Irritating Covid Phrases

GoldenPenPot · 14/02/2021 12:21

Now we’re about a year into the pandemic, we’re in a good position to assess what new phrases and words are the most irritating.

I’ll start with the obvious ones - “Covidiot” and “New Normal”. However, I also hate the “Stay safe” at the end of emails (suspect that’s just me).

OP posts:
unmumsymummy21 · 15/02/2021 13:42

@Pinkmarsh yes this one. ' just going on a socially distanced walk '. I want to stab my eyes out when I hear that. Or generally, I love how we've all become fucking expert virologists and doctors during this crisis. Myself included of course .Oh, crisis is another one !

Second wave
Third wave
New normal
Unprecedented times

IceIceCoffee · 15/02/2021 14:01

Covidiot
We are in a PANDEMIC!
It’s not hard just stay home
New normal

copernicium · 15/02/2021 14:14

"Look them in the eyes..."

"Stay safe" at the end of professional emails

References to it being more uncomfortable in ICU with an oxygen mask, if you complain about anything

"People are DYING..."

copernicium · 15/02/2021 14:16

Oh and justification of any type of social contact as "in my bubble" (regardless of how many bubbles you may have 😂). You can't just say you smiled at someone without saying they're in your bubble.

Shodan · 15/02/2021 15:09

People don't break rules or ignore guidance, they 'flout lockdown'. If you're lucky. Sometimes they 'flaunt' lockdown. ("Hey look at my lockdown.Grin.)

Only seen/heard of on MN (thankfully) - "You'd never have managed in WWII" or similar.

It's always WWII for some reason. Never WWI, or any other war. Only WWII.

HesterShaw1 · 15/02/2021 15:17

Oh and the verb "to go" is largely redundant. Oh no, it's all about "flocking" to places now Hmm

XenoBitch · 15/02/2021 23:52

@BrienneIsMyHero

'xxx of people jabbed today!!' Really pisses me off ! Just say vaccinated...
I hate "jabbed" too... is the word a lot of people who have been restrained and injected against their will under the Mental Health act use.
dottiedaisee · 16/02/2021 00:02

@Pinkmarsh

I laugh at posts on Facebook when they’re talking about a family walk and they feel the need to point out that they “socially distanced” and stayed local or “permitted walk”..

I never want to hear the words socially distanced again after this!

Also “I’m a front line worker ”. From the receptionist at the doctors surgery 🙄

I think that people are sadly pressured into explaining themselves and their motives!

Katya213 · 16/02/2021 00:39

PLUNGED!!!
As in plunged into tier 2,3,4 etc. Drives me mad!

RuledbyASD · 16/02/2021 00:49

"We're all in this together" - No we bloody ain't! We're all in this apart from each other!!

It also seems to have become a bit of a 'tag line' for brands/companies to add at the end of every advert in order to sound relevant. Confused

"CO-OP, we're all in this together" Oooh I must shop at the co-op now, because they said the buzz word!! Hmm

sleepwouldbenice · 16/02/2021 01:00

Rulez or roooles

Or whatever sarcastic phrase people who just can’t be bothered doing as they are asked, call the rules

Lockdown lovers
Phrase used by same people.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 16/02/2021 08:40

'Dementors'

Only on mn thank god.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 16/02/2021 10:23

"Non-essential".

Yes, thanks for labelling my entire life and existence as meaningless and a fatal risk to the entire world.... (bitter independent retailer here).

God yes, "roolz" is cringe-making
HesterShaw1 · 17/02/2021 20:55

Ah no I hear plenty of people use it in real life with reference to joy sapping miserable bastards.

Granted they have to have read or seen Harry Potter.

inlimboland · 17/02/2021 21:30

-Government sanctioned walk / state mandated walk or any variation
-Anything to do with bubbles or using bubble as a verb
-Key workers... fine last March but the term has become more and more diluted

Annamaywong25 · 17/02/2021 21:39

@AnxiousAlpaca

No words but I hate that fucking guilt shaming advert about “looking them in the eyes” how the government have the gall to run with that is beyond me.
Yep.....I always turn the tv over the moment this comes on as I can't stand it!
HesterShaw1 · 17/02/2021 22:27

That advert is a disgrace.

And I believe it is having the opposite effect to intended.

raviolidreaming · 02/03/2021 09:49

I've reignited this thread because I have reached breaking point with:

Sleeves rolled up / rolled up sleeves / people entering vaccine centres rolling up their sleeves / rolling your sleeve up to take someone else for their vaccine to signify your intent at getting a leftover vaccine / sleeves being rolled up at the mention of a vaccine.

ENOUGH!!! JUST WEAR A VEST AND SHUT UP!!

Thank you. I feel better now Grin

DdraigGoch · 02/03/2021 09:54

"Respect social distancing". It's such a nonsense phrase.

unmummsymummy21 · 02/03/2021 09:58

Cohort !!!!

CC1991 · 02/03/2021 12:41

"With all this time on our hands we've been unleashing our inner baker" etc. Plenty of us have been working as normal instead of spending our days baking!

minchinfin · 02/03/2021 12:56

We have covid bingo at work:

unprecedented
global pandemic
covidiot
community transmission
hub
strange times
unprecedented times
lockdown

Puddymuddle · 02/03/2021 13:01

Every time I hear the word “safe” it annoys me ever so slightly more than the time before.
