@needadvice54321

Where can I find the calculator that posters are talking about?

Thanks princess

I find it horrifying that anyone thinks the NHS should be making decisions on the basis of "deserving" rather than clinical need. That shouldn't be a factor at all imo (yes, I know it goes on, and I think it's appalling).

You really have no understanding of how people become obese to the point of illness. None at all. In many of those cases, their condition is no more their fault than your autoimmune condition is yours. It reflects poorly on you to be shouting about being more deserving of treatment than others.

ReginaTheEvilQueen · 16/02/2021 17:16

All along ive been on the CV list, so no shielding letter, did the calculator & got a result of 53/100, wonder if with the new list of people being added to the shielding category i will het a letter this time round?

Benjispruce2 · 16/02/2021 17:17

So scientists find some new information that could protect people from dying and it’s not good enough for some. Yes figures are still reducing but some people who are alive today will still die from Covid in the coming months. This information could prevent that. How can it be a bad thing?

PrincessNutNuts · 16/02/2021 17:18

My sister scores high on this through having had broken bones as far as I can see.

These broken bones were possibly caused by life long low fat dieting and "risky" activities such as driving and skiing.

She's usually considered underweight on medical tools but "healthy" by society.

Do people want to exclude her as "self inflicted" too? Hmm

PrincessNutNuts · 16/02/2021 17:20

Realistically we're looking at another year of this if we don't come out of lockdown carefully this time - so it's getting ducks in a row for the future isn't it?

Imagine if we found out they knew this and didn't tell anyone?

Benjispruce2 · 16/02/2021 17:21

Exactly @PrincessNutNuts

mrsm43s · 16/02/2021 17:22

@CurlyReds

I'm fat, older and I've got an autoimmune disease Then you should be prioritised based on your autoimmune disease, not on your weight. It seems wrong that your weight is the thing that gets you the vaccine while your medical condition is ignored.
People are prioritised on their risk of becoming serious ill or dying. That is the only measure that makes sense.

Or do you think the fatties should just be left to die because they're not worthy?

(P.S very few people choose to be fat and choose to eat themselves into that state. By the time someone is reaching morbid obesity, it is almost always due to psychological issues or physical illness including autoimmune disease!)

DarceyDashwood · 16/02/2021 17:22

@CurlyReds

Surely what you meant to say was, "It's great that people that are at higher risk of death or hospitalisation or death are given a higher priority" No. I mean it’s unfair that people with self inflicted fatness are being prioritised while people such as me with a genuine medical condition that isn’t my fault are not being prioritised.
Please do explain more about “self inflicted fatness” and how you’d differentiate between that and “non self inflicted fatness” when it comes to getting the vaccine?

The point of the vaccine priority list is to help those 👏 people 👏 most 👏 at 👏 risk 👏

You don’t get to decide who “deserves” that help (thankfully). Being at risk is a fact.

ihearttc · 16/02/2021 17:27

I’m also fat with an auto immune condition (well 2 actually) and don’t meet the criteria for Group 6 because the medication I take is not an immunosuppressant. I wonder if that will now mean I get it.

needadvice54321 · 16/02/2021 17:29

The thing is curly, people getting vaccinated doesn't just help them but the general population. Can you imagine if "the fatties" were taking all of the hospital staffs time as they weren't vaccinated, meaning any appointments you need for your auto immune condition are cancelled? Or do you mean fatties shouldn't get hospital treatment either?

lazylump72 · 16/02/2021 17:29

i got 68 ..will wait and see where it puts me I am 49 so will have to wait and see I guess

Trumplosttheelection · 16/02/2021 17:30

Ah I'm self inflicted fat. Must take myself off to the dying holes and get out of the way of the deserving sick.
Of course I've worked on an acute hospital site throughout the pandemic, maybe that will buy me a right to a bit more life. As well as increasing my risk of covid infection significantly Hmm

barnhen · 16/02/2021 17:31

If I say I have asthma, my score goes down... interesting!

(I tried with and without as my GP thought I might be asthmatic, but never concluded. I was surprised it might bring my score down!)

In positive news, my score has dropped by 2 points thanks to the weight I've lost since last March. It's not a lot, but I'm happy with any movement there. :)

Tomhardyshadabath · 16/02/2021 17:32

My score was 46
Age: 47
BMI: 24.9
Asthma
RA
On immunosuppressants
Not had to shield to date, RA and asthma well managed so really hope I don't have to now.

kowari · 16/02/2021 17:37

@TheChip

My weight is too low to even allow me to continue 😂

I was specifically checking because I have noticed that those underweight have been dismissed throughout all of this, despite health issues and complications being similar to those overweight.

I guess they're going to continue being dismissed then since I can't even be calculated lol

My weight was last recorded at BMI 16, I'd have to update that if I was contacted as it's now 18.5, but I agree it is worrying that the underweight are being ignored.
stayingaliveisawayoflife · 16/02/2021 17:39

Actually I am even worse than some of you because I used NHS money for my surgery which was nearly 10 years ago. The fact that I have not been to the docs since then except for my bunion surgery (oh no that's more money!) I do go every three months for an injection. I run and walk and raised nearly 3,000 for UNICEF on my half marathon, I have taught through all of this and will continue if I am told to shield.

Still I will go and shove my self on the self inflicted fatties naughty step until it is time for my daily walk/run. Nice to know that however hard I try to keep myself as fit and healthy as I can that blasted BMI will always label me as fat and lazy and undeserving of a chance to save my life. Oh well.

Trumplosttheelection · 16/02/2021 17:40

Worth remembering nobody has to shield. You can and should make your own risk assessment taking in to account mental health factors as well.

CurlyReds · 16/02/2021 17:40

Or do you think the fatties should just be left to die because they're not worthy?
I don’t find it reasonable that people with autoimmune disease and other genuine conditions such as asthma, are prioritised below people who just ate too much food. It also seems silly that people who’ve broken a wrist or hip are prioritised because they might develop osteoporosis, but people who already have osteoporosis aren’t prioritised.

LaLoose · 16/02/2021 17:40

Hmmm... I've been wondering for a week or so now if it had occurred to. the government to protect more parents of schoolchildren. Could this be a way to get more of them jabbed before 8 March?

rwalker · 16/02/2021 17:40

It will make they easier to target to vaccinate

ClarasZoo · 16/02/2021 17:43

Looking at the Qcovid site and playing around with weight versus postcode. You can be quite a fatty in a non deprived area, which I describe myself as. That scored the same as a BM I 25 in Liverpool... so I am guessing this new shielding list is for the more deprived postcodes and I hope they get vaccinated soon.

oil0W0lio · 16/02/2021 17:44

Nothing gets in the way of the money machine
WORD!
and let's not forget that the money machine is their highest priority in all this

TheChippendenSpook · 16/02/2021 17:45

I've received an email today advising me to continue shielding until the end of March and they will email me again before that.
