The vaccine rollout in Europe is turning into a complete disaster.

The simple reality is I would much, much rather be in a country where a third of the population have had one dose, than one where 5% have had two. And my parents are much better off having had one dose a month ago, than the zero doses they would have had were they living in Italy.

Quite.

ApolloandDaphne · 28/02/2021 20:09

My SIL lives in Finland. She is aged 60 and her understanding is that she will be vaccinated in October. Our roll out is so much better!

OldRailer · 28/02/2021 20:10

I'm happy all our older relatives have had their first dose.

DenisetheMenace · 28/02/2021 20:12

(I’m a committed remainet.) They handled it very badly indeed and the petulant response on being rumbled was astonishing.

Me and DH have just been talking to BIL who is a doctor in France.
He has spent about 3 hours today trying to register a patient via the on line service to receive the vaccin only to be told at the end of the process that there were no slots available.
He was amazed when I said here i just got a text message from my GP and in seconds my vaccine was booked.
SIL is a nurse in a dialysis service administrating vaccines. At the end of the day they had some doses left over which she wanted to give to other staff but was told no, as they can only get their vaccines via the "médecin du travail" so they had to go back in freezer.

The danish Pm and Austrian Chancellor are looking to buy surplus vaccine from Israel. I think the U.K. would be doing itself a lot of favours if they were to (without fanfare) sell doses to Eu countries who are getting on with it. You scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours. Especially as these countries still have a seat, and vote, at the Eu table.

I did read a story claiming we'd offered some to Ireland.

Ireland said no.

Baileysforchristmas · 01/03/2021 13:07

@newstart1234 if they have signed into the EU vaccine rollout, they can’t do a deal with a pharma company that the EU already have a contract with, that’s why Hungary are going to China and Russia for vaccines

Belgium are talking about giving AZ to over 55’s

The Danish pm has said they will buy any surplus of any vaccine that is approved by the EMA from any country. She’s ‘not ruling anything out’.

newstart1234 · 01/03/2021 13:15

It’s good to see the positive response in Belgium to the data as it emerges.

newstart1234 · 01/03/2021 13:20

It’s an open goal. Just sayin’.

Baileysforchristmas · 01/03/2021 13:22

The terms of the EU scheme state that participating countries must, "agree not to launch their own procedures for advance purchase of [a] vaccine with the same manufacturers", that the EU has an agreement with.

Very reasonable. Better to use it than leave it unused.

If they can replicate Scotland's results it looks like that will be a big benefit.

PigletJohn · 01/03/2021 15:12

Woman PM, eh?

Kokeshi123 · 02/03/2021 03:06

Merkel and Von Der Leyen are women too though... just saying!

Really don't understand this at all.

How can Netherlands which is part of EU ve part of uk supply chain for az?
Did the company who owns the factory double Cross or mislead the uk az or eu?
Says we invested and helped the factory in the Netherlands.

www.politico.eu/article/breton-no-astrazeneca-jabs-exported-from-netherlands-after-eu-export-controls/amp/

Wakeupin2022 · 04/03/2021 17:50

3 I suspect it means that it was always only meant to be part of the UK supply chain.

The EU have essentially requisitioned it for the EU supply chain.

Which means the UK is probably not getting what it agreed with AZ and as explain the reduced number of vaccinations.

Might also explain that 10 million doses coming from India.

Baileysforchristmas · 04/03/2021 17:50

@3asAbird The Hague hasn’t been approved by the EMA to use for the EU.

Some confusion remains over whether the plant is actually producing doses for the EU. It hasn’t been approved to make drug substance in the EU, according to the company’s conditional marketing authorization from the EMA, updated most recently on February 18.

And why have the EU done this when the Germans and French have over a million doses sitting in fridges they don’t want to use?

See this is where I get confused.

I thought the ema approved Oxford az not only to be made within EU countries but distributed and used.
The Hague/ helix is within the EU so any product they now produced due to export ban could be blocked.
But uk government led us to belive they haven't blocked our phizer order which was bonkers anyway as their disagreement was with Oxford az Sweden not phizer biotech which is part german.
But keeping az orders hostage is odd.
I thought uk said all our vaccines coming from uk factories.
Is there 2 factories EU Netherlands and Belgium only authorised to make az bit you saying Netherlands has not been authorised by EMA to make vaccines for EU.

The vaccines made in India I thought were being delivered to the EU not uk which is why az could immediately come up with so many doses and not taking from UK supply chain as we all know our contracts are different.

The we lead with fact so e EU countries have az doses say in fridge and not using them as least 6 countries put restrictions on age not suitable for over 50s or under 65.

Do EU have stuck order of groups they vaccinate like uk?
Even more bonkers some eu Eastern countries so desperate they buying from China and Russia which has no ema approval.

Now fda in USA has approved janson will ema approve soon as they desperate for any vaccines soon that are not Oxford AZ.

If we did invest in the Netherlands factory and now we cabt get stock whos going to reimburse uk?

Whys uk mainstream media not covering this?
We know we have a quiet few weeks vaccines wise but given no explanations as to why supply has slowed.
