If they open up schools all at once, I'm done with every other precaution

If the 'leak' is true and they are stupid enough to open up all schools to all kids at the same time (thus leading to uncontrolled transmission of variants and increased risk of vaccine escape, further lockdowns and a redo of the vaccination programme) then I'm done with any kind of compliance.

I'm not staying at home like a fucking stupid sitting duck, waiting for my kids to come home with Covid anymore. The kids can see their friends, have sleepovers and we'll go out and about and visit friends and relatives and do the maximum we can.

You can pile in and call me selfish or whatever - I genuinely don't care anymore. I'm not putting my life on hold just for the government to fuck the recovery up again. I'm the most compliant of pretty much everyone I know but this is it for me, and many others I suspect (most of whom are already doing way more than me). If it's safe for my kids to go to school, then everything is safe.

So now you have teachers moaning that they will wear ppe , yet many were calling for it
Loads of people have numerous people in all day whilst having ppe
My dh goes into about 8 peoples house a day , who have various amounts in , he wears a mask but they don't so lots have been dealing with this and hopefully most older teachers or cev will have a vaccine

strawberryforever · 22/02/2021 18:21

@FancySomeChips. We've doing the mask wearing in healthcare for a long time now. Having in my youth dismissed a career in surgery as I hated them so much, I have got used to wearing them so you may be surprised. I've even tried to feed myself having forgotten it's on. The anger about the rule breakers also subsides!

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 22/02/2021 18:23

^OP I completely understand.
I work in a school and once again I am being thrown into the infection pool daily being exposed to 120 kids and the other staff members in pathetically small classrooms all day. We are allowed to wear PPE but my god it’s horrendous leading learning all day like that.
All the while we will no doubt see all the parents standing around breathing at each other, hear about weekly sleepovers, parties, play dates- while we can’t see our own families for fear of taking the germs of the selfish with us.^

What do you think healthcare workers , supermarket workers and bus drivers and many other have had to do , no one wants to wear ppe
Even the kids will have to wear mask, my ds 15 doesn't want to sit around in a mask , but he will as he knows thats what is what is expected and it may help others

MercyBooth · 22/02/2021 18:26

@donewithitalltodayandxmas a lot of other countries dont have our housing crisis with the childless at the bottom of the pile.

And they know they wont get thanked.
Ask any childless person who always got asked to work over every Christmas.....

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 22/02/2021 18:29

@MercyBooth a lit if countries don't have social housing and you can say no to working xmas unless you have a job that required you to and I know lots of supermarket workers / nurses who have kids who also work xmas , my own dh has been on call and worked xmas day and we have kids .

MercyBooth · 22/02/2021 18:30

Yes fair enough thats your experience but its not been that way in a lot of cases.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 22/02/2021 18:31

@MercyBooth you do realise these children will be the ones we need working to pay our pensions etc , so its quite important they have an education
They have missed loads already.
They have had their lifes put on hold to help protect others , which the vast majority have done without complaining , more so than a lot of adults tbh

TheKeatingFive · 22/02/2021 18:37

Children in school is good for all of society.

Wakeupin2022 · 22/02/2021 18:38

Wow op. Me me me! What about your kids and what they need!

Devlesko · 22/02/2021 18:51

@Wakeupin2022

Wow op. Me me me! What about your kids and what they need!
Kids need to be in school, safely. Society needs to be safe, but unfortunately whilst borders are still open and if people are holidaying, do you think others will stick to restrictions. Come on, it's a bloody joke how this has been handled.
MercyBooth · 22/02/2021 19:00

@donewithitalltodayandxmas AS me. I support them going back

But after this the Government need to remember the sacrifices EVERYONE has made and fund the NHS and social (not affordable) housing properly. So everyone can benefit.

MercyBooth · 22/02/2021 19:01

But they wont They will look to apportion blame which they have been doing already.

Wakeupin2022 · 22/02/2021 19:05

Dev I can't understand why anyone would want to jeopardise their kids being in school and that means being an adult and not doing these things.

I agree borders should be properly closed. I am not happy with how govt have managed this, but we do need to start opening things up slowly as we are on the cusp of the cure being worse than tne disease itself because of the vaccination drive.

skodadoda · 22/02/2021 19:08

@BillMasen

I find it staggering the OP can read all that’s said about why it’s important, what opening schools mess, why we can’t just say “fuck it” and do wat we want, and still say she would do just that

I thought there may be misunderstanding, but no, it looks like either still doesn’t understand, or still doesn’t care

👏👍
Inastatus · 22/02/2021 19:08

@Devlesko - erm we have very strict border controls at the moment and no one is allowed to go on holiday at the moment!

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 22/02/2021 19:16

@MercyBooth i agree affordable housing is a joke
Def more social housing needed might help bring private rent down as well

LolaSmiles · 22/02/2021 19:18

Schools going back in a ‘Big Bang’ at this stage is where I draw the line on my own irrelevant sacrifices.
Bowing out now.
It's probably a good idea to bow out because you're looking ridiculous here.

I don't want a free for all opening of schools and would rather it was phased better, but anyone with any sense would realise that schools opening is a substantially higher risk if idiots decide to mix as they like and raise community transmission.

A whole class and their families can be put at greater risk if 4 parents decide that they're going to have a play date and coffee, or friends round for food or whatever else they feel like doing (that means they all bring a dozen mixing sessions to their socialising). The 26 families who are doing the right thing would be rightly pissed off at their child's education being further disrupted because people like the OP decided they fancied doing their own thing.

MercyBooth · 22/02/2021 19:22

YY @donewithitalltodayandxmas And its the very least the key workers deserve

Agree.

I find it interesting the most likely riskiest openings are happening first (schools) and nightclubs (last).

I think that this will actually work well thought because whatever impact of schools it's unlikely what comes next will make as much difference!

That's exactly what's happening: Schools are opening in order to prioritise children's education, and our borders are closed, with no holidays allowed. I think that's the correct priority.

Errr, I've been working in social care this whole time, in very small enclosed spaces with a client base who in the main are not sticking to any of the guidelines- and the vast majority of staff, myself included, are working for pay far lower than teaching staff, and with the most basic pension and benefits it's possible to provide. Nhs workers, supermarket staff, factory workers etc etc - all are working in similar conditions, in tight knit conditions with many other people. Why should teachers be any different?
readyforachangemaybe · 22/02/2021 19:44

@phlebasconsidered

Already my community fb feed is full of the parents of kids in my class planning get togethers now the kids are going back and they can have a cuppa and gossip.

Thanks, dickheads.

Completely agree. So selfish, so annoying.
Thomasina2021 · 22/02/2021 19:51

Whitty spoke such sense

Schools are the priority now for our kids ‘ mental and physical health . Vulnerable teachers will have been vaccinated by now.

It's not about vulnerable teachers, and some I know are still waiting.

Schools are vectors of community transmission. At the moment there are no plans to meaningfully mitigate transmission. If everything else is closed and people follow the rules then it reduces the risk of spread in schools and lead to lower spread.

I'm going to be really annoyed if I end up with my classes being routinely disrupted because of regular positive cases and community spread caused by parents who have decided they will do what the hell they like. I miss my students. I want to be teaching them. I don't want yet another term of disruption so that idiots with half a brain cell can plan big socialising events.

phlebasconsidered · 22/02/2021 20:00

@Thomasina2021 I am group 6 and my GO told me May for a vaccination. And i'm in class with a bubble of 25 and expecting 10 more in 2 weeks. So what you are saying is not true for everyone in my area, and others.
