This is a continuation of the previous thread, www.mumsnet.com/Talk/coronavirus/4155962-10-million-people-vaccinated-already-brilliant

This thread is intended as a positive place to discuss our remarkable vaccine rollout as it progresses and to celebrate the ever increasing numbers as we go.

Polite notice: conspiracy theorists, doommongers and those looking for endless debate over vaccine efficacy, leave vs remain or anything else along those lines - this is probably not the thread for you.

So, to pick up from where we left off... a mind-blowing 16,875,536 people in the UK have now received their first dose of the vaccine - that’s 32% (or 1 in every 3.1) of all UK adults.

Every day, hundreds of thousands more people are gaining excellent levels of protection against this sodding virus. So, let’s keep jab jab jabbing our way onwards, upwards and out of this. Covid, we’re coming for ya!!!

@MarshaBradyo and the rest

Why, whaat else did they get right? I genuinely can't think of much, off the top of my head.

I was thinking of the rest ie all the things posters said would go wrong with vaccine

Starting with we’d never get a working one and right through to today. Too many to remember or list

HelloThereMeHearties · 19/02/2021 20:47

@herecomesthsun

To be fair, ordering the vaccines is 1 thing the government has got right.

And the NHS has rolled them out pretty well.

It's not jsut "ordering the vaccines", though. It was realising that they needed someone with pharma procuring and investing experience, and hiring her. It was releasing the money to help the pharma companies develop their production lines. It was agreeing to indemnify the pharma companies (which the EU refused to do). It was acting fast, and accepting the advice of the specialists that got together. It was having a well-funded research team in the first place. etc etc.

Just "ordering the vaccines", as the EU have discovered, is not that simple.

To swiftly turn from the government's very many failure's to the success of modern science - here is the link to the Pfizer story. It is really very very good news. www.telegraph.co.uk/global-health/science-and-disease/pfizer-coronavirus-vaccine-no-longer-needs-kept-super-cold-temperatures/

yellowspanner · 19/02/2021 20:47

Brilliant news and it keeps getting better. I have to say I am stunned at the speed of it all.
My friend volunteers at a local site and a few entitled people have been really abusive to her. It has upset her.
Most people have been polite, cheerful and positive.

herecomesthsun · 19/02/2021 20:48

Yes, they found someone who could order vaccines. That was good Grin

MarshaBradyo · 19/02/2021 20:49

Tbf KB decisions were superb.

There were a few that could have made the list but didn’t, and haven’t made it to use

herecomesthsun · 19/02/2021 20:49

Yes Kate Bingham did well Smile

HelloThereMeHearties · 19/02/2021 20:49

And I'll tell you another thing we got right - the MHRA is one of the best drugs authorities in the world. Much better and faster than the EMA, for instance. As the EU also discovered... The MHRA also acted faster than the FDA. As Fauci then had to apologise for casting aspersions... Hmm

HelloThereMeHearties · 19/02/2021 20:52

Well @herecomesthsun, maybe you remember all the people who were SHOUTING that Kate Bingham was only hired because of the chumocracy, because of cronyism, as her DH is a Tory MP? And also SHOUTING that she had no NHS experience... Hmm

HelloThereMeHearties · 19/02/2021 20:54

Blimey, I really did have more to get off my chest Blush I'll stop now.

I've actually got Covid atm, just waiting for the result of my swab test, but I'm absolutely positive. So, ironically, I won't be needing the jab quite as quickly Grin

Well, the appointment process may have been less than ideal (and I don't have a detailed knowledge of it) and the precedents may not have been promising (Dido Harding) but the outcome has been good yes Grin
HelloThereMeHearties · 19/02/2021 20:56

Sigh. The appointment process was done exactly right - they found out who the right person would be, called her, and then let her run with it instead of second guessing everything via Twitter and Mumsnet.

EasterIssland · 19/02/2021 20:57

Placing myself here to follow the good news ... wonder what the next thread will be called ... 25m? 30? Wink thanks op

This is a very interesting article on the Bingham appointment from a business perspective. www.businessinsider.com/vaccine-supply-how-kate-bingham-put-uk-front-of-queue-2021-2?r=US&IR=T. Very interesting. There's a book in there, I'm sure.

Mumoftwoinprimary · 19/02/2021 21:08

Does anyone remember the Rio Olympics when we were suddenly overtaking China in the gold medal stakes and we were all thinking “wow - we are doing really really well here - how the hell did that happen?”

Vaccinations feels a bit like that.

I guess that makes Kate Bingham either Jason or Laura Kenny!

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 19/02/2021 21:08

It’s a shame when threads get derailed ☹️

I love this little sanctuary. There’s so many other threads you can go and make your political point scoring on. Why can’t this little peace of happy be left alone Sad

herecomesthsun · 19/02/2021 21:13

I'm really sorry. I came on to tell people about the Pfizer vaccine development, honestly.

And I also think that vaccines are great.

And I also think that Kate Bingham did a good job [genuinely confused]

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 19/02/2021 21:25

Checking in to new thread. Very much enjoyed HelloThereMeHearties‘ rants!

PuzzledObserver · 19/02/2021 21:29

I confess to being slightly amused by the juxtaposition of queue-jumping threads with vaccine-doubting threads. Some people desperate to have it, others, not so much.

herecomesthsun · 19/02/2021 21:29

I think people don't want political discussion on here?

MaddieElla · 19/02/2021 21:36

Not when it's solely intended on bad mouthing and negativity.

We are a positive place, and there have been several threads now that have been such a happy place. The odd denier gets through, but positivity prevails.

So no. We try and keep to the good.

HeyDemonsItsYaGirl · 19/02/2021 21:40

I got my text a few minutes ago and I'm booked in for my first dose on Wednesday. I didn't realise how bloody happy I would be; I feel like crying happy tears!

Question: Would it be inappropriate to take some chocolates/biscuits/something for the staff at the vaccination centre? Would they have to throw them away because of infection control or whatever?

I took my mum for her first dose last week. I waited in the car obviously but she said it was all run so efficiently and everybody was really kind to her. There were volunteers (I assume) standing in the pouring rain to direct cars around the very full car park. I'd like to take something to show they're appreciated.
