Irritating Covid Phrases

Now we’re about a year into the pandemic, we’re in a good position to assess what new phrases and words are the most irritating.

I’ll start with the obvious ones - “Covidiot” and “New Normal”. However, I also hate the “Stay safe” at the end of emails (suspect that’s just me).

I HATE 'rona (shudder.) Also hate when discussing plans 'covid dependent' or 'depending where we are with covid' YES obviously if another lockdown is announced we won't be meeting for cocktails/going away for the weekend.
Love some of the ones here.

whatsthatnow74 · 14/02/2021 17:49

@Coasterfan

Bubble, bubbled, bubbling up any variations of that. I despise it!!
Agreed!
Ridcully82 · 14/02/2021 17:54

"you do you,and let them do them do them", slightly overlooking how bloody communities work

GoldenOmber · 14/02/2021 17:56

People don't break rules or ignore guidance, they 'flout lockdown'. Often by 'flocking to beauty spots'.

Anything to do with returning children to school is 'throwing them back'/'shoving them back'

Every single group in the country has been 'thrown under the bus'.

profpoopsnagle · 14/02/2021 17:59

Sanitise your hands.

Washing was/is a perfectly adequate verb, and action.

everythingthelighttouches · 14/02/2021 18:18

Ooh ooh, I got another one

“Out of an abundance of caution”

5128gap · 14/02/2021 18:40

The rules
Restrictions
Tiers
The vulnerable
Excercise walk
Non essential shopping
Self isolating

And absolutely everywhere is 'rammed'.

My town is rammed. The supermarket is rammed. The streets are rammed. The park is rammed.

Of course, the tut-tutting posters must have been in the park - or wherever - themselves in order to witness all that 'ramming'. Of course, THEIR journeys were essential.

Senso21 · 14/02/2021 19:36

EXPONENTIALLY- drives me insane. Never even knew it was a word before all this and still don’t know what it actually means Grin

GoldenOmber · 14/02/2021 19:46

They’ll be the same people who just popped to the supermarket to pick up a few extra bits and bobs and were HORRIFIED to see it full of so many stupid selfish panic buyers!

GetOffYourHighHorse · 14/02/2021 20:11

'It's gone on too long. I'll do wtf I like!'

'My ndn's brother's auntie is 120 years old and in ICU where they're all that old'

'We're sacrificing the young to save ancient people who are gonna die anyway!'

'It's only the old people and the disabled who die'

'Don't mention overweight people are at much higher risk as that’s not fair and it's FAT SHAMING!!'

'I want a HUG my 'mh' is far more important than a boring public health crisis '

'The NHS is always busy in winter'

'Can I bubble with my ndn, my nan, the postman and the cleaner I can't quite understand the very simple rules'

MolyHolyGuacamole · 14/02/2021 20:27

My mum's a teacher and asks me to proofread her emails to parents (whole school has been online throughout). Every time she throws in a 'As we continue to steer through these difficult times' and every time I tell her take it out, it's so patronising and annoying. But she sneaks them back into the next one 🤢

peak2021 · 14/02/2021 20:29

Words that come out of the mouth of Boris Johnson. As the default position is that he is lying.

BonnieDundee · 14/02/2021 20:42

I hate that we throw the word "lockdown" around so casually. 11 months ago it was suggested by a friend that there were.rumours that we were going into "lockdown" and we were all aghast, I didn't really know what "lockdown" would involve. Now here we are, so blasè about "lockdown"

redcarbluecar · 14/02/2021 20:49

Hate the phrase social distancing. Why not just distancing? Particularly annoying when unnecessarily added to a FB status in parenthesis. I went for a (socially distanced) walk with my friend.

Then anything with the word ‘heroes’ in it.

stilllovingmysleep · 14/02/2021 20:59

@stampsurprise

“These strange times”
@stampsurprise Smile

Yes you're right that's a particularly irritating one. Usually at start of emails: "dear so and so, I hope you're well during these strange times"

KinderWild · 14/02/2021 21:00

Social distancing (should be physical distancing but even that's a bit annoying).

I don't hate the term common sense, but I did get fed up of it being over used, and again talked about like it was an agreed concrete thing.

Covid secure - what does it actually mean?

And yes following 'the science' as though it's a tangible fixed concrete thing. I always get an image of a bunch of scientists being chased by politicians....

New normal Angry

MolyHolyGuacamole · 14/02/2021 21:16

'Next slide please'

BonnieDundee · 14/02/2021 21:20

Alas Grin

stilllovingmysleep · 14/02/2021 21:28

"We just have to live with it"
"Let's go for a walk. Socially distanced of course"
"I'm seeing a friend who I'm bubbling with" OR "we have a good bubble going on" OR "bubbling up"
"Life is full of risk"
"For how long will we hide from it"?
"I'm putting on my ffp2 and coming to see you"
"The new normal"
"Eat out to help out"
"Travel corridors"

Deliaskis · 14/02/2021 21:32

Also 'poorly-ventilated' used to describe every single classroom in the country when many many primary schools from the 60s onwards were built on one level with doors to outside for every classroom. I'm not saying there are no poorly-ventilated classrooms, but it's thrown around as if a factual description for all schools when it isn't.

whenwillthemadnessend · 14/02/2021 21:35

Definitely
In these unprecedented times 😡😡😡😡
Usually used by businesses for providing a shit service

And every advert that has a zoom call or similar aghhhhhh

AnxiousAlpaca · 14/02/2021 21:36

'Next slide please'
Grin I’ve started doing this at work when I’m presenting. No one seems to find it funny but me though
GoldenPenPot · 14/02/2021 21:44

I find humanising the virus irritating:

“This evil virus”
“This wicked virus”
“This cruel virus”

And even worse “the deadly virus”. Technically correct but it’s not the bubonic plague. Chicken pox kills people, is that now “the deadly chicken pox”?

OP posts:
sunflowertulip · 14/02/2021 21:46

Everyone/organisation etc being 'on their knees', totally overused and become meaningless.
