Welcome to the new thread! I will copy over links from the previous thread soon.

Please note, this is a thread to share good news and for wobblers to be reassured. Doomploppers will be met with scorn and derision!

Exactly Halle

The plan is overall very cautious

There’s a focus on here re schools not opening from some but in the overall plan it is still cautious and good to prioritise it

@SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun 29th March for organised adult sport - dare I dream of parkrun on Easter Saturday?

Oh god I hope so. Although it might depend on the viewpoint. I saw something about (cant remember where) sporting events in june, but is parkrun an event or organised sport or by events are they talking about fans in football stadiums and horse racing etc? I really hope it's back in April.

FuzzyPuffling · 22/02/2021 08:03

Yes, shielding was extended again til March 31st.

FourTeaFallOut · 22/02/2021 08:19

Yeah, 31st March letter knocked the wind out of my sails last week.

On a positive note this: BBC News - Covid-19: Boris Johnson to unveil 'cautious' plan to lift England's lockdown
www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-56148160

Suggests that they are going to look at hospitalizations and deaths rather than case numbers for easing. Which makes sense in terms of protecting the NHS. It's reassuring as these are failing even faster than case numbers.

I’m so pleased about schools for my DC - they only started at their current schools end of September (we’d been overseas for 7.5 years previous) and have made some lovely friends but were only just settled and then home schooling! Especially for my eldest who is nearly 13, he’s desperate to be at school and not home with his mum and little brother!

I am a bit sad at the no Easter holidays away - my parents live 3 hours away so I’d booked a cottage nearby hoping we’d be able to see them outside. DH is still working overseas so it’s been a hard slog without him and I wanted my mum! I do have a bubble with my sister but I don’t get any help or support from her, she lost her husband 18 months ago and is not in a great place at all so it’s quite draining. Obviously I’m glad I can be here for her and I hope it’s helping but it’s not been easy trying to balance everything and everyone........

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 22/02/2021 08:38

That’s a relief Starfish.

My folks are 2 hours away and by Easter would probably have had both vaccine doses (they had their first a few weeks ago). So it's really hard in my head to justify not being able to spend time indoors with them at that point. They won't get ill (as well as being vaccinated they have both had it already and were barely affected), we are all low risk, and they are unlikely to transmit anything to us anyway.

We'll follow the rules as they are made at population, not individual, level but it does seem rather illogical.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 22/02/2021 08:51

Similar, ChineseChicken.
We were hoping to do what we did last summer and go down to see mil (Dorset) and my parents (Essex) while staying in a local Premier Inn and meeting outside. But it is looking like even that might not be allowed. I can’t even.

Sorry, not very good newsy! At least if ds2 (y6) can go back to school it will really really help. He is so sad and lonely.

WannaCapybara · 22/02/2021 08:57

I think people are scared to hope that this is the beginning of the end, that's all.

FourTeaFallOut · 22/02/2021 09:19

We're perilously close to needing a new thread...

Inastatus · 22/02/2021 09:20

I’m pleased about schools but I daren’t look at the other threads as I know they’ll be doom plopping all over that bit of news and I’m feeling too fragile to cope with that today. Fingers crossed for good spring weather so we can all make the most of meeting up outdoors etc.

EekThreek · 22/02/2021 09:26

@TheChineseChicken we made the decision a couple of weeks ago to postpone our may half term holiday (again) to 2022 - although ours was meant to be in France, and I can't see that happening any time soon. We might go camping (in the garden if we have to Grin ) instead.

I'm so disheartened by all the "4th lockdown"ers - all the metrics dropped in the November lockdown with schools open, so why do people think it's going to be different now? The media must have done a pretty good number to get so many people adamant that schools are the problem.

As for today's announcement, I'll be happy even if only KS1 can return, like other areas. DD1 (y6) is desperate to get back, but she will manage alright for a few more weeks if all my attention isn't soaked up by DS (y1) who cannot work without supervision.

I'm feeling more optimistic than I have for a while thanks to this thread. Even though we don't know exactly when normality will return, at least we know that every day we're one day closer to it!

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 22/02/2021 09:27

I hate the way the doom goes in both directions: ‘nothing will ever open up’ and ‘if schools open we are all doooomed’. Avoiding being sucked in feels like being on a tightrope that keeps swinging from side to side.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 22/02/2021 09:33

Vaccines having big impact on hospitalisation risk

These are Scotland figures, England expected to follow later.
Did I misread or are the figures better for AZ than Pfizer? Shock

JemimaPyjamas · 22/02/2021 09:37

Good lord, this is the only sane place on MN today!

Ours is France, too! Bloody French Grin

Inastatus · 22/02/2021 09:42

@TheCountessofFitzdotterel - yes, that article definitely reports a slightly better outcome for the AZ vaccine although both looking really good 😊

TheChineseChicken · 22/02/2021 09:42

I actually don't know anyone in real life who is opposed to schools going back (caveat: I don't really have any teacher friends, just parents)

TheKeatingFive · 22/02/2021 09:43

It’s interesting that people are surprised. AZ results for preventing hospitalisation were always very strong.

@tootyfruitypickle

Great news about schools. DD is going to be over the moon!

I'm officially switching my bubble for the rest of lockdown to see my parents now they've been jabbed, it makes much more sense to see them before schools go back anyway, then again second week easter hols. I'll wait to see my former bubble until 29 March. I think that's fair and careful which it's what it's all about.

Yes I’m going to make a childcare bubble with my parents in time for Easter school holidays I think as there will be days when I need to go into the office and will have no other childcare. They have both been jabbed.
