If they open up schools all at once, I'm done with every other precaution

If the 'leak' is true and they are stupid enough to open up all schools to all kids at the same time (thus leading to uncontrolled transmission of variants and increased risk of vaccine escape, further lockdowns and a redo of the vaccination programme) then I'm done with any kind of compliance.

I'm not staying at home like a fucking stupid sitting duck, waiting for my kids to come home with Covid anymore. The kids can see their friends, have sleepovers and we'll go out and about and visit friends and relatives and do the maximum we can.

You can pile in and call me selfish or whatever - I genuinely don't care anymore. I'm not putting my life on hold just for the government to fuck the recovery up again. I'm the most compliant of pretty much everyone I know but this is it for me, and many others I suspect (most of whom are already doing way more than me). If it's safe for my kids to go to school, then everything is safe.

This attitude oh we can do x but I can't do y! What you tell me I can x but it's not safe to y huff huff I find really annoying and disingenuous

We all know how it works by now, they try to limit all other activity to allow things to open.

People being deliberately obtuse and breaking all the rules will just prolong the whole shit show.

That's my concern.

What's inevitable though is that some of these people who take that approach will be some of the first to be moaning if their child's bubble bursts and they have to isolate, probably writing threads like:
AIBU to think the teachers should be doing more. DC's bubble has burst and it's apparently because one of their class has covid. DC has been to sleepovers, and we've seen our extended family and nobody in our family has covid, so it clearly something going on in school. AIBU to think that they shouldn't be sending a bubble home all the time. This is the 3rd time it's happened this term. What ARE teachers actually doing? Supermarket workers and NHS staff are getting on with their jobs without bubbles closing.

HauntedPencil · 22/02/2021 21:46

As I'm in Wales I've an infant DC that's gone back - and I feel this means I have less need to "break the rules" as she's seeing friends at school.

Totally agree
Gerberageri · 22/02/2021 23:44

Well that's the most ridiculous thing I've read.

Schools are very controlled environments, primaries anyway. My son is with maximum 60 kids but only goes close to a small fraction of that. Kids don't spread the virus as much as adults. Going to school, a clean environment with good ventilation for a few hours a day is far less risky than having a sleepover.

Adults mix far more than children, you can go out with another adult, go to work with them, be in a supermarket with loads of others.

Children going to school is comparable with the amount of movement and mixing that adults currently have on average if you take into account workplaces.

If people are kicking off about schools being open, why not kick off about your local takeaway or supermarket - because all of them around here have had Covid cases.

Silverthorny · 22/02/2021 23:58

What?? It’s vital that children get their education, of course that should be the first priority as we return to some sense of normality. Why can’t we just follow the advice of intelligent, medical professionals instead of thinking we know better. You are no better than the kid who went up to Whitty calling him a liar with that attitude...

100% agree with this. The longer this goes on for the more I realise that some people are so inherently self-absorbed and genuinely don't care about anyone else, or wider society as a whole. I used to think that it was ignorance or misjudgement, but it's not. It's just some people cannot look past the end of their own nose.

Silverthorny · 23/02/2021 07:19

@MacDuffsMuff Agree. Typified by a mid thirties friend of mine. Thought the rules didn’t apply to her, caught Covid, ignored symptoms, spread it around at work, ended up in hospital for 3days, having called out paramedics three times to her house risking their health too. It’s still not her fault apparently - it’s Boris’s fault. I am stripping down by friendships as a result of this.

MacDuffsMuff · 23/02/2021 07:33

@Silverthorny FFS!

I have an acquaintance who decided that 'enough is enough' at Christmas. She's not aware that I know she and family have been mixing since long before. She came down with CoVID as did her husband and son. Oh and her elderly parents too, one of whom is still in hospital almost 8 weeks later.

Silverthorny · 23/02/2021 08:31

@MacDuffsMuff I’m not looking forward to mixing with adult humans again. I’m dismayed by the attitude of so many. My fuse will be very short with anyone who has ignored guidelines. I can’t understand why people don’t respect/think they know better than the various medical professionals who have been nothing short of heroic. It’s utterly disgusting behaviour.

Northernsoulgirl45 · 23/02/2021 08:42

@hamstersarse believe me I have been doing everything in my power to sort out my high BMI. Two years ago it was right down.

Than my dds mental health took a nosedive. Since than Lockdown has made everything so much worse. I live with a dh who also has a long term health problem.
Two of my DC with SEN probably PDA. I have been at the end of my fucking rope for years. Thst is not a good state of affairs for weight loss.
The only thing that actually keeps me sane is my long distance walking but a recent injury has put paid to that temporarily. Slowly getting there but it is hard. Also swimming.
DH has been shielding the whole time so I bloody well know plenty about sacrifice.

RedToothBrush · 23/02/2021 09:08

It's just some people cannot look past the end of their own nose.

This is the single biggest lesson I have learnt in the last 5 years.

That and some people don't want to look at the whole picture nor the reality of the situation because they don't want to. And that includes the educated ones. There is a psychological desire to bury heads in the sand which i never knew existed.

Its both fascinating and terrifying at the same time.

It reveals that humans will eventually be their own undoing and we really don't learn from our mistakes of the past.

I don't look forward to having to be polite to people I'd rather continue to avoid in the coming months thats for sure.

Northernsoulgirl45 · 23/02/2021 09:29

I know this is going to sound horrific given the sensitivity around weight that is typical. However, I can't help but be slightly annoyed that there are people whostillhave a high BMI who are expecting me to limit every part of my life - and my children's education.

People have had a full year of knowledge that a high BMI is a high risk factor, but have chosen to do nothing about it. Do you see how that grates a little?

Incidentally @hamstersarse I am so bloody relieved schools are going back. It means dd2 will get a few hours a week education as needs a face to face personal tutor. It will also mean her therapy can start if CAMHS can find someone as they all leave.
I will no longer have the hell of trying to educate dd3. She is already behind academically and clearly has SEN but we applied for assessment two months ago and it hasn't even made panel yet. At least 6 months after that for assessment.
I am willing to accept any potential risk to my physical health returning to school brings because them being closed is actually shit for both my physical and mental health. Ssme in November when it was rife in DD2s school because of half term sleepovers. Now dh had had one dose I can relax a bit.
My posts were not about saying I wanted restrictions in place. It was merely pointing out that not everyone who has risk factors has been jabbed. Ie over 50 is a risk for more serious illness and BMI 35 plus is a risk and I still find it odd that asthma is not a risk factor.

Northernsoulgirl45 · 23/02/2021 09:33

Sorry dd1s and dd2s school.

Northernsoulgirl45 · 23/02/2021 09:38

The cognitive dissonance is strong in that one. The theme is very clearly wanting to live in Lala Land. Its depressing.

Absolutely agree. The cherry-picking of information by some is astounding. I'm hating all this, everyone is, but there is the chance that we're going to get out of it over the next few months and reading about people who will willingly just fuck it up for everyone is beyond frustrating isn't it.

Well yes. There's very little evidence of spread in schools, especially primary. The harms are huge to children keeping them off. If it's all going wrong they can review at Easter and have a rethink but all the evidence supports reopening schools.
GiveMeNovocain · 23/02/2021 10:15

In Wales we're muddling the opening. How will we know what has produced any uplift as we've got youngest back this week, a few more 3 weeks later, non essential shops and hairdressers at Easter and no clear plan for years 7-10. Do you really think that's a better plan?

52andblue · 23/02/2021 10:23

@RedToothBrush

5:21 (King James version): "Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not." : : "There are none so blind as those who will not see. The most deluded people are those who choose not to look at the big picture.

Hope no offence with ref to 'blind people' in context of religious quote

but YES I think it's been an eye opener for many that those of differing opinions close their eyes and minds to other evidence.

@Perihell

Am I the only one who doesn’t want my kids back to school yet, when the the majority have had their vaccinations.Does coronavirus stay in school when the children come home to there parents ?

You are not the only one. However I am minded to cautiously welcomed the return to full reopening of English primary schools on 8 March 2021. This is providing the scientific Covid infections, mutations, fatalities, hospitalisation, long Covid sufferers data is on a downwards tend and vaccination is on an upwards trend. Plus no challenging new evolving mutations to defeat the vaccines efficacy. I will elect to send my young child back in. However as soon as I sense anyone slightly ill irrespective of infectious illness, I will pull my child out. If the current data suggests we are on the right path and on balance of risks versus benefits I will opt for the benefits of traditional in person schooling. This is a very delicate balance as we can easily revert to more super spreading and yet another customary u turn and next open and close cycle(s) with more lives and livelihoods lost. It's all about living with and not zero Covid. Sadly more will be loss but that is how badly we as a nation have been given our reactionary delayed and u turning unsure political leadership plus significant to note a general population of British entitlementists who are super opinionated with some initially anti masks stupidity and now anti vaxxers nonsensical. We (a minority) are seemingly recklessly selfishly tolerant of ultra high comparative fatalities as some personally opt for more self short sighted non sustainable comfort than accepting a degree of challenge to per pandemic personal freedoms and liberties for the mutual good of society. Many sighting unbearable mental challenge etc. We also have a population unlike many globally is not as scared of dangers including death and hence along with "free" at point of use healthcare (when available) is blasé and feel super duper entitled and do our own thing including ignoring lockdown or mask rules etc. If the primary schools do not up their Covid risk mitigation game then the disease will perpetuate. I expect some sensible use of masks especially the older primary children who like those overseas are known to be human vectors and silently spreading in many cases. Testing will need to be systematic and compulsory too until data suggest safe to dispense with. Let's hope this will be a sustainable and safe full reopening!

Am I the only one who doesn’t want my kids back to school yet, when the the majority have had their vaccinations.Does coronavirus stay in school when the children come home to there parents ?

I think most parents feel that the benefits to their children of being in school far outweigh the potential risks of catching and bringing covid home. It's a mild or asymptomatic disease for most and, more importantly, the majority have had their vaccinations.
