospital admissions are dropping, the vaccinations are protecting the vulnerable even after one dose, people know this so will drop their guard.

No one is enjoying lockdown, this is such a childish remark.

Your post contains many exagerrated comparisons - Ebola, asteroids, intelligent apes...

There is risk of a variant that the vaccine is not effective against. Hopefully that won't happen. There is no predicting whether any variant that comes along will be better, or worse. This is not news.

BlackBrowedAlbatross · 26/02/2021 21:44

To be fair, they have said all along that vaccination alone is not going to solve this. Lots of people seem not to have heard that though.

Even if vaccination alone could solve it, not even 1% of the population are fully vaccinated yet, with about another 25% half way there. Still a long way to go. 1 in 5 areas have cases going up at the moment, in spite of lockdown. Sage's advice that was published the other day was that opening up over three months from April could cause hospitalisation numbers worse than the peak in January. So naturally the govt decided to open schools full time to all pupils in March. Why anyone believes or trusts Boris Johnson after what happened December-January defeats me.

loulouljh · 26/02/2021 21:45

People outside enjoying themselves..whatever next!!!!!

OldRailer · 26/02/2021 21:46

I heard part of this and felt it was hopeful.

But yes we need to keep on distancing. However the risks outdoors are minimal so I'm glad if kids in particular are out in the parks.

It's always going to happen whenever the sun comes out. People think the rules don't apply in nice weather, for some reason.

Why is it that whenever anyone is realistic they get accused of 'enjoying lockdown and wanting hospital deaths'? It's ridiculous, of course no one enjoys lockdown and restrictions.

Being cautious and recognising the government is repeating mistakes and giving out false hope is sensible. It's precisely because people care about reducing hospital deaths that we aren't planning for this magical summer we're being told is possible.

You missed out "... in the middle of a national lockdown." Lockdown isn't over yet. The first step out if it starts on March 8th.
Dementedswan · 26/02/2021 21:50

I'm worried, cv parent of two primary children and in a rising case area. No vaccine in sight either...

@Munkeenut

I went for my weekly shop today and the place was swarming with elderly, you can tell they feel free to go out now they've had the vaccine. It was like a zombie apocalypse of slow moving 70+ year olds blocking every aisle. I'm.not a massive lockdown fan but I've done and am doing whats being asked of me, to protect others. Shame they couldn't return the favour.
Those pesky old people out shopping. Let the fuckers starve I say.
