Irritating Covid Phrases

Now we’re about a year into the pandemic, we’re in a good position to assess what new phrases and words are the most irritating.

I’ll start with the obvious ones - “Covidiot” and “New Normal”. However, I also hate the “Stay safe” at the end of emails (suspect that’s just me).

OP posts:

‘Unprecedented’

‘Long covid’ - it’s post viral fatigue, I don’t know why the covid version is special

Sandsnake · 14/02/2021 13:00

The word ‘safe’, used in the context of the virus. It’s used in such a pointless way to portray a non-existent binary of ‘safe’ or ‘unsafe’. ‘Supermarkets are safe’, ‘schools are safe’ etc. What does that actually mean?! Safe to me means there would be no chance of getting the virus. So no, things aren’t ‘safe’. However, they may well still be the sensible thing to do given an appropriate cost benefit analysis and employing reasonable risk mitigation.

Reallybadidea · 14/02/2021 13:08

Learn to live with it
Bubbles - all of them, particularly when they involve bursting
Lockdown when used as a verb
Frontline/front line/keyworker/ key worker
Full PPE
And not a phrase, but people who post pictures of themselves in ffp3 masks on social media so that everyone knows that they're on the 'frontline'. In my experience, there's usually an inverse correlation between time spent wearing these and number of pictures.

DuchessofHastings1 · 14/02/2021 13:09

Covidiot
Covid denier
'Stay safe' -while chatting crap about their life to me in a supermarket, one of the most highly likely places for it to spread
' Save the NHS' is always met with 'when did it become my job?'

I hate everything about anything to do with fucking Covid.

DuchessofHastings1 · 14/02/2021 13:10

Forgot 'new normal'
'Learning to live with it' though were not living with it, were hiding from it.

user1493494961 · 14/02/2021 13:14

My DH calls it 'corvid', I have told him that's the crow family but he still persists.

GintyMcGinty · 14/02/2021 13:14

All of them but 'new normal' grates the most

IcedPurple · 14/02/2021 13:17

stay safe

mask compliant

the virus doesn't care about your holiday/your daughter's birthday/Christmas

selfish flouters

the new normal

raviolidreaming · 14/02/2021 13:19

‘Long covid’ - it’s post viral fatigue, I don’t know why the covid version is special

^ this is my biggest one, along with repeated phrases people clearly think make them sound wise and superior:

  • kicking cans up the road
  • Vaccines not being a silver bullet
  • misinformation about vaccines
IcedPurple · 14/02/2021 13:19

Stay the fuck at home.

Even worse is for me has to be 'stay the fuck home'.

I hate gratuitious Americanisms at the best of times, and this is not the best of times.

Lubiluxe · 14/02/2021 13:19

'When this is all over'

DiamondBright · 14/02/2021 13:20

I hate people announcing that they, or their family member has "worked throughout the pandemic" like it's unusual and they need a medal for just doing their job.

LucilleTheVampireBat · 14/02/2021 13:21

'Save the NHS' is always met with 'when did it become my job?'

Ooh I'm guilty of that one. I'll try and stop!

AnxiousAlpaca · 14/02/2021 13:22

No words but I hate that fucking guilt shaming advert about “looking them in the eyes” how the government have the gall to run with that is beyond me.

DiamondBright · 14/02/2021 13:23

@CeeCeeEnnEss

‘Unprecedented’

‘Long covid’ - it’s post viral fatigue, I don’t know why the covid version is special

I've corrected everyone who's suggested I've had long covid, I had (still not 100% many months later) post viral fatigue as confirmed by my GP.
PracticingPerson · 14/02/2021 13:24

‘Long covid’ - it’s post viral fatigue, I don’t know why the covid version is special

This is factually incorrect, the reason the medics have termed it long vivid is because it is completely different from stand post viral fatigue. Unfortunately the covid version is special.

PracticingPerson · 14/02/2021 13:25

Typo: vivid = covid

Avaganda · 14/02/2021 13:28

Stay safe. Nothing is safe!

RigaBalsam · 14/02/2021 13:28

Learn to live with the virus. Awful

Agree jabs in arms. Imagine if it was a bum one.

Who says Coh vid and who says Cov id?

Most I know say Coh vid.

wasthataburp · 14/02/2021 13:29

Socially distanced walk/coffee etc.

PhilCornwall1 · 14/02/2021 13:30

Key worker and frontline are two of the most overused and pointless phrases to come out of this whole effort.

3littlewords · 14/02/2021 13:31

Selfish- the most used word in the past 12 months (on here anyway)

Reallybadidea · 14/02/2021 13:32

Who says Coh vid and who says Cov id?

The people who say 'cov id' are the same ones who say 'veerologist' IME

raviolidreaming · 14/02/2021 13:32

Socially distanced walk/coffee etc

You just know that when someone adds 'socially distanced of course' that whatever they did was undoubtedly not socially distanced!

MammaMiaWallace · 14/02/2021 13:34

Stay the f at home
Wear a f’ing mask
Covid wardens Confused
And the rest
