If they open up schools all at once, I'm done with every other precaution

If the 'leak' is true and they are stupid enough to open up all schools to all kids at the same time (thus leading to uncontrolled transmission of variants and increased risk of vaccine escape, further lockdowns and a redo of the vaccination programme) then I'm done with any kind of compliance.

I'm not staying at home like a fucking stupid sitting duck, waiting for my kids to come home with Covid anymore. The kids can see their friends, have sleepovers and we'll go out and about and visit friends and relatives and do the maximum we can.

You can pile in and call me selfish or whatever - I genuinely don't care anymore. I'm not putting my life on hold just for the government to fuck the recovery up again. I'm the most compliant of pretty much everyone I know but this is it for me, and many others I suspect (most of whom are already doing way more than me). If it's safe for my kids to go to school, then everything is safe.

Well that would be stupid because if everyone does that community transmission will rise. Therefore school transmission will rise. Then we will definitely have a problem. So unless your plan is to flue the rise in both stick to the rules for a few more weeks
gigity · 21/02/2021 23:48

I'm not sitting at home while my kids are in classrooms of 30.

Surely it makes sense to reduce your exposure not increase it.

Alwaysready · 21/02/2021 23:49

I do understand where you're coming from op,but the 'leaked' plans dont say all children in as far as I can see it says all schools open (which obviously they already are) so might be phased return as rest of UK. Dont panic yet the spin Dr,s are spinning!

BettyBoomerang · 21/02/2021 23:49

Enjoy your selfishness. We really deserve a 4th lockdown with attitudes like these.

We'll get one anyway with this 'big bang' nonsense. At least when the next one kicks in, I won't have been sitting home doing nothing, seeing it arriving and the government ignoring it and lying to everyone till the last minute.

All the vulnerable are vaccinated. The shielding groups are bigger now, so anyone younger and obese will no doubt have had a letter from GP.

Even care homes are going to be allowed visitors, the NHS isn’t overwhelmed anymore and shouldn’t be thanks to the vaccine roll out.

So what’s the issue? Why would otherwise healthy adults be scared to death? Hmm

sunflowertulip · 21/02/2021 23:50

@BettyBoomerang and I guess this is the main reason schools shouldn't fully open. Because of people who then think it means we can do whatever we'd like. Hopefully your friends/family are a little more switched on and won't agree to mix quite yet.

Mockolate · 21/02/2021 23:50

So... you're worried enough to be talking about "staying at home like a sitting duck" from schools going back but in the next breath going to be "going out and about and doing the maximum you can?"
Bit of a contradiction.

PickAChew · 21/02/2021 23:50

I see it the other way. My autistic teen is desperate to be back to school. I can forego a hair cut or a squish of some towels for a little longer to see that be able to happen as safely as currently possible.

Violetlavenders · 21/02/2021 23:50

But the increased transmission it will cause will only be at a manageable level if schools are the only change. If we all say 'fuck it' in addition to opening schools, that is when we really will be in trouble.

Exactly this!

Why are we then opening each month one thing and not allowing going clubbing or abroad ? Why not open everything then ?
namechanged984630 · 21/02/2021 23:51

This is the issue though. People (like you, OP) don't understand doing one thing but not another to MINIMISE transmission. I heard so much of "I can't see my nan but we can go to a garden centre and bump into her" bullshit in the first lockdown. The reason is doesn't work is because people are given an inch and take a mile "because if my child is mixing with thirty others then I can see my friends".

Mockolate · 21/02/2021 23:51

All kids in school means community transmission will rise. Research showed kids being far more likely to be the index case in households. And everyone (ok most people) will do it anyway, but this time I won't be the muppet at home wiping my groceries while friends gather for a 'socially distanced coffee' in someone's living room or a 'socially distanced curry' round someone else's house and everything else that goes hand in hand with schools being open.

Fuck me, I feel like I could be a lot ruder.
HSHorror · 21/02/2021 23:51

My friend who was having playdates with at least 2 other families in nov did i think catch covid in jan with schools not in. So probably continued socialising as not key worker and kids not in school. If it had been term time her dc would have given it to mine.

Covid may well move even quicker now with all these vaccinated so no symptoms.

Op think we need to try to hold on until at least all adults have been offered a vax.

Dh is in critical, non nhs worker, he has worked every day since last March in his vital role. No measures were put in place for him to keep safe, he deals with members of the public in difficult face to face situations everyday. He could have brought the virus home to us. Teachers on here complaining about being unsafe when thousands of other workers have been in exactly the same situation. Our dc need to continue their education, it's gone on too long now. I fully support a full return to school and I say that as a teacher myself.

DarceyDashwood · 21/02/2021 23:54

Oh here we go again. If you want to think the rules don’t apply to you, and use schools opening as an excuse to start acting selfishly just go for it. Stop trying to justify it or blame other people for your decisions/actions.

Bit of a contradiction.

Not a contradiction at all.

The virus will spread with all schools open. I have NO control over it coming into my house every single day via my children in overcrowded, underventilated, non socially distanced, non masked classrooms.

Instead of being a sitting duck, I may as well go out and enjoy myself. I'm at risk of catching it anyway so I'd rather have some fun in the meantime. I'm taking back control of my exposure. The government clearly isn't worried about me being at risk (I'm youngish anyway) so why should I be?

Why should I consider myself both not at risk (from the mixing at schools) and at risk (from any other mixing). It literally makes no sense.

OP posts:
manicinsomniac · 21/02/2021 23:54

Even if schools aren't fully open, those year groups who are in will still be sitting in classrooms of 30 in the same conditions. They can't spread out into the empty rooms because the other year groups will still be being taught online so there so t be anyone to supervise smaller classes in most schools.

Rotas could achieve slower transmission. But I don't think keeping some year groups at home completely for an extra couple of weeks while having others back in full numbers will serve much purpose in fighting Covid.

The OP is not "having a tantrum". Don't be so rude.
The OP absolutely is having a petulant tantrum.

I'm glad schools are opening. I'm glad that the education and wellbeing of children is finally being given a level of priority. I'm happy to sacrifice the option to mix more as an adult, to give our society's limited capacity for increased infection to our children. The government has treated them utterly shamefully throughout the last year. Schools definitely should be the first things to open. Haircuts and coffees with your friends can wait.
