Irritating Covid Phrases

Now we’re about a year into the pandemic, we’re in a good position to assess what new phrases and words are the most irritating.

I’ll start with the obvious ones - “Covidiot” and “New Normal”. However, I also hate the “Stay safe” at the end of emails (suspect that’s just me).

The phrase "social distancing". It's not social distancing, its physical distancing.

And especially when people use it as a verb I.e. "we were social distancing", "nobody was social distancing!"

morninglive · 14/02/2021 16:32

My bloody dad insists on calling it THE CORVID

A fucking crow is a corvid

Yes that drives me absolutely round the bend too! People are always coming out of Sainsburys shaking and crying because nobody was social distancing and they didn't feel safe 🤬🤬

Don’t kill granny
Don’t hug granny

user1471443411 · 14/02/2021 16:35

Yes and when people have to add 'socially distanced of course' after everything in case you think they are a covidiot.

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 14/02/2021 16:37

@Iootraw1

"Don’t kill granny
Don’t hug granny"

Aggravated (or passive aggressive), ageists and sexist bingo!

LAlady · 14/02/2021 16:39

Stay safe.

Makes me cringe

Chanandlerbong01 · 14/02/2021 16:40

@dividedwefall @LucilleTheVampireBat

The burglary comment was something I saw on a news article! I can’t believe the journalists didn’t at any point think.... well actually it’s not just bad because they are a key worker.

luckylavender · 14/02/2021 16:40

Bubbling
World beating

raviolidreaming · 14/02/2021 16:41

How could I forget: All in this Together. Particularly when said by someone with a huge house, lawned garden with play equipment for the kids, two parents both with secure jobs, and a grandparent childcare bubble.

SomewhereUpMyArse · 14/02/2021 16:41

Critical key workers should be more qualified specialists medic professionals saving lives in ICUs and not so much self declared sandwich artisans or barista etc in commonplace high street outlets.

Yeah can't have the plebs getting ideas above their station. They might think they matter or something.

"She calls herself a keyworker just because she has to undertake a level of risk that I don't in order to do her job. And she doesn't even earn very much money or have a nice house! The cheek of it!"

HadEnoughOfBears · 14/02/2021 16:43

"when it is deemed safe to do so"

It makes me rage. I can't even express why 🙈

LucilleTheVampireBat · 14/02/2021 16:45

If you don't laugh you'll cry!

Our local paper ran a story last year about a Chinese takeaway in town that weren't offering "keyworker discount". People absolutely piled on and the takeaway gave in and said they'd do 10% off, that wasn't good enough, people wanted 20%! They ended up going bust just after Xmas Shock

Katie517 · 14/02/2021 16:48

When people feel the need to tell you whatever they did was “socially distanced of cause” I went for a walk with a friend today socially distanced of cause! I don’t give a shit that you went for a walk let alone that it was socially distanced.

Stay safe makes me skin crawl as does stay home

People seeking approval for anything they do. “‘My roofs fell in on my house and waters flooding in is it ok for me to go and stay with my mum or should I just accept getting soaked until we can get it fixed as I know it’s against the rules?” “Ive got a dentist appointment is it safe to go”

SomewhereUpMyArse · 14/02/2021 16:48

Strange. Most places don't do "keyworker" discounts. NHS yes and, but that was already in place via blue badge scheme. Keyworkers in general don't get discounts at all.

LucilleTheVampireBat · 14/02/2021 16:50

Lots of the local takeaways advertised NHS discounts and were torn apart by people who said why shouldn't they get discount too because they were a Frontline Keyworker. A small business can be ruined by negativity on social media and most places gave in and changed it from NHS to keyworker discount.

AnxiousAlpaca · 14/02/2021 16:52

I have thought of a phrase that gives me the rage and it’s, “Not in the spirit of the guidance” Angry

SomewhereUpMyArse · 14/02/2021 16:53

Wow. Not happened here. Shame, I could have done with cheap takeaway. Oh well.

How did they check who qualified, out of interest? I mean, NI details, employment contracts or what was it?

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 14/02/2021 16:55

"Exempt"

Surely the classic being self diagnosed self declared criminal loophole "exempt!"

Exempt from what part from a criminal record and monetary fine!?

NOT scientific exempt from being a potential Covid vector and mutating super spreading?

World beating lying abuse own goal to justify some of the world beating excess per capita fatalities and new localised variants.

LucilleTheVampireBat · 14/02/2021 16:56

No idea 🤷‍♀️ Asking for some form of photo I.D or something, I assume.

SomewhereUpMyArse · 14/02/2021 17:01

Seems strange given the remote nature of transactions now and open to abuse also. You must have very trusting takeaways where you are! I can just see my local chippy giving me a discount for being in the same boat as their staff ie getting ready for work on a dark morning, hearing the previous day's death toll on the radio and wondering if today is going to be the day I catch the virus either on the bus or at work earning my £8.75 an hour.

Sounds a bit mental if you ask me.

IcedPurple · 14/02/2021 17:27

How could I forget the awful 'Covid secure'?

I heard someone saying they went out for a meal in a 'Covid secure' restaurant. Sounds utterly joyless to me. I'd rather have a takeaway.

Shadeelane · 14/02/2021 17:28

Regardless. I'll be doing x regardless. My DC will be in regardless. So fucking smug and presumptious Grin

I quite like the 'rona and covidiot though but agree with most of the others especially keyworker. Even more so when it's put in brackets. Hmm Oh and "what part of stay home don't you understand?" Though that's more reminiscent of lockdown 1
Stupid new normal language.Angry

SomewhereUpMyArse · 14/02/2021 17:30

Well there's no such thing anyway.

I work in a "covid secure" workplace. It isn't.

Timbucktime · 14/02/2021 17:40

@ColdBrightClearMorning

Yep. It frightens me tbh how quickly and easily the general public eagerly picked up and started to use the new lingo. Social distancing, mixing, r number, all being used merrily by the average joe and Joanne as if it’s something they’ve been saying their whole life.

But yes, socialising and normal human contact being rebranded as mixing especially sickens me.
