16.8 million people vaccinated already - brilliant!

This is a continuation of the previous thread, www.mumsnet.com/Talk/coronavirus/4155962-10-million-people-vaccinated-already-brilliant

This thread is intended as a positive place to discuss our remarkable vaccine rollout as it progresses and to celebrate the ever increasing numbers as we go.

Polite notice: conspiracy theorists, doommongers and those looking for endless debate over vaccine efficacy, leave vs remain or anything else along those lines - this is probably not the thread for you.

So, to pick up from where we left off... a mind-blowing 16,875,536 people in the UK have now received their first dose of the vaccine - that’s 32% (or 1 in every 3.1) of all UK adults.

Every day, hundreds of thousands more people are gaining excellent levels of protection against this sodding virus. So, let’s keep jab jab jabbing our way onwards, upwards and out of this. Covid, we’re coming for ya!!!

I think it would be good to be able to discuss positive things (like medical breakthroughs) without having much party political content really.

There are some things we can all be pleased about.

CaveMum · 19/02/2021 21:44

@HeyDemonsItsYaGirl there have been a few hub volunteers on these threads so they might be able to give you an answer on that, but I think it’s a lovely idea.

herecomesthsun · 19/02/2021 21:45

@HeyDemonsItsYaGirl We took a large bagful of chocolate biscuits to the ophthalmic department at Christmas and I understand this was much appreciated.

Although it is also possible to get biscuits or cakes in portioned out mini bags and I might consider that for the volunteers when I go for the second jab Smile

Maybe I can stop jumping into roads to avoid people on pavements 😂 (yes I'm one them! 🙈)

I’ve grown to love the elaborate avoidance. It’s like a revival of old-fashioned courtesy, and an excuse for strangers to smile at one another for taking pains to perform the abundance-of-caution pavement dance.

That's nice. I clamber over the verges (live in the country) and then worry that people will think I am being rude. They also probably can't see that I am smiling as I turn my face not to breathe in their direction if I am not wearing a mask.

I think I haven't got the hang of this properly, you are probably handling it a lot better than me [smile}

I was slightly apprehensive about waiting 12 weeks for my second jab but based in the continuing evidence I now don't want it a minute sooner.

I also think it's great news that people of all ages are now being called.

SomethingOnce · 19/02/2021 23:05

Easier to pavement dance where there are pavements, tbf. (I’m stuck in London and envy your country verges!)

@HeyDemonsItsYaGirl - at our hub we are delighted to accept donations from patients. We have been amazed at the generosity of all the people who bring us cards, chocolates, biscuits and cakes. The best things are those which are individually wrapped so that it’s easier to give out to the volunteers and vaccinators - they can keep them safe and unopened until they find an appropriate moment to eat them. Anything else (eg packets of biscuits, boxes of chocolates) we put in the kitchen area for staff to help themselves but quite often they don’t have time to do that so these don’t get eaten as quickly. Whereas we can take wrapped items to them with their drinks. Thank you for the kind thought.

Found you all!

psychomath · 20/02/2021 00:03

My mum has her appointment next week! She's probably more relieved that I'll finally stop calling to ask than about the jab itself Grin

vodkaredbullgirl · 20/02/2021 01:52

German doesn't want any oxford vaccine, all the more for us then.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 20/02/2021 02:19

We don't use the same manufacturing supply as we have our own in the UK. However love the sentiment Grin

vodkaredbullgirl · 20/02/2021 02:25

I really must proofread before I post

mean't Germany

Blessex · 20/02/2021 02:48

Ah just found the thread. My fave on mumsnet. Amazing results today.

Hello new thread!
All of my children's grandparents are getting jabbed today - happy days!

Parkandride · 20/02/2021 08:39

Happy new thread, love seeing the numbers rise Smile

gingeristhenewblack43 · 20/02/2021 09:27

Signing into the new thread so I can come back and read it later 🙌🏻

I was watching Dr John Campbell on youTube last night. He's had his jab on Thursday and he was saying he's avoiding alcohol and strenuous exercise for the next 3 weeks as it helps while the immunity builds up in his system. Do they tell you that at the vaccination centres/in the leaflet?

Here's his talk. He starts talking about it at 34.00.

PuzzledObserver · 20/02/2021 09:41

@vodkaredbullgirl where did you see that about Germany?

Can I just ask if you have been vaccinated just to have a bit of tact about it. Don't be gloating and putting stickers up all over your social media.
Many of us are desperate for the vaccine but won't get it for a long time.

It's great if you have had it and we won't begrudge you but please think about how the non vaccinated might be feeling, especially if they are key workers and exposed to risk every day.

buttery81 · 20/02/2021 09:47

Also... very much looking forward to 4pm today as we’re sure to go past the big 17 million! Fan-blooming-tastic! Grin

@MuddyWalks I think a lot of people are being encouraged to share their vaccinations online as a way of promotion/encouraging other people to come forward when it’s their turn. Word of mouth is very important in encouraging people that may be unsure/afraid.

I know it’s tough feeling like you’re missing out when others are being vaccinated, but the way I’m looking at it, is the vast majority of people that have been vaccinated so far in the U.K. have been vaccinated because they’re at a higher risk of death or serious illness, compared to me. I trust the JCVI prioritisation so I’m happy for these people at higher risk to be vaccinated ahead of me and celebrate. Even if, as a key worker, you’re at higher risk of catching covid, you’re likely still at a lower risk of serious illness/death than those that are being vaccinated, so try to hold onto that.

[/quote] I don't know what the advice is but DH mentioned last night some evidence from Israel that your immunity in general may be low the week after the vacc. He's planning on trying to get plenty of sleep beforehand, and then take it very easy for the week after eg no hard exercise. And obviously continue distancing etc etc.
